    COMPARATIVE PHARMACOGNOSTICAL AND PHYTOCHEMICAL STUDY OF VARIOUS SPECIES OF THE CONTROVERSIAL DRUG ‘PUNARNAVA'

    Objective: Punarnava is a controversial drug i.e. its true botanical identity has not been ascertained, and several different species are used as Punarnava. It is a part of many medicinally important traditional formulations. Ayurvedic Pharmacopoeia of India describes three different species–Roots of Boerhaavia diffusa, Trianthema portulacastrum and Boerhaavia verticillata. The present work deals with the microscopic, macroscopic and phytochemical comparison of the roots of these species of Punarnava, so as to differentiate them and establish their quality parameters.Methods: Roots of these three species were collected, and their comparative morphological, microscopical (transverse section, powder study) and the phytochemical (screening, tannin estimation) study was performed.Results: Roots of Boerhaavia diffusa showed morphological characteristics which clearly distinguished it from the other species. They showed the presence of well developed and stratified cork, abnormal vascular bundles which were discontinuous, and a central cavity, presumably formed due to the disintegration of tissues. Boerhaavia verticillata showed the presence of xylem bundles arranged in the form of a ‘X'-shaped cross in the central region. Thick-walled cork cells and pitted xylem vessels were present only in Boerhaavia diffusa root powder, whereas bundles of fibrovascular tissue were present only in the powder of Boerhaavia verticillata. Tannin content was found to be highest in Boerhaavia diffusa roots.Conclusion: The present investigation will help herbal industries and traditional medicinal practitioners to detect adulteration of the medicinally important immunomodulator Boerhaavia diffusa by Trianthema portulacastrum and Boerhaavia verticillata, which are considered to have no immunomodulatory activity.Â

    Exact ground states of a staggered supersymmetric model for lattice fermions

    We study a supersymmetric model for strongly interacting lattice fermions in the presence of a staggering parameter. The staggering is introduced as a tunable parameter in the manifestly supersymmetric Hamiltonian. We obtain analytic expressions for the ground states in the limit of small and large staggering for the model on the class of doubly decorated lattices. On this type of lattice there are two ground states, each with a different density. In one limit we find these ground states to be a simple Wigner crystal and a valence bond solid (VBS) state. In the other limit we find two types of quantum liquids. As a special case, we investigate the quantum liquid state on the one dimensional chain in detail.     Inverted papilloma in Russian Hamster

    Introduction: Cutaneous papilloma is a benign epithelial neoplasm arising in epidermal keratinocytes. Papillomaviruses belong to papovavirus family, causing single or multiple verrucous projections, variable in size, well circumscribed and keratinized. This type of tumour is common in horses, cattle and humans; less frequent in dogs and goats and rare in sheep, pigs, cats, guinea pigs and hamsters. Medical History: A 1-and a half year old entire Russian hamster was presented with a right lateral axilar subcutaneous ulcerated nodule. No other abnormalities were detected on clinical examination. The approach taken was total surgical excision. Material and Methods: The samples were fixed in 10 % buffered formalin solution for histological evaluation and were sent to the Anatomic Pathology Laboratory of the Agrarian Superior School of Viseu, in Portugal. Results: Macroscopically, the cut section revealed whitish tissues with radiated aspect, converging on the ulcerated area. Microscopic examination revealed a cystic cavity, lined by hiperplasic squamous epithelium, apparently inverted, with ortho and parakeratotic hyperkeratosis, presenting peniforme pattern. The epithelium showed acanthosis, hypergranulosis, with very large keratohyalin granules. Koilocytosis was also observed, as well as sparse eosinophilic intracytoplasmic bodies, in the cells with ballooning degeneration. Discussion and Conclusion: The histopathological features observed were compatible with the diagnosis of papilloma. However, the uncharacteristic inverted image of the epithelium, producing keratin convergent to the cystic cavity, which acquired a peniforme appearance, would fit the descriptions of inverted papilloma, although, apparently, this type of tumor, especially of such large dimensions, never been described in the hamster.This work was supported by Portuguese Foundation for Science and Technology, Center for Studies in Education, Technologies and by Health and by strategic project PEst-OE/CED/UI4016/201

    Tumour Necrosis Factor (TNF) has been identified in the uterus of several species, and altered TNF expression is reported in some pathological conditions.
