The Language of Power in the Present-Day Digital Media Discourse and Its Effect on Young People’s Consciousness
This study focuses on the notion of power as a way of conceptualisation, representation and functioning in the Russian and English-speaking media discourse and its role in the life of the younger generation of the third millennium. Power and its language have always remained an actual research question of interdisciplinary scientific analysis. However, studying young people’s linguistic and paralinguistic perception of power in the era of digitalisation becomes extremely important due to an empowering role young adults have started playing in modern society employing new media and their discursive communication there. The study regards the theoretical background of the phenomenon of power, based on A. Gramsci’s hegemonic approach. The authors of the research suggest that the media discourse is a hegemonic form of power that maintains its position through the elaboration of a particular worldview, which makes a significant impact on young individuals, the so-called net-generation. The study relies on free-associative and graphic experiments to analyse and perceive “power” concept and its influence on young individuals’ consciousness. Results indicate that both Russian and English-speaking media discourse represents “power” through the prism of anthroponyms as well as toponyms. Besides, the findings of the free-associative experiment, conducted among young adults, demonstrated the dominance of the lexical units belonging to the same grammatical class of words as the stimulus word “power”. Furthermore, a graphic experiment revealed young people’s emotional evaluations of power in media discourse communication. As such, the results suggest that “power” is a natural, complex and multifaceted linguacultural and social phenomenon realised through a variety of linguistic and paralinguistic means, and it produces a dualistic effect on young people’s consciousness through their interaction in the media discourse space
быть нацеленными на будущую специальность студентов, информативными, актуальными;
иметь полемическую направленность, стимулировать дебаты и дискуссии;
Thermodynamics of the obtained ion exchanges for the sorption of various ions in environmental wastewaters
This study focuses on investigating the thermodynamic parameters of an ion exchanger synthesized using chlorinated polypropylene with polyethylene polyamines. The ion exchanger, derived from chlorinated polypropylene, demonstrates full compliance with chemical resistance standards. The research involves the examination of isotherms governing the sorption process of Cu(II) and Ni(II) ions by the ion exchanger. These isotherms adhere to the Freundlich model, offering insights into the ion-exchange behavior of the material. Additionally, the study delves into the dynamic exchange capacity and desorption characteristics of the resulting ion exchanger in a granular state. These parameters are crucial for understanding the material's performance in practical applications, shedding light on its ability to efficiently exchange and release metal ions. By comprehensively analyzing the thermodynamic aspects and sorption behavior of the synthesized ion exchanger, this work contributes valuable knowledge to the field of ion exchange materials. The findings offer a basis for further optimization and application of such materials in various industrial processes, particularly in the removal of heavy metal ions from aqueous solutions
Pharmacodynamics of the Glutamate Receptor Antagonists in the Rat Barrel Cortex
Epipial application is one of the approaches for drug delivery into the cortex. However, passive diffusion of epipially applied drugs through the cortical depth may be slow, and different drug concentrations may be achieved at different rates across the cortical depth. Here, we explored the pharmacodynamics of the inhibitory effects of epipially applied ionotropic glutamate receptor antagonists CNQX and dAPV on sensory-evoked and spontaneous activity across layers of the cortical barrel column in urethane-anesthetized rats. The inhibitory effects of CNQX and dAPV were observed at concentrations that were an order higher than in slices in vitro, and they slowly developed from the cortical surface to depth after epipial application. The level of the inhibitory effects also followed the surface-to-depth gradient, with full inhibition of sensory evoked potentials (SEPs) in the supragranular layers and L4 and only partial inhibition in L5 and L6. During epipial CNQX and dAPV application, spontaneous activity and the late component of multiple unit activity (MUA) during sensory-evoked responses were suppressed faster than the short-latency MUA component. Despite complete suppression of SEPs in L4, sensory-evoked short-latency multiunit responses in L4 persisted, and they were suppressed by further addition of lidocaine suggesting that spikes in thalamocortical axons contribute ∼20% to early multiunit responses. Epipial CNQX and dAPV also completely suppressed sensory-evoked very fast (∼500 Hz) oscillations and spontaneous slow wave activity in L2/3 and L4. However, delta oscillations persisted in L5/6. Thus, CNQX and dAPV exert inhibitory actions on cortical activity during epipial application at much higher concentrations than in vitro, and the pharmacodynamics of their inhibitory effects is characterized by the surface-to-depth gradients in the rate of development and the level of inhibition of sensory-evoked and spontaneous cortical activity

Author’s prospect and plot perspective in the closed-in construction of an oratorical speech
The article deals with the problem of creating a public oratorical speech. This research is based on an extensive literary analysis of such scientists in the field of text as I.G. Koshevaya (Koshevaya, 2012), L L. Nelyubin (Nelyubin, 2011), L.K. Sviridova (Sviridova, 2004), G.T. Khukhuni (Khukhuni, 2011). The purpose of the research is to analyze the relationship between the author’s prospect and the plot perspective of the oratorical text. During the research, we used the following methods: the method of contextual analysis, the method of dictionary definitions, the descriptive method, and the method of continuous sampling when selecting material for research. We have selected, counted, and systematized speeches from more than 1000 pages of texts of public speeches. The results of the research can be used in writing academic and political oratorical texts, as well as in courses of rhetoric for University students
“Green neology” and its role in environmental education (a media discourse approach)
The article covers the problem of ecological neologisms which mostly appear in the present-day media discourse space and actively function there by making a significant impact on people’s environmental worldview. Moreover, the research also raises the problem of neologisms as an effective educational instrument for raising human ecological awareness. A comparative analysis of the most popular neologisms circulated in the Russian, British and American media discourse space is introduced in the study. Finally, it is suggested that green neology in its close correlation with media ecology provide a foundation for building and developing a new ecosystemic society with more sustainable ideology towards the future of the planet
Academic writing MOOCs – a blended learning approach
The paper discusses a blended learning approach to teaching academic writing using an externally created MOOC fully incorporated into the existing pedagogic design. The authors intend to demonstrate potentials and limitations of mixed model learning in the ESP classroom. To this day there has been little research of repurposing MOOCs for language classes, as they are usually more practical and interactive. However, the authors believe that the online component of the blended course creates an additional dimension for language acquisition and allows to address numerous general issues on academic writing which are not traditionally discussed in ESP/EAP classes. Based on the results of the case study conducted at RUDN university, the study outlines numerous benefits of blended learning trajectory. However, the investigation revealed a few challenges, some of which can be easily remedied, whereas others are of more problematic nature
