    The Effect of Enzymatic Treatments of Pulps on Fiber and Paper Properties

    Biotechnological treatment of pulps provides great potential for the reduction of energy consumption and greenhouse gas emissions. In the present work, the influence of different commercial cellulases and xylanases or their mixtures on the quality of different bleached kraft pulps was investigated. The effects of enzymes on reducing sugars release and changes in fiber length were assessed for 3 different eucalyptus pulps, for a pulp consisting of a mixture of hardwoods and for softwood pulp. Despite the extremely high enzyme concentrations used in this part of the study, almost no change in fiber length was observed for pulps treated with enzyme preparations alone, while all combinations of cellulases and xylanases resulted in significant changes in average fiber length, portion of fines and reducing sugars release. Besides, vessel cell deformation was observed as a consequence of all enzymes applications. Furthermore, physical and mechanical properties of laboratory sheets made with enzymatically treated pulps were evaluated for various refining conditions and compared to those of untreated pulps. Potential energy savings up to 17 % were achieved with enzyme treatment, but some decrease in pulp quality was also observed

    Measurement of the radiative decay of polarized muons in the MEG experiment

    We studied the radiative muon decay μ+→e+ννˉγ\mu^+ \to e^+\nu\bar{\nu}\gamma by using for the first time an almost fully polarized muon source. We identified a large sample (~13000) of these decays in a total sample of 1.8x10^14 positive muon decays collected in the MEG experiment in the years 2009--2010 and measured the branching ratio B(μ+→e+ννˉγ\mu^+ \to e^+\nu\bar{\nu}\gamma) = (6.03+-0.14(stat.)+-0.53(sys.))x10^-8 for E_e > 45 MeV and E_{\gamma} > 40 MeV, consistent with the Standard Model prediction. The precise measurement of this decay mode provides a basic tool for the timing calibration, a normalization channel, and a strong quality check of the complete MEG experiment in the search for μ+→e+γ\mu^+ \to e^+\gamma process.Comment: 8 pages, 7 figures.     Survival of atraumatic restorative treatment (ART) sealants and restorations: a meta-analysis

    The purpose of this study is to perform a systematic investigation plus meta-analysis into survival of atraumatic restorative treatment (ART) sealants and restorations using high-viscosity glass ionomers and to compare the results with those from the 2005 ART meta-analysis. Until February 2010, four databases were searched. Two hundred four publications were found, and 66 reported on ART restorations or sealant survival. Based on five exclusion criteria, two independent reviewers selected the 29 publications that accounted for the meta-analysis. Confidence intervals (CI) and or standard errors were calculated and the heterogeneity variance of the survival rates was estimated. Location (school/clinic) was an independent variable. The survival rates of single-surface and multiple-surface ART restorations in primary teeth over the first 2 years were 93% (CI, 91–94%) and 62% (CI, 51–73%), respectively; for single-surface ART restorations in permanent teeth over the first 3 and 5 years it was 85% (CI, 77–91%) and 80% (CI, 76–83%), respectively and for multiple-surface ART restorations in permanent teeth over 1 year it was 86% (CI, 59–98%). The mean annual dentine lesion incidence rate, in pits and fissures previously sealed using ART, over the first 3 years was 1%. No location effect and no differences between the 2005 and 2010 survival rates of ART restorations and sealants were observed. The short-term survival rates of single-surface ART restorations in primary and permanent teeth, and the caries-preventive effect of ART sealants were high. Clinical relevance: ART can safely be used in single-surface cavities in both primary and permanent teeth. ART sealants have a high caries preventive effect

No significant excess of events is observed in the dataset with respect to the expected background and a new upper limit on the branching ratio of this decay of B(ÎĽ+→ e +Îł) < 4.2 Ă— 10 - 13 (90 % confidence level) is established, which represents the most stringent limit on the existence of this decay to date
