Exponentially Accurate Semiclassical Tunneling Wave Functions in One Dimension
We study the time behavior of wave functions involved in tunneling through a
smooth potential barrier in one dimension in the semiclassical limit. We
determine the leading order component of the wave function that tunnels. It is
exponentially small in . For a wide variety of incoming wave packets,
the leading order tunneling component is Gaussian for sufficiently small
. We prove this for both the large time asymptotics and for moderately
large values of the time variable
Spin Hall effect of Photons in a Static Gravitational Field
Starting from a Hamiltonian description of the photon within the set of
Bargmann-Wigner equations we derive new semiclassical equations of motion for
the photon propagating in static gravitational field. These equations which are
obtained in the representation diagonalizing the Hamiltonian at the order
, present the first order corrections to the geometrical optics. The
photon Hamiltonian shows a new kind of helicity-magnetotorsion coupling.
However, even for a torsionless space-time, photons do not follow the usual
null geodesic as a consequence of an anomalous velocity term. This term is
responsible for the gravitational birefringence phenomenon: photons with
distinct helicity follow different geodesics in a static gravitational field.Comment: 6 page
Working with the market : a new approach to reducing urban slums in India
This paper examines the policy options for India as it seeks to improve living conditions of the poor on a large scale and reduce the population in slums. Addressing the problem requires first a diagnosis of the market at the city level and a recognition that government interventions, rather than thwarting the operations of the market, should seek to make it operate better. This can substantially reduce the subsidies required to assist low income households to attain decent living standards. The authors show that government programs that directly provide housing would cost, in conservative estimates, about of 20 to 30 percent of GDP, and cannot solve a problem on the scale of India's. Using two case studies, for Mumbai and Ahmedabad, the paper offers a critical examination of government policies that shape the real estate market and make formal housing unaffordable for a large part of the population. It illustrates how simple city level market diagnostics can be used to identify policy changes and design smaller assistance programs that can reach the poor. The linkage between chronic infrastructure backlogs and policies makes housing unnecessarily expensive. Increasing the carrying capacity of cities is essential for gaining acceptance of real estate policies suited to Indian cities. Method for Computing Short-Range Forces between Solid-Liquid Interfaces Driving Grain Boundary Premelting
We present a molecular dynamics based method for computing accurately
short-range structural forces resulting from the overlap of spatially diffuse
solid-liquid interfaces at wetted grain boundaries close to the melting point.
The method is based on monitoring the fluctuations of the liquid layer width at
different temperatures to extract the excess interfacial free-energy as a
function of this width. The method is illustrated for a high energy Sigma 9
twist boundary in pure Ni. The short-range repulsion driving premelting is
found to be dominant in comparison to long-range dispersion and entropic forces
and consistent with previous experimental findings that nanometer-scale layer
widths may only be observed very close to the melting point.Comment: 5 pages, four figure
Gain modulation of synaptic inputs by network state in auditory cortex in vivo
The cortical network recurrent circuitry generates spontaneous activity organized into Up (active) and Down (quiescent) states during slow-wave sleep or anesthesia. These different states of cortical activation gain modulate synaptic transmission. However, the reported modulation that Up states impose on synaptic inputs is disparate in the literature, including both increases and decreases of responsiveness. Here, we tested the hypothesis that such disparate observations may depend on the intensity of the stimulation. By means of intracellular recordings, we studied synaptic transmission during Up and Down states in rat auditory cortex in vivo. Synaptic potentials were evoked either by auditory or electrical (thalamocortical, intracortical) stimulation while randomly varying the intensity of the stimulus. Synaptic potentials evoked by the same stimulus intensity were compared in Up/Down states. Up states had a scaling effect on the stimulus-evoked synaptic responses: the amplitude of weaker responses was potentiated whereas that of larger responses was maintained or decreased with respect to the amplitude during Down states. We used a computational model to explore the potential mechanisms explaining this nontrivial stimulus–response relationship. During Up/Down states, there is different excitability in the network and the neuronal conductance varies. We demonstrate that the competition between presynaptic recruitment and the changing conductance might be the central mechanism explaining the experimentally observed stimulus–response relationships. We conclude that the effect that cortical network activation has on synaptic transmission is not constant but contingent on the strength of the stimulation, with a larger modulation for stimuli involving both thalamic and cortical networks.Fil: Reig, Ramon.
