    Targeted Protein Degradation as a Promising Tool for Epigenetic Upregulation of Fetal Hemoglobin

    The level of fetal hemoglobin (HbF) is an important disease modifier for β-thalassemia and sickle cell disease patients. Indeed, genetic tinkering with the HbF repression machinery has demonstrated great potential for disease mitigation. Such genetic treatments are costly and the high incidence of β-hemoglobinopathies in low-income countries, therefore, calls for the development of affordable, off-the-shelf, oral treatments. The use of PROTAC (PRoteolysis TArgeting Chimeras) technology to influence the epigenetic mechanisms involved in HbF suppression may provide a solution. In this minireview, we briefly explain the HbF repression network highlighting the epigenetic factors that could be targeted for degradation by PROTACs. We hope that this review will inspire clinicians, molecular and chemical biologists to collaborate and contribute to this fascinating field, which should ultimately deliver drugs that reactivate HbF expression with high specificity and low toxicity

    Phytophthora stem rot of purple passionfruit in Vietnam

    In August 2012 a severe stem rot (stem canker) disease was observed in a purple-fruit variety of passionfruit, Passiflora edulis, in Nghe An province, Vietnam. The stem rot progressed rapidly along the stem affecting branches and fruit, leading to chlorosis, wilting and death of the distal part of the stem. It did not progress below the graft junction into the stem or roots of the rootstock, Passiflora edulis var. flavicarpa. The disease spread within and between plantings causing 100 % loss of some plantings. Phytophthora nicotianae was consistently isolated from diseased tissue and the morphological identification was confirmed by sequencing, and two cultures were deposited in the Murdoch University Culture Collection as MUCC707 and MUCC708. The former culture proved pathogenic in stem inoculations and P. nicotianae was reisolated fulfilling Koch’s postulates. This report represents a new record of Phytophthora stem rot of purple passionfruit in Vietnam

    Diets, Food Choices and Environmental Impacts across an Urban-Rural Interface in Northern Vietnam

    Human diets and their associated environmental impacts differ across segments of the population. There is evidence that consumer choices of food intake can also affect the overall environmental impacts of a food system. This paper analyzes the environmental impact of diets and food choices across a rural–urban transect in Northern Vietnam by using mixed survey data from 619 adult respondents. The average greenhouse gas emissions (GHGE) resulting from producing the daily food intake of adults in the urban and peri-urban districts were similar, while the average in the rural district was lower. Although starchy staples contributed the most to energy intake, pork and beef were the largest contributors to GHGE. Metrics of blue water use were higher for diets of males than those of females in all three districts. Interestingly, the difference in mean diet diversity score between urban and rural households was significant, and females’ diets were more diverse than those of males. As expected, urban households were more likely to buy food, while rural households often produced their own foods. Urban households reported prioritizing personal health and the natural content of food and would increase seafood and fruits if their income were to increase. In rural regions, interventions aimed at reducing undernutrition should address improving diet quality without significant increases to diet-related environmental impacts
