Topology and confinement at T \neq 0 : calorons with non-trivial holonomy
In this talk, relying on experience with various lattice filter techniques,
we argue that the semiclassical structure of finite temperature gauge fields
for T < T_c is dominated by calorons with non-trivial holonomy. By simulating a
dilute gas of calorons with identical holonomy, superposed in the algebraic
gauge, we are able to reproduce the confining properties below T_c up to
distances r = O(4 fm} >> \rho (the caloron size). We compute Polyakov loop
correlators as well as space-like Wilson loops for the fundamental and adjoint
representation. The model parameters, including the holonomy, can be inferred
from lattice results as functions of the temperature.Comment: Talk by M. M\"uller-Preussker at "Quark Confinement and Hadron

Pionic atoms probing pi-NN resonances
The pion optical potential generated by the hypothetical pi-NN-coupled
NN-decoupled dibaryon resonance d'(2065) is calculated to the lowest order in
nuclear matter density. The contribution to the pion optical potential is found
to be within the empirical errors, so the d'(2065) existence currently does not
contradict to the observed properties of the pi-nucleus bound states. Future
progress in the pionic X-ray spectroscopy can reveal contributions of pi-NN
resonances to energy levels and widths of the pionic atoms.Comment: 3 pages REVTEX, 1 ps figur

The Kr2Det project: Search for mass-3 state contribution |U_{e3}|^2 to the electron neutrino using a one reactor - two detector oscillation experiment at Krasnoyarsk underground site
The main physical goal of the project is to search with reactor antineutrinos
for small mixing angle oscillations in the atmospheric mass parameter region
around {\Delta}m^{2}_{atm} ~ 2.5 10^{-3} eV^2 in order to find the element
U_{e3} of the neutrino mixing matrix or to set a new more stringent constraint
(U_{e3} is the contribution of mass-3 state to the electron neutrino flavor
state). To achieve this we propose a "one reactor - two detector" experiment:
two identical antineutrino spectrometers with 50 ton liquid scintillator
targets located at ~100 m and ~1000 m from the Krasnoyarsk underground reactor
(~600 mwe). In no-oscillation case ratio of measured positron spectra of the
\bar{{\nu}_e} + p \to e^{+} + n reaction is energy independent. Deviation from
a constant value of this ratio is the oscillation signature. In this scheme
results do not depend on the exact knowledge of the reactor power, nu_e
spectra, burn up effects, target volumes and, which is important, the
backgrounds can periodically be measured during reactor OFF periods. In this
letter we present the Krasnoyarsk reactor site, give a schematic description of
the detectors, calculate the neutrino detection rates and estimate the
backgrounds. We also outline the detector monitoring and calibration
procedures, which are of a key importance. We hope that systematic
uncertainties will not accede 0.5% and the sensitivity U^{2}_{e3} ~4 10^{-3}
(at {\Delta}m^{2} = 2.5 10^{-3} eV^2) can be achieved.Comment: Latex 2e, 9 pages and 5 ps figure
Sensitivity and kinetics of signal transmission at the first visual synapse differentially impact visually-guided behavior
In the retina, synaptic transmission between photoreceptors and downstream ON-bipolar neurons (ON-BCs) is mediated by a GPCR pathway, which plays an essential role in vision. However, the mechanisms that control signal transmission at this synapse and its relevance to behavior remain poorly understood. In this study we used a genetic system to titrate the rate of GPCR signaling in ON-BC dendrites by varying the concentration of key RGS proteins and measuring the impact on transmission of signal between photoreceptors and ON-BC neurons using electroretinography and single cell recordings. We found that sensitivity, onset timing, and the maximal amplitude of light-evoked responses in rod- and cone-driven ON-BCs are determined by different RGS concentrations. We further show that changes in RGS concentration differentially impact visually guided-behavior mediated by rod and cone ON pathways. These findings illustrate that neuronal circuit properties can be modulated by adjusting parameters of GPCR-based neurotransmission at individual synapses
Subthreshold and near-threshold kaon and antikaon production in proton-nucleus reactions
The differential production cross sections of K^+ and K^- mesons have been
measured at the ITEP proton synchrotron in p+Be, p+Cu collisions under lab
angle of 10.5^0, respectively, at 1.7 and 2.25, 2.4 GeV beam energies. A
detailed comparison of these data with the results of calculations within an
appropriate folding model for incoherent primary proton-nucleon, secondary
pion-nucleon kaon and antikaon production processes and processes associated
with the creation of antikaons via the decay of intermediate phi mesons is
given. We show that the strangeness exchange process YN->NNK^- gives a small
contribution to the antikaon yield in the kinematics of the performed
experiment. We argue that in the case when antikaon production processes are
dominated by the channels with KK^- in the final state, the cross sections of
the corresponding reactions are weakly influenced by the in-medium kaon and
antikaon mean fields.Comment: 24 pages. accepted for publication at J.Phys.
A four gap glass RPC time-of-flight array with 90 ps time resolution
In this work we describe the performance of a prototype developped in the context of the ALICE team-of-flight R&D system. The detector module consists of a 32-channel array of 3 x 3 cm2 glass-RPC cells, each of which has four accurately spaced gaps of 0.3. mm thickness arranged as a pair of double-gap resistive plate chambers. Operated with a non-flammable gas mixture at atmospheric pressure, the system achieved a time resolution of 90 ps at 90% efficiency with good uniformity and moderate crosstalk. This result shows the feasibility of large-area, high resolution time-of-flight systems based on RPCs at affordable cost
