    We evaluate the exact equilibrium distribution of gas molecules adsorbed on an active surface with an infinite number of attachment sites. Our result is a Poisson distribution having mean X=μPPsPeX = {\mu P P_s \over P_e}, with μ\mu the mean gas density, Ps P_s the sticking probability, PeP_e the evaporation probability in a time interval τ\tau, and PP Smoluchowski's exit probability in time interval τ\tau for the surface in question.     Opportunities for nurses to increase parental health literacy: a discussion paper

    Most families can access a range of health information and advice. Information and advice sources often include nurses, the Internet, social media, books, as well as family and friends. While the immediate aim may be to find information, it can also be to assist with parenting skills, solve parenting problems or as part of decision-making processes about their child’s health. These processes are strongly influenced by the parent’s level of health literacy. Health literacy describes a person’s capacity to obtain and utilize health related information. Although there are numerous health literacy definitions all have clearly defined steps. These steps are: obtaining relevant information; then understanding this information; and finally being able to use the information to achieve the expected outcome. Previous research has linked low levels of parental health literacy with poorer child health outcomes. Given this link, increasing health literacy levels would be advantageous for both families and health services. Nurses working with families are in a position to support the family to increase their health literacy through the use of a variety of strategies. This article outlines how health literacy can influence the way parents seek help when they are concerned about child health issues, the relevance of parental health literacy for nurses and suggests some tools that could be used to support the increase of health literacy

    We present a theory that accurately describes the counting of excited states of a noninteracting fermionic gas. At high excitation energies the results reproduce Bethe's theory. At low energies oscillatory corrections to the many--body density of states, related to shell effects, are obtained. The fluctuations depend non-trivially on energy and particle number. Universality and connections with Poisson statistics and random matrix theory are established for regular and chaotic single--particle motion.Comment: 4 pages, 1 figur

    Adiabatic orientation of rotating dipole molecules in an external field

    The induced polarization of a beam of polar clusters or molecules passing through an electric or magnetic field region differs from the textbook Langevin-Debye susceptibility. This distinction, which is important for the interpretation of deflection and focusing experiments, arises because instead of acquiring thermal equilibrium in the field region, the beam ensemble typically enters the field adiabatically, i.e., with a previously fixed distribution of rotational states. We discuss the orientation of rigid symmetric-top systems with a body-fixed electric or magnetic dipole moment. The analytical expression for their "adiabatic-entry" orientation is elucidated and compared with exact numerical results for a range of parameters. The differences between the polarization of thermodynamic and "adiabatic-entry" ensembles, of prolate and oblate tops, and of symmetric-top and linear rotators are illustrated and identified.Comment: 18 pages, 4 figure

    Preliminary Estimates of the Possibilities for Developing a Deployable Greenhouse for a Planetary Surface (Mars)

    Two of the main conditions for plant growth and development on the Martian surface are irradiation (optimal range from 80 W/sq m to 180 W/sq m of photosynthetically active radiation) and temperature (optimal range from 20 C to 27 C). The only known natural source of energy on Mars is sunlight, with a general intensity of 589 +/- 142 W/sq m (Martian Solar Constant). Comparisons of plant growth requirements with conditions on the Martian surface are presented in Table 1, while some basic considerations for implementing plant growth in a Martian DG are presented in Table 2. The general scenario and approximate schedule of startup and development of operations in DG are shown in Table 3

    Logarithmic growth dynamics in software networks

    In a recent paper, Krapivsky and Redner (Phys. Rev. E, 71 (2005) 036118) proposed a new growing network model with new nodes being attached to a randomly selected node, as well to all ancestors of the target node. The model leads to a sparse graph with an average degree growing logarithmically with the system size. Here we present compeling evidence for software networks being the result of a similar class of growing dynamics. The predicted pattern of network growth, as well as the stationary in- and out-degree distributions are consistent with the model. Our results confirm the view of large-scale software topology being generated through duplication-rewiring mechanisms.
