Open Gromov-Witten Invariants of Toric Calabi-Yau 3-Folds
We present a proof of the mirror conjecture of Aganagic-Vafa
[arXiv:hep-th/0012041] and Aganagic-Klemm-Vafa [arXiv:hep-th/0105045] on disk
enumeration in toric Calabi-Yau 3-folds for all smooth semi-projective toric
Calabi-Yau 3-folds. We consider both inner and outer branes, at arbitrary
framing. In particular, we recover previous results on the conjecture for (i)
an inner brane at zero framing in the total space of the canonical line bundle
of the projective plane (Graber-Zaslow [arXiv:hep-th/0109075]), (ii) an outer
brane at arbitrary framing in the resolved conifold (Zhou [arXiv:1001.0447]),
and (iii) an outer brane at zero framing in the total space of the canonical
line bundle of the projective plane (Brini [arXiv:1102.0281, Section 5.3]).Comment: 39 pages, 11 figure
Enumerative geometry of Calabi-Yau 4-folds
Gromov-Witten theory is used to define an enumerative geometry of curves in
Calabi-Yau 4-folds. The main technique is to find exact solutions to moving
multiple cover integrals. The resulting invariants are analogous to the BPS
counts of Gopakumar and Vafa for Calabi-Yau 3-folds. We conjecture the 4-fold
invariants to be integers and expect a sheaf theoretic explanation.
Several local Calabi-Yau 4-folds are solved exactly. Compact cases, including
the sextic Calabi-Yau in CP5, are also studied. A complete solution of the
Gromov-Witten theory of the sextic is conjecturally obtained by the holomorphic
anomaly equation.Comment: 44 page
Decoupling A and B model in open string theory -- Topological adventures in the world of tadpoles
In this paper we analyze the problem of tadpole cancellation in open
topological strings. We prove that the inclusion of unorientable worldsheet
diagrams guarantees a consistent decoupling of A and B model for open
superstring amplitudes at all genera. This is proven by direct microscopic
computation in Super Conformal Field Theory. For the B-model we explicitly
calculate one loop amplitudes in terms of analytic Ray-Singer torsions of
appropriate vector bundles and obtain that the decoupling corresponds to the
cancellation of D-brane and orientifold charges. Local tadpole cancellation on
the worldsheet then guarantees the decoupling at all loops. The holomorphic
anomaly equations for open topological strings at one loop are also obtained
and compared with the results of the Quillen formula

The class of the locus of intermediate Jacobians of cubic threefolds
We study the locus of intermediate Jacobians of cubic threefolds within the
moduli space of complex principally polarized abelian fivefolds, and its
generalization to arbitrary genus - the locus of abelian varieties with a
singular odd two-torsion point on the theta divisor. Assuming that this locus
has expected codimension (which we show to be true for genus up to 5), we
compute the class of this locus, and of is closure in the perfect cone toroidal
compactification, in the Chow, homology, and the tautological ring.
We work out the cases of genus up to 5 in detail, obtaining explicit
expressions for the classes of the closures of the locus of products of an
elliptic curve and a hyperelliptic genus 3 curve, in moduli of principally
polarized abelian fourfolds, and of the locus of intermediate Jacobians in
genus 5. In the course of our computation we also deal with various
intersections of boundary divisors of a level toroidal compactification, which
is of independent interest in understanding the cohomology and Chow rings of

Suicide prevention for youth - a mental health awareness program: lessons learned from the Saving and Empowering Young Lives in Europe (SEYLE) intervention study.
ABSTRACT: BACKGROUND: The Awareness program was designed as a part of the EU-funded Saving and Empowering Young Lives in Europe (SEYLE) intervention study to promote mental health of adolescents in 11 European countries by helping them to develop problem-solving skills and encouraging them to self-recognize the need for help as well as how to help peers in need. METHODS: For this descriptive study all coordinators of the SEYLE Awareness program answered an open-ended evaluation questionnaire at the end of the project implementation. Their answers were synthesized and analyzed and are presented here. RESULTS: The results show that the program cultivated peer understanding and support. Adolescents not only learned about mental health by participating in the Awareness program, but the majority of them also greatly enjoyed the experience. CONCLUSIONS: Recommendations for enhancing the successes of mental health awareness programs are presented. Help and cooperation from schools, teachers, local politicians and other stakeholders will lead to more efficacious future programs
Constraining the nature of the 18-min periodic radio transient GLEAM-X J162759.5-523504.3 via multi-wavelength observations and magneto-thermal simulations
We observed the periodic radio transient GLEAM-X J162759.5-523504.3 (GLEAM-X
J1627) using the Chandra X-ray Observatory for about 30-ks on January 22-23,
2022, simultaneously with radio observations from MWA, MeerKAT and ATCA. Its
radio emission and 18-min periodicity led the source to be tentatively
interpreted as an extreme magnetar or a peculiar highly magnetic white dwarf.
The source was not detected in the 0.3-8 keV energy range with a 3-sigma
upper-limit on the count rate of 3x10^{-4} counts/s. No radio emission was
detected during our X-ray observations either. Furthermore, we studied the
field around GLEAM-X J1627 using archival ESO and DECam data, as well as recent
SALT observations. Many sources are present close to the position of GLEAM-X
J1627, but only two within the 2" radio position uncertainty. Depending on the
assumed spectral distribution, the upper limits converted to an X-ray
luminosity of L_{X}<6.5x10^{29} erg/s for a blackbody with temperature kT=0.3
keV, or L_{X}<9x10^{29} erg/s for a power-law with photon index Gamma = 2
(assuming a 1.3 kpc distance). Furthermore, we performed magneto-thermal
simulations for neutron stars considering crust- and core-dominated field
configurations. Based on our multi-band limits, we conclude that: i) in the
magnetar scenario, the X-ray upper limits suggest that GLEAM-X J1627 should be
older than ~1 Myr, unless it has a core-dominated magnetic field or has
experienced fast-cooling; ii) in the white dwarf scenario, we can rule out most
binary systems, a hot sub-dwarf and a hot magnetic isolated white dwarf
(T>10.000 K), while a cold isolated white dwarf is still compatible with our

Annotation of two large contiguous regions from the Haemonchus contortus genome using RNA-seq and comparative analysis with Caenorhabditis elegans
The genomes of numerous parasitic nematodes are currently being sequenced, but their complexity and size, together with high levels of intra-specific sequence variation and a lack of reference genomes, makes their assembly and annotation a challenging task. Haemonchus contortus is an economically significant parasite of livestock that is widely used for basic research as well as for vaccine development and drug discovery. It is one of many medically and economically important parasites within the strongylid nematode group. This group of parasites has the closest phylogenetic relationship with the model organism Caenorhabditis elegans, making comparative analysis a potentially powerful tool for genome annotation and functional studies. To investigate this hypothesis, we sequenced two contiguous fragments from the H. contortus genome and undertook detailed annotation and comparative analysis with C. elegans. The adult H. contortus transcriptome was sequenced using an Illumina platform and RNA-seq was used to annotate a 409 kb overlapping BAC tiling path relating to the X chromosome and a 181 kb BAC insert relating to chromosome I. In total, 40 genes and 12 putative transposable elements were identified. 97.5% of the annotated genes had detectable homologues in C. elegans of which 60% had putative orthologues, significantly higher than previous analyses based on EST analysis. Gene density appears to be less in H. contortus than in C. elegans, with annotated H. contortus genes being an average of two-to-three times larger than their putative C. elegans orthologues due to a greater intron number and size. Synteny appears high but gene order is generally poorly conserved, although areas of conserved microsynteny are apparent. C. elegans operons appear to be partially conserved in H. contortus. Our findings suggest that a combination of RNA-seq and comparative analysis with C. elegans is a powerful approach for the annotation and analysis of strongylid nematode genomes
Prevalence of pathological internet use among adolescents in Europe: demographic and social factors.
AIMS:
To investigate the prevalence of pathological internet use (PIU) and maladaptive internet use (MIU) among adolescents in 11 European countries in relation to demographic, social factors and internet accessibility.
DESIGN:
Cross-sectional survey.
SETTING:
The 7th Framework European Union (EU) funded project, Saving and Empowering Young Lives in Europe (SEYLE), is a randomized controlled trial (RCT) evaluating interventions for risk behaviours among adolescents in Austria, Estonia, France, Germany, Hungary, Ireland, Israel, Italy, Romania, Slovenia and Spain, with Sweden serving as the coordinating centre.
PARTICIPANTS:
A total of 11 956 adolescents (female/male: 6731/5225; mean age: 14.9 ± 0.89) recruited from randomly selected schools within the 11 study sites.
MEASUREMENTS:
Internet users were classified by gender into three categories: adaptive, maladaptive and pathological, based on their score in the Young Diagnostic Questionnaire for Internet Addiction (YDQ).
FINDINGS:
The overall prevalence of PIU was 4.4%; it was higher among males than females (5.2% versus 3.8%) and differed between countries (χ(2)  = 309.98; d.f. = 20; P < 0.001). PIU correlated significantly with mean hours online and male gender. The highest-ranked online activities were watching videos, frequenting chatrooms and social networking; significantly higher rates of playing single-user games were found in males and social networking in females. Living in metropolitan areas was associated with PIU. Students not living with a biological parent, low parental involvement and parental unemployment showed the highest relative risks of both MIU and PIU.
CONCLUSIONS:
Across a range of countries in Europe, using the Young Diagnostic Questionnaire for Internet Addiction yields a prevalence of 'pathological internet use' of 4.4% among adolescents, but varies by country and gender; adolescents lacking emotional and psychological support are at highest risk
