Influence of strongly coupled, hidden scalars on Higgs signals

    Get PDF
To investigate the possible effects of a light hidden sector on Higgs boson detection, we discuss a model of scalar singlets coupled to the Standard Model. The model effectively makes the Higgs width a free parameter due to additional invisible decay modes. This width can become arbitrarily large. Theoretical and experimental bounds on model parameters are presented. It is shown, how Standard Model predictions change and that in the case of large coupling, Higgs signals will be diluted. We study, to which extent such a strongly coupled, hidden sector can be excluded by present and future Higgs search experiments.Comment: 22 pages, Latex, 12 figures embedded with epsf.sty and epsfig.sty, to appear in Z. Multiple junction biasing of superconducting tunnel junction detectors

We describe a new biasing scheme for single photon detectors based on superconducting tunnel junctions. It replaces a single detector junction with a circuit of three junctions and achieves biasing of a detector junction at subgap currents without the use of an external magnetic field. The biasing occurs through the nonlinear interaction of the three junctions, which we demonstrate through numerical simulation. This nonlinear state is numerically stable against external fluctuations and is compatible with high fidelity electrical readout of the photon-induced current. The elimination of the external magnetic field potentially increases the capability of these types of photon detectors and eases constraints involved in the fabrication of large detector arrays.Comment: 15 pages, including 3 figure

A model for the dynamics of extensible semiflexible polymers

We present a model for semiflexible polymers in Hamiltonian formulation which interpolates between a Rouse chain and worm-like chain. Both models are realized as limits for the parameters. The model parameters can also be chosen to match the experimental force-extension curve for double-stranded DNA. Near the ground state of the Hamiltonian, the eigenvalues for the longitudinal (stretching) and the transversal (bending) modes of a chain with N springs, indexed by p, scale as lambda_lp ~ (p/N)^2 and lambda_tp ~ p^2(p-1)^2/N^4 respectively for small p. We also show that the associated decay times tau_p ~ (N/p)^4 will not be observed if they exceed the orientational time scale tau_r ~ N^3 for an equally-long rigid rod, as the driven decay is then washed out by diffusive motion.Comment: 28 pages, 2 figure

Long spin relaxation times in wafer scale epitaxial graphene on SiC(0001)

We developed an easy, upscalable process to prepare lateral spin-valve devices on epitaxially grown monolayer graphene on SiC(0001) and perform nonlocal spin transport measurements. We observe the longest spin relaxation times tau_S in monolayer graphene, while the spin diffusion coefficient D_S is strongly reduced compared to typical results on exfoliated graphene. The increase of tau_S is probably related to the changed substrate, while the cause for the small value of D_S remains an open question.Comment: 16 pages, 3 figures, 1 tabl
