Mineração, movimentos sociais e a expansão da China na América Latina

En este artículo, se analiza la relación entre las compañías mineras chinas en América Latina y la presencia de movimientos sociales antisistémicos desde la teoría del sistema mundo moderno. Se hace énfasis en las actividades de minería y se ofrece una descripción histórica de las prácticas generales de las empresas chinas, conforme a la reformulación paulatina de los intereses de su país. Utilizando el análisis de la base de datos de conflictos mineros del ocmal, se identifican aquellos en los que intervienen empresas de propiedad china, para así describir el impacto social y ambiental que generan, y el surgimiento de movimientos sociales como respuesta a sus prácticas extractivas. Se comparan las prácticas de empresas de otros países en la región, conforme a una muestra aleatoria. Los resultados muestran procedimientos similares de las empresas mineras en América Latina, independientemente de su origen nacional. Se concluye que el reto es construir una propuesta alternativa al actual sistema mundo moderno para pasar de una visión local a una mundial en la que se armonicen las diversas tensiones dentro de estos movimientos.In this article, we analyze the relationship between Chinese mining companies and anti-systemic movements in Latin America, based upon the modern world system theory. We focus on mining activities and offer a historical overview of Chinese companies' general practices and how they change according to the reformulation of China's national interests. Using the ocmal's mining conflict database, we identified those conflicts in which Chine intervened describing their social and environmental impact, as well as the anti-systemic movements that may arise as a response to the extractive practices. We compared these practices with those of companies from different countries, of a random sample. The results show similar procedures for most mining companies in Latin America regardless of their national origin. We conclude the challenge lying ahead is to build an alternative proposal for the modern world system that moves from a local to a global vision, thus reconciling all internal tensions

The world production and trade of rare earth elements: the position of the pacific area

In this paper we analyze the characteristics of the so-called rare earth elements (REEs) and its industrial applications. We present the policy, or lack thereof, in the countries in the Pacific Rim for its mining and commerce, and the current and future weight that rare earth minerals will have in international trade. The technological revolution experienced over the last 25 years, has brought the REEs to the public’s attention for being instrumental in obtaining catalysts, lasers and optical fiber, luminescent substances and LEDs, superconductors, permanent magnets, batteries and ultra-capacitors. China’s leading position as the supplier of these minerals worldwide, and its recent export restriction policy for domestic industrial activities have driven up international prices. Price increase for REEs is leading to the need for both recycling and its replacement. It has also led other countries in the Asia Pacific Rim to prospect new potential sites on their own territories, or even to restart operations in deposits that had been previously abandoned. Those strategies will likely gain greater importance as environmental pollution problems associated with the exploitation, processing, and recovery of REEs increase

Exploring the consumer habits of the Carrefour buyers in Hangzhou, China

This study examines the consumer behavior in the Carrefour Supercenter of Hangzhou, China, in the attempt of finding results that will display the shopping patterns of an evolving clientele. The city of Hangzhou is one of the cities with the highest per capita income, and because of its proximity to Shanghai it has been used as a test city before introducing products to mayor markets. Using observation as the main tool for such an analysis, the research considered a sample of consumers seeking to detect their shopping patterns, furthermor, a number of interviews generating useful information for strategic decisions was performed. The results show information about attitude towards promotional stands, the demographic characteristics of the consumer and the way of choosing products, among other variables. Additionally, it is verified that the Chinese culture impacts every aspect of the average People´s Republic of China (PRC) consumer
