    On Optimal Family of Codes for Archival DNA Storage

    DNA based storage systems received attention by many researchers. This includes archival and re-writable random access DNA based storage systems. In this work, we have developed an efficient technique to encode the data into DNA sequence by using non-linear families of ternary codes. In particular, we proposes an algorithm to encode data into DNA with high information storage density and better error correction using a sub code of Golay code.     Bifunctional recombinant fusion proteins for rapid detection of antibodies to both HIV-1 and HIV-2 in whole blood

    BACKGROUND: Availability of accurate diagnostic tests has been helpful in curtailing the spread of HIV infection. Among these, simple, point of care, inexpensive tests which require only a drop of blood from finger-prick and give reliable results within minutes are a must for expansion of testing services and for reaching mobile and marginalised populations. Such tests will not only be a boon for the infrastructure-starved developing and underdeveloped countries but will also be extremely useful in developed countries where post-testing compliance is a major problem. Our laboratory has been involved in developing reagents for heamagglutination-based rapid detection of antibodies to HIV in whole blood using recombinant molecules specific for either HIV-1 or HIV-2. Since it is not required of a screening test to differentially detect HIV and HIV-2, it would useful to create a single molecule capable of simultaneous detection of both HIV-1 and HIV-2 in a drop of blood. RESULTS: The present paper describes designing, high-level expression and large-scale purification of new molecules comprising recombinant anti-RBC Fab fused to immunodominant regions of envelope sequences from both gp41 of HIV-1 and gp36 of HIV-2. These immunodominant regions of HIV envelope contain cysteine residues, which make disulfide bond and can interfere with the assembly of light chain and heavy chain fragment to make Fab molecule in vitro. To circumvent this problem, a series of fusion proteins having different combinations of native and mutant envelope sequences were constructed, purified and evaluated for their efficacy in detecting antibodies to HIV-1 and HIV-2. A chimeric molecule comprising native envelope sequence of gp41 of HIV-1 and modified envelope sequence of gp36 of HIV-2 gave good production yield and also detected both HIV-1 and HIV-2 samples with high sensitivity and specificity. CONCLUSION: The new bifunctional antibody fusion protein identified in this study detects both HIV-1 and HIV-2 infected samples efficiently and can be used in place of molecules that detect only HIV-1 or HIV-2. This will make reagent production more economical as only one molecule has to be produced in place of two molecules. Also, it will simplify the testing procedure allowing detection of both HIV-1 and HIV-2 infections in a single drop of blood

    Retirement prediction helps individuals and institutions make informed finan-cial, lifestyle, and workforce decisions based on estimated retirement portfolios. This paper attempts to predict retirement using Monte Carlo simulations, allow-ing one to probabilistically account for a range of possibilities. The authors propose a model to predict the values of the investment accounts IRA and 401(k) through the simulation of inflation rates, interest rates, and other perti-nent factors.     Analysis of Performance Indicators on Sustenance of Micro Finance Institutes: A Comparative Study of East Asian & Pacific, and South Asian Countries

    Micro Finance services have existed for the past three decades in the developing nations. It has been implemented as the complementary to the formal financial infrastructure. The major objective is to provide the financial services to the poverty section that has been denied by the commercial banks. Voluntary and NGOs plays a vital role in the implementation of the Micro finance services in developing nations. The usage of performance measurements in the voluntary and NGOs is low as supported by literature. The literature also highlights the significance of the performance indicators, for better performance of an organisation. Financial self sustenance (FSS) and Operational self sustenance (OSS) reflects the financial performance of Microfinance Institute. The present study attempts to identify the various variables and capture the significance of the influence upon the FSS and OSS of an organisation in the context of East Asia and pacific region and South Asia (regions defined by MIX Market). The increase in the outreach of in Microfinance institutes (MFIs) decreases the depth (average loan/ borrower), which is in sync with the literature. However the prior said phenomena's sensitivity is found to be lower in MFIs in the south Asian countries than the MFIs in the East Asian and pacific countries. The FSS in both the contexts has less of difference but has significant difference in terms of OSS. However, the variables those contribute to FSS and OSS value are also different with respect to the region. The results obtained in this paper identify and highlight the importance of the region specific variables that are to be improved in order to increase the sustenance of MFIs

    Menopausal symptoms in rural middle aged women: a community based cross sectional study

    Background: Menopause poses a big challenge to the healthy aging of a woman. With growing emphasis on universal health coverage and improving quality of life, it is the need of hour to address the issues population of postmenopausal women to enhance our understanding of women’s experiences during menopause.Methods: This cross-sectional study was conducted using non-probability purposive sampling and house-to-house visit in randomly selected villages falling under rural Health Block Kot-Bhalwal. 245 postmenopausal women were interviewed in accordance with pretested questionnaire consisting of Sociodemographic data and Greene Climacteric Scale.Results: Muscle and joint pains was the most common complaint (89.0%), followed by feeling tired or lacking in energy (87.4%), difficulty in sleeping (82.5%) and difficulty in concentrating (80.4%). Nearly three-fourth of the study participants reported to be suffering from Irritability (77.6%), feeling tense/nervous (77.5%), Headaches (76.7%), loss of interest in most things (75.9%), feeling unhappy or depressed (74.29%), sweating at night (73.47%), attacks of anxiety, panic (73.5%), pressure or tightness in head (72.6%), and feeling dizzy or faint (71.8%).Conclusions: A higher prevalence of menopausal symptoms was found. However, more research studies are needed to determine rural urban differences in prevalence and severity of the symptoms using a standardized tool on a larger sample in the community setting
