Quantum Interference: From Kaons to Neutrinos (with Quantum Beats in between)
Using the vehicle of resolving an apparent paradox, a discussion of quantum
interference is presented. The understanding of a number of different physical
phenomena can be unified, in this context. These range from the neutral kaon
system to massive neutrinos, not to mention quantum beats, Rydberg wave

Lower limit on the neutralino mass in the general MSSM
We discuss constraints on SUSY models with non-unified gaugino masses and R_P
conservation. We derive a lower bound on the neutralino mass combining the
direct limits from LEP, the indirect limits from gmuon, bsgamma, Bsmumu and the
relic density constraint from WMAP. The lightest neutralino (mneutralino=6GeV)
is found in models with a light pseudoscalar with MA<200GeV and a large value
for . Models with heavy pseudoscalars lead to mneutralino>18(29)GeV
for . We show that even a very conservative bound from the
muon anomalous magnetic moment can increase the lower bound on the neutralino
mass in models with mu<0 and/or large values of . We then examine
the potential of the Tevatron and the direct detection experiments to probe the
SUSY models with the lightest neutralinos allowed in the context of light
pseudoscalars with high . We also examine the potential of an e+e-
collider of 500GeV to produce SUSY particles in all models with neutralinos
lighter than the W. In contrast to the mSUGRA models, observation of at least

Results on the performance of a broad band focussing Cherenkov counter
The field of ring imaging (broad band differential) Cherenkov detectors has become a very active area of interest in detector development at several high energy physics laboratories. Our group has previously reported on a method of Cherenkov ring imaging for a counter with large momentum and angular acceptance using standard photo multipliers. Recently, we have applied this technique to the design of a set of Cherenkov counters for use in a particle search experiment at Fermi National Accelerator Laboratory (FNAL). This new detector operates over the range 0.998 < ..beta.. < 1.000 in velocity with a delta..beta.. approx. 2 x 10/sup -4/. The acceptance in angle is +- 14 mrad in the horizontal and +- 28 mrad in the vertical. We report here on the performance of this counter
Conspicuous impacts of inconspicuous hosts on the Lyme disease epidemic
Emerging zoonotic pathogens are a constant threat to human health throughout the world. Control strategies to protect public health regularly fail, due in part to the tendency to focus on a single host species assumed to be the primary reservoir for a pathogen. Here, we present evidence that a diverse set of species can play an important role in determining disease risk to humans using Lyme disease as a model. Host-targeted public health strategies to control the Lyme disease epidemic in North America have focused on interrupting Borrelia burgdorferi sensu stricto (ss) transmission between blacklegged ticks and the putative dominant reservoir species, white-footed mice. However, B. burgdorferi ss infects more than a dozen vertebrate species, any of which could transmit the pathogen to feeding ticks and increase the density of infected ticks and Lyme disease risk. Using genetic and ecological data, we demonstrate that mice are neither the primary host for ticks nor the primary reservoir for B. burgdorferi ss, feeding 10% of all ticks and 25% of B. burgdorferi-infected ticks. Inconspicuous shrews feed 35% of all ticks and 55% of infected ticks. Because several important host species influence Lyme disease risk, interventions directed at a multiple host species will be required to control this epidemic
