COMPARING THE EFFECTIVENESS OF ONE- AND TWO-STEP CONDITIONAL LOGIT MODELS FOR PREDICTING OUTCOMES IN A SPECULATIVE MARKET

    Get PDF
This paper compares two approaches to predicting outcomes in a speculative market, the horse race betting market. In particular, the nature of one-and two-step conditional logit procedures involving a process for exploding the choices et are outlined, their strengths and weaknesses are compared and the irrelative effectiveness is  evaluated by predicting winning probabilities for horse races at a UK racetrack. The models incorporate variables which are widely recognised as having predictive power and which should therefore be effectively discounted in market odds. Despite this handicap, both approaches produce probability estimates which can be used to earn positive returns, but the two-step approach yields substantially higher profits

Parallel fabrication and single-electron charging of devices based on ordered, two-dimensional phases of organically functionalized metal nanocrystals

    Get PDF
A parallel technique for fabricating single-electron, solid-state capacitance devices from ordered, two-dimensional closest-packed phases of organically functionalized metal nanocrystals is presented. The nanocrystal phases were prepared as Langmuir monolayers and subsequently transferred onto Al-electrode patterned glass substrates for device construction. Alternating current impedance measurements were carried out to probe the single-electron charging characteristics of the devices under both ambient and 77 K conditions. Evidence of a Coulomb blockade and step structure reminiscent of a Coulomb staircase is presented

A Non-Fermi Liquid from a Charged Black Hole; A Critical Fermi Ball

Using the AdS/CFT correspondence, we calculate a fermionic spectral function in a 2+1 dimensional non-relativistic quantum field theory which is dual to a gravitational theory in the AdS4AdS_4 background with a charged black hole. The spectral function shows no quasiparticle peak but the Fermi surface is still well defined. Interestingly, all momentum points inside the Fermi surface are critical and the gapless modes are defined in a {\it critical Fermi ball} in the momentum space.Comment: v3) discussion on the singular nature of the zero energy peak added; to appear in Phys. Capacitively coupled Josephson-junction chains: straight and slanted coupling

Two chains of ultrasmall Josephson junctions, coupled capacitively with each other in the two different ways, straight and slanted coupling, are considered. As the coupling capacitance increases, regardless of the coupling scheme, the transport of particle-hole pairs in the system is found to drive the quantum-phase transition at zero temperature, which is a insulator-to-superfluid transition of the particle-hole pairs and belongs to the Berezinskii-Kosterlitz-Thouless universal class. The different underlying transport mechanisms for the two coupling schemes are reflected in the difference between the transition points.Comment: REVTeX + 7 EPS figures, detailed version of cond-mat/980219

Elastic constants of borocarbides. New approach to acoustic Measurement technique

A new version of the phase method of determining the sound velocity is proposed and implemented. It utilizes the ``Nonius'' measurement technique and can give acceptable accuracy (~1%) in samples of submillimeter size. Measurements of the sound velocity are made in single-crystal samples of the borocarbides RNi2B2C (R = Y,Lu,Ho). The elastic constants and the Debye temperature are calculated.Comment: 5 figures, 2 table

Discrete Symmetries on the Light Front and a General Relation Connecting Nucleon Electric Dipole and Anomalous Magnetic Moments

We consider the electric dipole form factor, F_3(q^2), as well as the Dirac and Pauli form factors, F_1(q^2) and F_2(q^2), of the nucleon in the light-front formalism. We derive an exact formula for F_3(q^2) to complement those known for F_1(q^2) and F_2(q^2). We derive the light-front representation of the discrete symmetry transformations and show that time-reversal- and parity-odd effects are captured by phases in the light-front wave functions. We thus determine that the contributions to F_2(q^2) and F_3(q^2), Fock state by Fock state, are related, independent of the fundamental mechanism through which CP violation is generated. Our relation is not specific to the nucleon, but, rather, is true of spin-1/2 systems in general, be they lepton or baryon. The empirical values of the anomalous magnetic moments, in concert with empirical bounds on the associated electric dipole moments, can better constrain theories of CP violation. In particular, we find that the neutron and proton electric dipole moments echo the isospin structure of the anomalous magnetic moments, kappa^n ~ - kappa^p.Comment: 25 pages, 1 figure. Onset of dendritic flux avalanches in superconducting films

We report a detailed comparison of experimental data and theoretical predictions for the dendritic flux instability, believed to be a generic behavior of type-II superconducting films. It is shown that a thermo-magnetic model published very recently [Phys. Rev. B 73, 014512 (2006)] gives an excellent quantitative description of key features like the instability onset (first dendrite appearance) magnetic field, and how the onset field depends on both temperature and sample size. The measurements were made using magneto-optical imaging on a series of different strip-shaped samples of MgB2. Excellent agreement is also obtained by reanalyzing data previously published for Nb.Comment: 4 pages, 5 figure

Solutions with intersecting p-branes related to Toda chains

    Get PDF
Solutions in multidimensional gravity with m p-branes related to Toda-like systems (of general type) are obtained. These solutions are defined on a product of n+1 Ricci-flat spaces M_0 x M_1 x...x M_n and are governed by one harmonic function on M_0. The solutions are defined up to the solutions of Laplace and Toda-type equations and correspond to null-geodesics of the (sigma-model) target-space metric. Special solutions relating to A_m Toda chains (e.g. with m =1,2) are considered.Comment: 20 pages, Latex, to be submit. to JM
