Coulomb Drag between One-Dimensional Wigner Crystal Rings
We consider the Coulomb drag between two metal rings in which the long range
Coulomb interaction leads to the formation of a Wigner crystal. The first ring
is threaded by an Ahranov Bohm flux creating a persistent current J_0. The
second ring is brought in close proximity to the second and due to the Coulomb
interaction between the two rings a drag current J_D is produced in the second.
We investigate this system at zero temperature for perfect rings as well as the
effects of impurities. We show that the Wigner crystal state can in principle
lead to a higher ratio of drag current to drive current J_D/J_0 than in weakly

On the temperature dependence of ballistic Coulomb drag in nanowires
We have investigated within the theory of Fermi liquid dependence of Coulomb
drag current in a passive quantum wire on the applied voltage across an
active wire and on the temperature for any values of . We assume
that the bottoms of the 1D minibands in both wires almost coincide with the
Fermi level. We come to conclusions that 1) within a certain temperature
interval the drag current can be a descending function of the temperature ;
2) the experimentally observed temperature dependence of the drag
current can be interpreted within the framework of Fermi liquid theory; 3) at
relatively high applied voltages the drag current as a function of the applied
voltage saturates; 4) the screening of the electron potential by metallic gate
electrodes can be of importance.Comment: 7 pages, 1 figur
Coulomb drag between ballistic one-dimensional electron systems
The presence of pronounced electronic correlations in one-dimensional systems
strongly enhances Coulomb coupling and is expected to result in distinctive
features in the Coulomb drag between them that are absent in the drag between
two-dimensional systems. We review recent Fermi and Luttinger liquid theories
of Coulomb drag between ballistic one-dimensional electron systems, and give a
brief summary of the experimental work reported so far on one-dimensional drag.
Both the Fermi liquid (FL) and the Luttinger liquid (LL) theory predict a
maximum of the drag resistance R_D when the one-dimensional subbands of the two
quantum wires are aligned and the Fermi wave vector k_F is small, and also an
exponential decay of R_D with increasing inter-wire separation, both features
confirmed by experimental observations. A crucial difference between the two
theoretical models emerges in the temperature dependence of the drag effect.
Whereas the FL theory predicts a linear temperature dependence, the LL theory
promises a rich and varied dependence on temperature depending on the relative
magnitudes of the energy and length scales of the systems. At higher
temperatures, the drag should show a power-law dependence on temperature, R_D
\~ T^x, experimentally confirmed in a narrow temperature range, where x is
determined by the Luttinger liquid parameters. The spin degree of freedom plays
an important role in the LL theory in predicting the features of the drag

Relationship between fibre orientation and tensile strength of natural collagen membranes for heart valve leaflets
Heart valve prostheses are used to replace native heart valves which that are damaged because of congenital diseases or due to ageing. Biological prostheses made of bovine pericardium are similar to native valves and do not require any anticoagulation treatment, but are less durable than mechanical prostheses and usually fail by tearing. Researches are oriented in improving the resistance and durability of biological heart valve prostheses in order to increase their life expectancy. To understand the mechanical behaviour of bovine pericardium and relate it to its microstructure (mainly collagen fibres concentration and orientation) uniaxial tensile tests have been performed on a model material made of collagen fibres. Small Angle Light Scattering (SALS) has been also used to characterize the microstructure without damaging the material. Clinical-epidemiological features of HIV-infected patients diagnosed at age of 50 years or older
HIV/AIDS prevention and care efforts are directed to individuals of reproductive age (15–49 yrs). With the extension of sexual life of older people, they became a growing population at risk of HIV infection, usually not included in prevention strategies. In order to evaluate clinical profile of HIV/AIDS pts diagnosed at 50 yrs or older assisted in an HIV outpatient center in Buenos Aires, we retrospectively assessed clinical records of pts initiating care between Jan 1986 and Dec 2011. Age, CD4 cells and viral load (pVL) at HIV diagnosis and most recent value, opportunistic infections (OIs), co-morbidities and antiretroviral therapy (ARV) were recorded. Of 10,998 pts assisted in the 26-yr period, 495 (4.5%) were≥50 yrs old at HIV diagnosis; median annual diagnoses: 18.5 (IQR 3.3–30.3) without significant changes in the last 20 yrs. Demographics: median age 54.7 yrs (IQR 51.8–59.2, rank 50–80), 76.6% male. Risk behavior: HTX 61.4%, MSM 34.1%, others 4.4%. 55.4% of HIV diagnoses occurred during hospitalization or simultaneously with acute OIs. One third (n=176) had AIDS at diagnosis, 24% had history of STDs. HCV co-infection 5.7%, past HBV infection 28.1% and chronic HBV infection 5.1%. Median CD4 cells at HIV diagnosis: 223.5 (13.7%) (IQR 98.8–420.3), initial pVL 60,000 cp/mL (IQR 9,995.5–208,391). 69.3% of pts started ARV therapy during follow-up (FU), and the median time between diagnosis and treatment initiation was 3.4 mo (IQR 0.7–14); 56.9% of them started a non-nucleoside-based regimen (ZDV/3TC/EFV), 28.3% a PI-based regimen (ZDV/3TC/IDV) and 14.6% a nucleoside-based regimen (ZDV/ddI pre-HAART era). After a year (±6 mo), 63.8% pts achieved undetectable pVL and gained 136 CD4 cells from BSL (IQR 83–204). After 40.6 mo of FU (IQR 6.7-89.8), 66.3% are alive, 7.1% died (68.6% of HIV-related diseases) and 26.7% are lost to FU. Co-morbidities were present in 125 (25.3%), mainly hypertension, increased lipids, CVD and DBT. Among treated pts, 70.6% achieved pVL<50 cp/mL, with a median increase of CD4 cells up to 410 (22%) (IQR 281.5–563.9) from BSL. 51% (176) changed ARV therapy due to toxicity/AE: 54.5%, ARV failure: 29.5% and simplification: 14.8%. Stable HIV epidemic in older people reinforce the need of specific prevention approaches, while growing age of HIV individuals in care highlights to consider risks associated to older age. Late presentation to care needs to be specifically addressed. Response to treatment is remarkable high in this population
