    We study the impact of regulations on the investment decisions of a defined benefits pension plan. We assess the influence of ex ante (preventive) and ex post (punitive) risk constraints on the gains to dynamic, as opposed to myopic, decision making. We find that preventive measures, such as Value-at-Risk constraints, tend to decrease the gains to dynamic investment. In contrast, punitive constraints, such as mandatory additional contributions from the sponsor when the plan becomes underfunded, lead to very large utility gains from solving the dynamic program. We also show that financial reporting rules have real effects on investment behavior. For example, the current requirement to discount liabilities at a rolling average of yields, as opposed to at current yields, induces grossly suboptimal investment decisions.

    Creative accounting or creative destruction? Firm-level productivity growth in Chinese manufacturing.

    We present the first comprehensive set of firm-level total factor productivity estimates for China’s manufacturing sector that spans her entry into WTO. We find that productivity growth is among the highest compared to other countries. For our preferred estimate, the weighted average annual productivity growth for incumbents is 2.7% for a gross output production function and 7.7% for a value added production function over the period 1998-2006. Of the various sensitivity checks we carry out, controlling for the increase in labor quality and labor hours, as proxied by the rising real wage, has the largest (downward) effect on the productivity estimates. We further document that new entrants are a particularly dynamic force and that firms experience large productivity declines before exiting from the sample. Overall, net entry contributes roughly half to total TFP growth. Aggregate productivity growth, however, is tempered by a much lower effect of reallocation of inputs towards higher productivity firms, compared to the U.S. benchmark.

    Charge-density-wave order parameter of the Falicov-Kimball model in infinite dimensions

    In the large-U limit, the Falicov-Kimball model maps onto an effective Ising model, with an order parameter described by a BCS-like mean-field theory in infinite dimensions. In the small-U limit, van Dongen and Vollhardt showed that the order parameter assumes a strange non-BCS-like shape with a sharp reduction near T approx T_c/2. Here we numerically investigate the crossover between these two regimes and qualitatively determine the order parameter for a variety of different values of U. We find the overall behavior of the order parameter as a function of temperature to be quite anomalous.Comment: (5 pages, 3 figures, typeset with ReVTeX4

    We construct and discuss all background charges and continuous consistent deformations of standard 2d2d gravity theories with scalar matter fields. It turns out that the background charges and those deformations which change nontrivially both the form of the action and of its gauge symmetries are closely linked and exist only if the target space has at least one special (`covariantly constant') Killing vector which must be a null vector in the case of the deformations.     Influence of Hybridization on the Properties of the Spinless Falicov-Kimball Model

    Without a hybridization between the localized f- and the conduction (c-) electron states the spinless Falicov-Kimball model (FKM) is exactly solvable in the limit of high spatial dimension, as first shown by Brandt and Mielsch. Here I show that at least for sufficiently small c-f-interaction this exact inhomogeneous ground state is also obtained in Hartree-Fock approximation. With hybridization the model is no longer exactly solvable, but the approximation yields that the inhomogeneous charge-density wave (CDW) ground state remains stable also for finite hybridization V smaller than a critical hybridization V_c, above which no inhomogeneous CDW solution but only a homogeneous solution is obtained. The spinless FKM does not allow for a ''ferroelectric'' ground state with a spontaneous polarization, i.e. there is no nonvanishing -expectation value in the limit of vanishing hybridization.Comment: 7 pages, 6 figure
