Modelling sex-biased migration in the Pacific

In the Pacific, maternally-transmitted mtDNA shows restricted diversity compared to paternally-transmitted Y-chromosome DNA. These sex-specific differences have been attributed to a history of matrilocality, where in-marrying men bring greater genetic diversity to local communities, compared to women. TO TEST whether postmarital residence norms do in fact influence genetic variation given the recent colonization time, we compare the genetic variation of matrilocal and patrilocal Oceanic societies. Additionally, it has been hypothesized that there will be a time lag for a change in social structure to be reflected in genes. WE TEST this hypothesis by calculating the number of generations it takes for a switch in postmarital residence to be apparent in genetic diversity
