    Micro-Capsules in Shear Flow

    This paper deals with flow-induced shape transitions of elastic capsules. The state of the art concerning both theory and experiments is briefly reviewed starting with dynamically induced small deformation of initially spherical capsules and the formation of wrinkles on polymerized membranes. Initially non-spherical capsules show tumbling and tank-treading motion in shear flow. Theoretical descriptions of the transition between these two types of motion assuming a fixed shape are at variance with the full capsule dynamics obtained numerically. To resolve the discrepancy, we expand the exact equations of motion for small deformations and find that shape changes play a dominant role. We classify the dynamical phase transitions and obtain numerical and analytical results for the phase boundaries as a function of viscosity contrast, shear and elongational flow rate. We conclude with perspectives on timedependent flow, on shear-induced unbinding from surfaces, on the role of thermal fluctuations, and on applying the concepts of stochastic thermodynamics to these systems.Comment: 34 pages, 15 figure

    Nucleon-nucleon elastic scattering analysis to 2.5 GeV

    A partial-wave analysis of NN elastic scattering data has been completed. This analysis covers an expanded energy range, from threshold to a laboratory kinetic energy of 2.5 GeV, in order to include recent elastic pp scattering data from the EDDA collaboration.     Dynamics of Fluid Vesicles in Oscillatory Shear Flow

    The dynamics of fluid vesicles in oscillatory shear flow was studied using differential equations of two variables: the Taylor deformation parameter and inclination angle θ\theta. In a steady shear flow with a low viscosity ηin\eta_{\rm {in}} of internal fluid, the vesicles exhibit steady tank-treading motion with a constant inclination angle θ0\theta_0. In the oscillatory flow with a low shear frequency, θ\theta oscillates between ±θ0\pm \theta_0 or around θ0\theta_0 for zero or finite mean shear rate γ˙m\dot\gamma_{\rm m}, respectively. As shear frequency fγf_{\gamma} increases, the vesicle oscillation becomes delayed with respect to the shear oscillation, and the oscillation amplitude decreases. At high fγf_{\gamma} with γ˙m=0\dot\gamma_{\rm m}=0, another limit-cycle oscillation between θ0−π\theta_0-\pi and −θ0-\theta_0 is found to appear. In the steady flow, θ\theta periodically rotates (tumbling) at high ηin\eta_{\rm {in}}, and θ\theta and the vesicle shape oscillate (swinging) at middle ηin\eta_{\rm {in}} and high shear rate. In the oscillatory flow, the coexistence of two or more limit-cycle oscillations can occur for low fγf_{\gamma} in these phases. For the vesicle with a fixed shape, the angle θ\theta rotates back to the original position after an oscillation period. However, it is found that a preferred angle can be induced by small thermal fluctuations.Comment: 11 pages, 13 figure

    O(12) limit and complete classification of symmetry schemes in proton-neutron interacting boson model

    It is shown that the proton-neutron interacting boson model (pnIBM) admits new symmetry limits with O(12) algebra which break F-spin but preserves the quantum number M_F. The generators of O(12) are derived and the quantum number `v' of O(12) for a given boson number N is determined by identifying the corresponding quasi-spin algebra. The O(12) algebra generates two symmetry schemes and for both of them, complete classification of the basis states and typical spectra are given. With the O(12) algebra identified, complete classification of pnIBM symmetry limits with good M_F is established.Comment: 22 pages, 1 figur

    Measurement of the recoil polarization in the p (\vec e, e' \vec p) pi^0 reaction at the \Delta(1232) resonance

    The recoil proton polarization has been measured in the p (\vec e,e'\vec p) pi^0 reaction in parallel kinematics around W = 1232 MeV, Q^2 = 0.121 (GeV/c)^2 and epsilon = 0.718 using the polarized c.w. electron beam of the Mainz Microtron. Due to the spin precession in a magnetic spectrometer, all three proton polarization components P_x/P_e = (-11.4 \pm 1.3 \pm 1.4) %, P_y = (-43.1 \pm 1.3 \pm 2.2) %, and P_z/P_e = (56.2 \pm 1.5 \pm 2.6) % could be measured simultaneously. The Coulomb quadrupole to magnetic dipole ratio CMR = (-6.4\pm 0.7_{stat}\pm 0.8_{syst}) % was determined from P_x in the framework of the Mainz Unitary Isobar Model. The consistency among the reduced polarizations and the extraction of the ratio of longitudinal to transverse response is discussed.Comment: 5 pages LaTeX, 1 table, 2 eps figure

    Vitamin D deficiency and anemia: a cross-sectional study

    Vitamin D has been suggested to have an effect on erythropoiesis. We sought to evaluate the prevalence of anemia in a population of individuals with vitamin D deficiency compared with those with normal levels in a population of a large integrated healthplan. A cross-sectional analysis in the period 1 January 2004 through 31 December 2006 of subjects with documented concurrent levels of 25-hydroxyvitamin D and hemoglobin were evaluated. Vitamin D deficiency was defined as <30 ng/mL and anemia was defined as a hemoglobin <11 g/dL. A total of 554 subjects were included in the analysis. Anemia was present in 49% of 25-hydroxyvitamin D-deficient subjects compared with 36% with normal 25-hydroxyvitamin D levels (p < 0.01). Odds ratio for anemia in subjects with 25-hydroxyvitamin D deficiency using logistic regressions and controlling for age, gender, and chronic kidney disease was 1.9 (95% CI 1.3–2.7). 25-hydroxyvitamin D-deficient subjects had a lower mean Hb (11.0 vs. 11.7; p = 0.12 ) and a higher prevalence of erythrocyte stimulating agent use (47% vs. 24%; p < 0.05). This study demonstrates an association of vitamin D deficiency and a greater risk of anemia, lower mean hemoglobin, and higher usage of erythrocyte-stimulating agents. Future randomized studies are warranted to examine whether vitamin D directly affects erythropoiesis

    Comparative cytogenetics among populations of Astyanax altiparanae (Characiformes, Characidae, Incertae sedis)

    Cytogenetic data are presented for Astyanax altiparanae populations from three Brazilian hydrographic systems. The chromosomal data obtained in A. altiparanae support the hypothesis of diploid number conservation. However, small differences in the karyotype formula and number of nucleolar organizer regions were observed in these populations. The apparent karyotypical similarity among the studied populations strongly suggests a close relationship among them with some chromosomal divergences due to gene flow restriction

    Mass and width of sigma(750) scalar meson from measurements of piN->pi(-)pi(+)N on polarized targets

    The measurements of reactions π−p↑→π−π+n\pi^- p_\uparrow \to \pi^- \pi^+ n at 17.2 GeV/c and π+n↑→π+π−p\pi^+ n_\uparrow \to \pi^+ \pi^- p at 5.98 and 11.85 GeV/c made at CERN with polarized targets provide a model-independent and solution-independent evidence for a narrow scalar state sigma(750). The original chi^2 minimization method and the recent Monte Carlo method for amplitude analysis of data at 17.2 GeV/c are in excellent agreement. Both methods find that the mass distribution of the measured amplitude ∣S‾∣2Σ|\overline S |^2\Sigma with recoil transversity ``up'' resonates near 750 MeV while the amplitude ∣S∣2Σ|S|^2\Sigma with recoil transversity ``down'' is large and nonresonating. The amplitude ∣S∣2Σ|S|^2\Sigma contributes as a strong background to S-wave intensity I_S = (|S|^2 + |\overline S |^2)\Sigmaanddistortsthedeterminationsof and distorts the determinations of \sigmaresonanceparametersfrom resonance parameters from I_S.ToavoidthisproblemweperformaseriesofBreit−Wignerfitsdirectlytothemeasureddistribution. To avoid this problem we perform a series of Breit-Wigner fits directly to the measured distribution |\overline S |^2\Sigma.Theinclusionofvariousbackgroundscausesthewidthofsigma(750)tobecomeverynarrow.Ourbestfitwith. The inclusion of various backgrounds causes the width of sigma(750) to become very narrow. Our best fit with t−averagedcoherentbackgroundyields-averaged coherent background yields m_\sigma = 753 \pm 19MeVand MeV and \Gamma_\sigma = 108 \pm 53MeV.ThesevaluesareinexcellentagreementwithEllis−Laniktheoremforthewidthofscalargluonium.Thegluoniuminterpretationof MeV. These values are in excellent agreement with Ellis-Lanik theorem for the width of scalar gluonium. The gluonium interpretation of \sigma(750)isalsosupportedbytheabsenceof is also supported by the absence of \sigma(750)inreactions in reactions \gamma\gamma \to \pi\pi.Wealsoshowhowdataonpolarizedtargetinvalidateessentialassumptionsofpastdeterminationsof. We also show how data on polarized target invalidate essential assumptions of past determinations of \pi\pi$ phase shifts .Comment: 77 page
