Strandings of whales along Gulf of Mannar and Palk Bay
Whale strandings occurred frequently along the southeast coasts of India along Gulf of Mannar and Palk bay during Dec 2005 and August 2006
Haidinger's rings in curved plates
The paper describes and illustrates the haidinger interference patterns observed in curved plates of uniform thickness but of arbitrary form, and discusses their theory. Using an illuminated screen as light source and a limited viewing aperture, it is possible to observe such patterns with curved plates, their configuration depending upon the form of the plate as well as the position of the aperture with reference to the centers of curvature of the surface of the plate. It is pointed out that the interference pattern for a curved plate is geometrically similar in form to the image of the standard haidinger pattern of circular rings as seen viewed by reflection at the appropriate distance from the curved surface of the shell

Seaweed culture in India-an appraisal
In recent years there has been a steady increase in the demand for naturally occuring seaweeds
as a result of many seaweed based industries coming up. In order to meet the raw material requirement
of these industries attempts have been made in this country to develop suitable seaweed farming techniques
by some Institutes notably the CMFRI at its Mandepam. Regional Centre and CSMCRI at its field
centre, Mandapam. Experimental culture of economically important seaweeds such as Gracllaria
edulis, Gelidiella acerosa and other species was undertaken since 1972 at Mandapam- in these
experiments production rates ranging from 3 to 8 times the initial wet weight were obtained. The
techniques of seaweed culture, the favourable seasons optimum duration of culture period and the
influence of environmental parameters are discussed in this account with notes on economics of
seaweed culture. General information on the seaweed resources slong our coasts, their potential for
exploitation and culture are also highlighted
A New Extension of Two Parameter Pranav Distribution with Applications in Industrial and Medical Sciences
In this study, a new distribution has been proposed called as weighted three parameter Pranav distribution. The different statistical properties of new distribution have been obtained which include moments, harmonic mean, order statistics, survival analysis, entropies, bonferroni and Lorenz curves. For estimating the model parameters of the new distribution, the technique of maximum likelihood estimation has been used. Finally, three real life data sets have been fitted in new distribution to discuss its goodness of fit
Seasonal variations in production of cultured seaweed Gracilaria edulis (Gmelin) Silva in Minicoy Lagoon (Lakshadweep)
With a view to finding out the feasibility of Lakshadweep lagoons for cultivation of Gracilaria edulis in Minicoy experimemal culture has been undenaken at four sites. Very encouraging results indicating high potential of about 8.1 fold increase for this species in the lagoon evironments of Minicoy was obtained. Seasonal variations in the growth of the culture seaweed is high-lighted in this account indicating favourable seasons and potential sites
Adiabatic times for Markov chains and applications
We state and prove a generalized adiabatic theorem for Markov chains and
provide examples and applications related to Glauber dynamics of Ising model
over Z^d/nZ^d. The theorems derived in this paper describe a type of adiabatic
dynamics for l^1(R_+^n) norm preserving, time inhomogeneous Markov
transformations, while quantum adiabatic theorems deal with l^2(C^n) norm
preserving ones, i.e. gradually changing unitary dynamics in C^n
