Role of the transverse field in inverse freezing in the fermionic Ising spin-glass model

We investigate the inverse freezing in the fermionic Ising spin-glass (FISG) model in a transverse field Γ\Gamma. The grand canonical potential is calculated in the static approximation, replica symmetry and one-step replica symmetry breaking Parisi scheme. It is argued that the average occupation per site nn is strongly affected by Γ\Gamma. As consequence, the boundary phase is modified and, therefore, the reentrance associated with the inverse freezing is modified too.Comment: 6 pages, 3 figures, accepted for publication in PR

Multicolor optical polarimetry of reddened stars in the small Magellanic cloud

    Get PDF
First results of an on-going program to determine the wavelength dependence of the interstellar optical polarization of reddened stars in the Small Magellanic Cloud (SMC) are presented. IUE observations of reddened stars in the SMC (Bouchet et al. 1985) generally show marked differences in the extinction law as compared to both the Galaxy and the Large Megallanic Cloud. The aim here is to determine the wavelength dependence of the optical linear polarization in the direction of several such stars in the SMC in order to further constrain the dust composition and size distribution in that galaxy

The mathematical theory of resonant transducers in a spherical gravity wave antenna

    Get PDF
The rigoruos mathematical theory of the coupling and response of a spherical gravitational wave detector endowed with a set of resonant transducers is presented and developed. A perturbative series in ascending powers of the square root of the ratio of the resonator to the sphere mass is seen to be the key to the solution of the problem. General layouts of arbitrary numbers of transducers can be assessed, and a specific proposal (PHC), alternative to the highly symmetric TIGA of Merkowitz and Johnson, is described in detail. Frequency spectra of the coupled system are seen to be theoretically recovered in full agreement with experimental determinations.Comment: 31 pages, 7 figures, LaTeX2e, \usepackage{graphicx,deleq

    Magnetic Field Tomography

Neutral atoms may be trapped via the interaction of their magnetic dipole moment with magnetic field gradients. One of the possible schemes is the cloverleaf trap. It is often desirable to have at hand a fast and precise technique for measuring the magnetic field distribution. We introduce a novel diagnostic tool for instantaneous imaging the equipotential lines of a magnetic field within a region of space (the vacuum recipient) that is not accessible to massive probes. Our technique is based on spatially resolved observation of the fluorescence emitted by a hot beam of sodium atoms crossing a thin slice of resonant laser light within the magnetic field region to be investigated. The inhomogeneous magnetic field spatially modulates the resonance condition between the Zeeman-shifted hyperfine sublevels and the laser light and therefore the amount of scattered photons. We demonstrate this technique by mapping the field of our cloverleaf trap in three dimensions under various conditions.Comment: 8 pages, 8 figure

Emergence of turbulence in an oscillating Bose-Einstein condensate

We report on the experimental observation of vortices tangle in an atomic BEC of Rb-87 atoms when an external oscillatory perturbation is introduced in the trap. The vortices tangle configuration is a signature of the presence of a turbulent regime in the cloud. We also show that this turbulent cloud has suppression of the aspect ratio inversion typically observed in quantum degenerate bosonic gases during free expansion. Instead, the cloud expands keeping the ratio between their axis constant. Turbulence in atomic superfluids may constitute an alternative system to investigate decay mechanisms as well as to test fundamental theoretical aspects in this field.Comment: accepted for Phys. Rev.
