    Indução de estro em cabras da raça Toggenburg com dois diferentes dispositivos intravaginais.

    Doze cabras nuliparas da raça Toggenburg foram distribuidas em dois tratamentos (Tl e T2) para induçao do estro. 0 T1 (n=6) consistiu na inserçao da esponja imnpregnada com 60mg de acetato de medroxiprogesterona, associado a aplicaçao de 50mg do analogo sintetico d-cloprostenol (PGF). No quarto dia, foram aplicadas 250UI de gonadotropina corionica equina (eCG) e, no quinto, a esponja foi retirada. 0 T2 (n=6) diferiu somente quanto ao dispositivo empregado, que foi 0 CIDR-G@. Seis cabras do Tl e seis do T2 entraram em estro depois da retirada dos dispositivos, sendo que 83,3 (5/6) e 33,3% (2/6) ficaram gestantes em Tl e T2, respectivamente. 0 intervalo da retirada do dispositivo ao inicio do estro nao diferiu entre tratamentos (P>O,O5). As caracteristicas ovulatorias nao foram influenciadas pelos tratamentos. 0 intervalo da retirada do dispositivo a ovulaçao, para ambos os protocolos de induçao do estro, nao diferiu (P>O,O5) entre tratamentos. Ambos os dispositivos foram eficientes em induzir O estro. [Estrous induction in Toggenburg goats using intravaginal devices]. Abstract: Twelve Toggenburg breed nuliparous female goats were randomly assigned to two treatments intended to induce estrus. On day zero, animals on T1 (n=6) were treated with an intravaginal sponge impregnated with 60mg of medroxyprogesterone acetate plus 50µg of PGF analogue. The T1 goats received eCG (250IU) on day 4, and on day 5 the sponge was removed. The T2 goats (n=6) received CIDR-G® as intravaginal sponge plus 50mg of PGF analogue. All goats expressed behavioral estrus, and the pregnancy rates were 83.3 (5/6) and 33.3% (2/6) for T1 and T2, respectively. The interval from withdrawal of the device to onset of estrus did not differ between treatments (P>0.05). Ovulatory traits also were not affected by treatments. The interval between CIDR-G® removal and ovulation for T1 and T2 goats were similar (P>0.05). Both sponge and CIDR-G were equally efficient in inducing the estrus behavior in goats

    Somatic development and embryo yield in crossbred F1 mice generated by different mating strategies.

    The aim of this study was to evaluate different mating strategies among endogamic strains to create F1 populations of mice, minimising the effect of inbreeding depression on somatic development and embryo yield. Females from the strains Swiss, CBA and C57Bl/6 were divided in nine experimental mate arrangements. The total numbers of pups born alive per dam and somatic development, estimated by weighing and measuring the crown-rump length, were recorded. Superovulation response was evaluated in outbreed females. Litter size differed among endogamic dams, irrespective of the sire. Somatic development results suggest heterosis and imprinting phenomena, once a differential parental effect was demonstrated. There was no difference in corpora lutea, ova or embryos recovered (P > 0.05), but recovery and viability rates differ among F1 groups (P < 0.05). The association of dam prolificity with somatic development and superovulation response of the pups should be considered for experimental F1 populations establishment. The use of outbreed animals, however, did not reduce response variability to hormone treatment

    Virialization of Galaxy Clusters and Beyond

    Using samples of structures identified by a multi-scale decomposition from numerical simulation, we analyze the scale-dependence of the virialization of clusters. We find that beyond the scale of full virialization there exists a radius range over which clusters are quasi-virialized, i.e. while the internal structure of an {\it individual} cluster is at substantial departure from dynamical relaxation, some {\it statistical} properties of the multi-scale identified clusters are approximately the same as those for the virialized systems. The dynamical reason of the existence of quasi-virialization is that some of the scaling properties of dynamically relaxed systems of cosmic gravitational clustering approximately hold beyond the full virialization regime. The "individual-statistical" duality of the quasi-virialization provides an explanation of the observed puzzle that the total masses of clusters derived from virial theorem are statistically the same as the gravitational lensing determined masses, in spite of the presence of irregular configuration and substructures in individual clusters. It also explains the tight correlation between the velocity dispersion of optical galaxies and the temperature of X-ray emitting gas. Consequently, the virial mass estimators based on the assumptions of isothermal and hydrostatic model are statistically applicable to scales on which the clusters are quasi-virialized. In the quasi-virialization regime, the temperature functions of clusters also show scaling.     Observational constraints on low redshift evolution of dark energy: How consistent are different observations?

    The dark energy component of the universe is often interpreted either in terms of a cosmological constant or as a scalar field. A generic feature of the scalar field models is that the equation of state parameter w= P/rho for the dark energy need not satisfy w=-1 and, in general, it can be a function of time. Using the Markov chain Monte Carlo method we perform a critical analysis of the cosmological parameter space, allowing for a varying w. We use constraints on w(z) from the observations of high redshift supernovae (SN), the WMAP observations of CMB anisotropies and abundance of rich clusters of galaxies. For models with a constant w, the LCDM model is allowed with a probability of about 6% by the SN observations while it is allowed with a probability of 98.9% by WMAP observations. The LCDM model is allowed even within the context of models with variable w: WMAP observations allow it with a probability of 99.1% whereas SN data allows it with 23% probability. The SN data, on its own, favors phantom like equation of state (w<-1) and high values for Omega_NR. It does not distinguish between constant w (with w<-1) models and those with varying w(z) in a statistically significant manner. The SN data allows a very wide range for variation of dark energy density, e.g., a variation by factor ten in the dark energy density between z=0 and z=1 is allowed at 95% confidence level. WMAP observations provide a better constraint and the corresponding allowed variation is less than a factor of three. Allowing for variation in w has an impact on the values for other cosmological parameters in that the allowed range often becomes larger.     Producing and Detecting Correlated atoms

    We discuss experiments to produce and detect atom correlations in a degenerate or nearly degenerate gas of neutral atoms. First we treat the atomic analog of the celebrated Hanbury Brown Twiss experiment, in which atom correlations result simply from interference effects without any atom interactions.We have performed this experiment for both bosons and fermions. Next we show how atom interactions produce correlated atoms using the atomic analog of spontaneous four-wavemixing. Finally, we briefly mention experiments on a one dimensional gas on an atom chip in which correlation effects due to both interference and interactions have been observed.Comment: to appear in conference proceedings "Atomic Physics 20

    Púrpura de Henoch-Schönlein Associada a Adenocarcinoma do Pulmão

    Introduction: The Henoch-Schönlein purpura (HSP) is an immunoglobulin A (IgA)-mediated smallvessel systemic vasculitis, rare in adults. The association with solid tumours has been described, especially with lung cancer. Case Report: We present the case of a 60-year-old Caucasian male, diagnosed with lung adenocarcinoma that underwent surgical resection without (neo)adjuvant theraphy. Two months latter he was admitted for abdominal pain, purpuric rash on his lower extremities and acute kidney injury, with serum creatinine (Scr) of 2 mg/dl. Urinalysis revealed haematuria and 24h proteinuria (P24h) of 1.5 g. The serum protein electrophoresis, complement components C3 and C4, circulating immune complexes, cryoglobulins, ANCA, ANA, anti-dsDNA and the remaining immunologic study as screening for viral infections (HCV, HBV and HIV) were negative. Renal ultrasound was normal and kidney biopsy revealed mild mesangial proliferation; 2 cellular glomerular crescents and 1 fibrinoid necrosis lesion; large amounts of red blood cell casts; lymphocytic infiltration in the intertubular interstitial capillaries; moderate arteriolar hyalinosis. Immunofluorescence demonstrated mesangial and parietal deposits of IgA. The diagnosis of HSP was assumed, and the patient started prednisolone 1 mg/kg/day. Ten months after diagnosis the patient’s baseline Scr is 1.4 mg/dl with P24h of 0.18g, without haematuria. Conclusion: Although this is a rare association and the exact mechanism behind the disease is yet unknown, physicians should be aware of it.
