    The trend for decreasing the drag of aircraft is retention of laminar flow in the boundary layer over a large portion of the surface. The laminar boundary layer was studied in a low turbulence wind tunnel for low subsonic velocities. The method used and results of measurements of very low levels of turbulence are presented.     On the validity of ADM formulation in 2D quantum gravity

    We investigate 2d gravity quantized in the ADM formulation, where only the loop length l(z)l(z) is retained as a dynamical variable of the gravitation, in order to get an intuitive physical insight of the theory. The effective action of l(z)l(z) is calculated by adding scalar fields of conformal coupling, and the problems of the critical dimension and the time development of ll are addressed.Comment: 12 page

It is based on resummation of perturbation series for the heat kernel and its functional trace at large values of the proper time parameter.     The third Poisson structure of KdV equation in terms of canonical ``free fields'' and reduced WZNW model is discussed. We prove that it is ``diagonalized'' in the Lagrange variables which were used before in formulation of 2D gravity.     An Exact Solution to O(26) Sigma Model coupled to 2-D Gravity

    By a mapping to the bosonic string theory, we present an exact solution to the O(26) sigma model coupled to 2-D quantum gravity. In particular, we obtain the exact gravitational dressing to the various matter operators classified by the irreducible representations of O(26). We also derive the exact form of the gravitationally modified beta function for the original coupling constant e2e^2.     Identification of earthquake precursors in the hydrogeochemical and geoacoustic data for the Kamchatka peninsula by flicker-noise spectroscopy

    A phenomenological systems approach for identifying potential precursors in multiple signals of different types for the same local seismically active region is proposed based on the assumption that a large earthquake may be preceded by a system reconfiguration (preparation) at different time and space scales. A nonstationarity factor introduced within the framework of flicker-noise spectroscopy, a statistical physics approach to the analysis of time series, is used as the dimensionless criterion for detecting qualitative (precursory) changes within relatively short time intervals in arbitrary signals. Nonstationarity factors for chlorine-ion concentration variations in the underground water of two boreholes on the Kamchatka peninsula and geacoustic emissions in a deep borehole within the same seismic zone are studied together in the time frame around a large earthquake on October 8, 2001. It is shown that nonstationarity factor spikes (potential precursors) take place in the interval from 70 to 50 days before the earthquake for the hydrogeochemical data and at 29 and 6 days in advance for the geoacoustic data.Comment: 8 pages, 4 figures; to be published in Nat.     Confinement in Gauge Theories from the Condensation of World-Sheet Defects in Liouville String

    We present a Liouville-string approach to confinement in four-dimensional gauge theories, which extends previous approaches to include non-conformal theories. We consider Liouville field theory on world sheets whose boundaries are the Wilson loops of gauge theory, which exhibit vortex and spike defects. We show that world-sheet vortex condensation occurs when the Wilson loop is embedded in four target space-time dimensions, and show that this corresponds to the condensation of gauge magnetic monopoles in target space. We also show that vortex condensation generates a effective string tension corresponding to the confinement of electric degrees of freedom. The tension is independent of the string length in a gauge theory whose electric coupling varies logarithmically with the length scale. The Liouville field is naturally interpreted as an extra target dimension, with an anti-de-Sitter (AdS) structure induced by recoil effects on the gauge monopoles, interpreted as D branes of the effective string theory. Black holes in the bulk AdS space correspond to world-sheet defects, so that phases of the bulk gravitational system correspond to the different world-sheet phases, and hence to different phases of the four-dimensional gauge theory. Deconfinement is associated with a Berezinskii-Kosterlitz-Thouless transition of vortices on the Wilson-loop world sheet, corresponding in turn to a phase transition of the black holes in the bulk AdS space.Comment: 29 pages LATEX, three eps figures incorporate

    We consider the gauge potential A and argue that the minimum value of the volume integral of A squared (in Euclidean space) may have physical meaning, particularly in connection with the existence of topological structures.
