    Cavity Microwave Searches for Cosmological Axions

    This chapter will cover the search for dark matter axions based on microwave cavity experiments proposed by Pierre Sikivie. We will start with a brief overview of halo dark matter and the axion as a candidate. The principle of resonant conversion of axions in an external magnetic field will be described as well as practical considerations in optimizing the experiment as a signal-to-noise problem. A major focus of this chapter will be the two complementary strategies for ultra-low noise detection of the microwave photons--the 'photon-as-wave' approach (i.e. conventional heterojunction amplifiers and soon to be quantum-limited SQUID devices), and 'photon-as-particle' (i.e. Rydberg-atom single-quantum detection). Experimental results will be presented; these experiments have already reached well into the range of sensitivity to exclude plausible axion models, for limited ranges of mass. The section will conclude with a discussion of future plans and challenges for the microwave cavity experiment

    Beta agonists, including Optaflexx (Elanco Animal Health, Greenfield, IN), are now routinely fed to finishing cattle as a means of increasing carcass weight and efficiency of carcass weight gain during the final 20 to 42 days on feed. BoVantage, a product recently introduced by Kent Nutrition Group (Muscatine, IA) for use in feedlot cattle, has been observed to improve efficiency of gain late in the finishing phase.     Probing Axions with Radiation from Magnetic Stars

    Recent experiments suggest that polarized photons may couple significantly to pseudoscalar particles such as axions. We study the possible observational signatures of axion-photon coupling for radiation from magnetic stars, with particular focus on neutron stars. We present general methods for calculating the axion-photon conversion probability during propagation through a varying magnetized vacuum as well as across an inhomogeneous atmosphere. Partial axion-photon conversion may take place in the vacuum region outside the neutron star. Strong axion-photon mixing occurs due to a resonance in the atmosphere, and depending on the axion coupling strength and other parameters, significant axion-photon conversion can take place at the resonance. Such conversions may produce observable effects on the radiation spectra and polarization signals from the star. We also apply our results to axion-photon propagation in the Sun and in magnetic white dwarfs.     First limits on the 3-200 keV X-ray spectrum of the quiet Sun using RHESSI

    We present the first results using the Reuven Ramaty High-Energy Solar Spectroscopic Imager, RHESSI, to observe solar X-ray emission not associated with active regions, sunspots or flares (the quiet Sun). Using a newly developed chopping technique (fan-beam modulation) during seven periods of offpointing between June 2005 to October 2006, we obtained upper limits over 3-200 keV for the quietest times when the GOES12 1-8A flux fell below 10−810^{-8} Wm−2^{-2}. These values are smaller than previous limits in the 17-120 keV range and extend them to both lower and higher energies. The limit in 3-6 keV is consistent with a coronal temperature ≤6\leq 6 MK. For quiet Sun periods when the GOES12 1-8A background flux was between 10−810^{-8} Wm−2^{-2} and 10−710^{-7} Wm−2^{-2}, the RHESSI 3-6 keV flux correlates to this as a power-law, with an index of 1.08±0.131.08 \pm 0.13. The power-law correlation for microflares has a steeper index of 1.29±0.061.29 \pm 0.06. We also discuss the possibility of observing quiet Sun X-rays due to solar axions and use the RHESSI quiet Sun limits to estimate the axion-to-photon coupling constant for two different axion emission scenarios.Comment: 4 pages, 3 figures, Accepted by ApJ letter

    Zilmax (Merck Animal Health; Summit, NJ) is in a class of feed additives known as beta agonists and is designed to improve production efficiency in cattle when fed 20 days prior to harvest. Zilmax works by altering deposition of body tissue to more lean muscle than fat. Zinc is an essential mineral necessary for normal growth and development of all mammals. Zinc functions largely in enzymes involved in protein synthesis and carbohydrate metabolism along with many other biological reactions. The purpose of this study was to assess changes in blood components and to evaluate the interactive effects of zinc and Zilmax supplementation on growth and carcass characteristics of finishing steers
