    Post-Dieselgate : Evidence of NOx Emission Reductions Using On-Road Remote Sensing

    The Dieselgate scandal which broke in September 2015 demonstrated that vehicle manufacturers, such as the Volkswagen Group (VWG), engaged in software-based manipulation which led to vehicles passing laboratory-based emission testing limits but were far more polluting while being driven on roads. Using 23 000 on-road remote sensing measurements of light-duty Euro 5 diesel vehicles in the United Kingdom between 2012 and 2018, VWG vehicles with the "Dieselgate-affected" EA189 engine demonstrated anomalous NOx emission behavior between the pre- and post-Dieselgate periods which was not observed in other vehicle makes or models. These anomalous changes can be explained by voluntary VWG hardware and software fixes which have led to improved NOx emission control. The VGW 1.6 L vehicles, with a simple hardware fix and a software upgrade, resulted in a 36% reduction in NOx, whereas the 2.0 L vehicles that required a software-only fix showed a 30% reduction in NOx once controlled for ambient temperature effects. These results show that even minor changes or upgrades can considerably reduce NOx emissions, which has implications for future emission control activities and local air quality

    Permutations whose reverse shares the same recording tableau in the RSK correspondence

    The RSK correspondence is a bijection between permutations and pairs of standard Young tableaux with identical shape, where the tableaux are commonly denoted PP (insertion) and QQ (recording). It has been an open problem to demonstrate {wSnQ(w)=Q(wr)}={2n12(n1n12)n odd0n even, |\{w \in \mathfrak{S}_n | \, Q(w) = Q(w^r)\}| = \begin{cases} \displaystyle 2^{\frac{n-1}{2}}{n-1 \choose \frac{n-1}{2}} & n \text{ odd} \newline \displaystyle 0 & n \text{ even} \end{cases}, where wrw^r is the reverse permutation of ww. First we show that for each ww where Q(w)=Q(wr)Q(w) = Q(w^r) the recording tableau Q(w)Q(w) has a symmetric hook shape and satisfies a certain simple property.     Reflection-impulsivity in athletes: A cross-sectional and longitudinal investigation

    Reflection-impulsivity is a dimension of cognitive or decision-making style. We conducted two quasi-experimental studies to examine reflection-impulsivity in athletes using an information sampling task. In Study 1 (n = 108; Mage = 22.7 ± SDage = 1.42; 50% female), we used a cross-sectional design to compare performance across athletic expertise (super-elite, elite, amateur, novice or non-athlete) and sport type (external-paced or self-paced). In Study 2 (Time 1 n = 106; Mage = 21.32 ± SDage = 5.77; 53% female and Time 2 n = 64; Mage = 21.19 ± SDage = 5.12; 44% female), we examined changes in reflection-impulsivity across a 16-week playing season. Study 1 showed more accurate and more efficient performance as athletic expertise increased. Study 2 revealed better effectiveness and efficiency following sport participation, a 16-week playing season, most notably in elite-level performers. No sport-type differences were noted. Taken together, the studies demonstrate an association between reflection-impulsivity and athletic expertise, while also providing evidence that competitive sports participation leads to efficient decisions based on reflection, without sacrificing accuracy, which is often a consequence of impulsive decision-making

    PCAT-DE: Reconstructing point-like and diffuse signals in astronomical images using spatial and spectral information

    Observational data from astronomical imaging surveys contain information about a variety of source populations and environments, and its complexity will increase substantially as telescopes become more sensitive. Even for existing observations, measuring the correlations between point-like and diffuse emission can be crucial to correctly inferring the properties of any individual component. For this task information is typically lost, either because of conservative data cuts, aggressive filtering or incomplete treatment of contaminated data. We present the code PCAT-DE, an extension of probabilistic cataloging designed to simultaneously model point-like and diffuse signals. This work incorporates both explicit spatial templates and a set of non-parametric Fourier component templates into a forward model of astronomical images, reducing the number of processing steps applied to the observed data. Using synthetic Herschel-SPIRE multiband observations, we demonstrate that point source and diffuse emission can be reliably separated and measured. We present two applications of this model. For the first, we perform point source detection/photometry in the presence of galactic cirrus and demonstrate that cosmic infrared background (CIB) galaxy counts can be recovered in cases of significant contamination. In the second we show that the spatially extended thermal Sunyaev-Zel'dovich (tSZ) effect signal can be reliably measured even when it is subdominant to the point-like emission from individual galaxies.Comment: 23 pages, 13 figures, Accepted for publication in The Astronomical Journa

    Control of assembly of extra-axonemal structures: The paraflagellar rod of trypanosomes

    Eukaryotic flagella are complex microtubule based organelles and in many organisms there are extra axonemal structures present, including the outer dense fibres of mammalian sperm and the paraflagellar rod (PFR) of trypanosomes. Flagellum assembly is a complex process occurring across three main compartments, the cytoplasm, the transition fibre-transition zone, and the flagellum. It begins with translation of protein components, followed by their sorting and trafficking into the flagellum, transport to the assembly site and then incorporation. Flagella are formed from over 500 proteins; the principles governing axonemal component assembly are relatively clear. However, the coordination and sites of extra-axonemal structure assembly processes are less clear. We have discovered two cytoplasmic proteins in T. brucei that are required for PFR formation, PFR assembly factors 1 and 2. Deletion of either PFR-AF1 or PFR-AF2 dramatically disrupted PFR formation and caused a reduction in the amount of major PFR proteins. The presence of cytoplasmic factors required for PFR formation aligns with the concept of processes occurring across multiple compartments to facilitate axoneme assembly and this is likely a common theme for extra-axonemal structure assembly

    Non-equivalence in old- and new-flagellum daughter cells of a proliferative division in Trypanosoma brucei

    Differentiation of Trypanosoma brucei, a flagellated protozoan parasite, between life cycle stages typically occurs through an asymmetric cell division process, producing two morphologically distinct daughter cells. Conversely, proliferative cell divisions produce two daughter cells, which look similar but are not identical. To examine in detail differences between the daughter cells of a proliferative division of procyclic T. brucei we used the recently identified constituents of the flagella connector. These segregate asymmetrically during cytokinesis allowing the new-flagellum and the old-flagellum daughters to be distinguished. We discovered that there are distinct morphological differences between the two daughters, with the new-flagellum daughter in particular re-modelling rapidly and extensively in early G1. This re-modelling process involves an increase in cell body, flagellum, and flagellum attachment zone length and is accompanied by architectural changes to the anterior cell end. The old-flagellum daughter undergoes a different G1 re-modelling, however, despite this there was no difference in G1 duration of their respective cell cycles. This work demonstrates that two daughters of a proliferative division of T. brucei are non-equivalent and enables more refined morphological analysis of mutant phenotypes. We suggest all proliferative divisions in T. brucei and related organisms will involve non-equivalence

    CEP164C regulates flagellum length in stable flagella

    Cilia and flagella are required for cell motility and sensing the external environment and can vary in both length and stability. Stable flagella maintain their length without shortening and lengthening and are proposed to “lock” at the end of growth, but molecular mechanisms for this lock are unknown. We show that CEP164C contributes to the locking mechanism at the base of the flagellum in Trypanosoma brucei . CEP164C localizes to mature basal bodies of fully assembled old flagella, but not to growing new flagella, and basal bodies only acquire CEP164C in the third cell cycle after initial assembly. Depletion of CEP164C leads to dysregulation of flagellum growth, with continued growth of the old flagellum, consistent with defects in a flagellum locking mechanism. Inhibiting cytokinesis results in CEP164C acquisition on the new flagellum once it reaches the old flagellum length. These results provide the first insight into the molecular mechanisms regulating flagella growth in cells that must maintain existing flagella while growing new flagella
