    First Order Calculation of the Inclusive Cross Section pp to ZZ by Graviton Exchange in Large Extra Dimensions

    We calculate the inclusive cross section of double Z-boson production within large extra dimensions at the Large Hadron Collider (LHC). Using perturbatively quantized gravity in the ADD model we perform a first order calculation of the graviton mediated contribution to the pp to ZZ cross section. At low energies (e.g. Tevatron) this additional contribution is very small, making it virtually unobservable, for a fundamental mass scale above 2500 GeV. At LHC energies however, the calculation indicates that the ZZ-production rate within the ADD model should differ significantly from the Standard Model if the new fundamental mass scale would be below 15000 GeV. A comparison with the observed production rate at the LHC might therefore provide direct hints on the number and structure of the extra dimensions.Comment: 7 pages, 7 figures, accepted for publication in Phys.     Target tracking with composite linear filters on noisy scenes

    A tracking system using a bank of adaptive linear filters is proposed. Tracking is carried out by means of multiple target detections. The linear filters are designed from multiple views of a target using synthetic discriminant functions. For each view an optimum filter is derived from noisy reference image and disjoint background model. An iterative algorithm is used to improve the performance of the synthesized filters. The number of filters in the bank can be controlled to guarantee a prescribed tracking accuracy. Computer simulation results show that the proposed algorithm is able to precisely track a target.This work was supported the Russian Science Foundation grant β„–15-19-10010

    The present paper involves comprehensive investigations towards an understanding on how aggressive environments, high service temperatures and long dwell times affect damage growth and lifetime reduction of different components of automotive combustion engines and aero-engines made out of gamma titanium aluminides with protective coatings.     Impulsive noise removal from color images with morphological filtering

    This paper deals with impulse noise removal from color images. The proposed noise removal algorithm employs a novel approach with morphological filtering for color image denoising; that is, detection of corrupted pixels and removal of the detected noise by means of morphological filtering. With the help of computer simulation we show that the proposed algorithm can effectively remove impulse noise.     Texture and shape of two-dimensional domains of nematic liquid crystal

    We present a generalized approach to compute the shape and internal structure of two-dimensional nematic domains. By using conformal mappings, we are able to compute the director field for a given domain shape that we choose from a rich class, which includes drops with large and small aspect ratios, and sharp domain tips as well as smooth ones. Results are assembled in a phase diagram that for given domain size, surface tension, anchoring strength, and elastic constant shows the transitions from a homogeneous to a bipolar director field, from circular to elongated droplets, and from sharp to smooth domain tips. We find a previously unaccounted regime, where the drop is nearly circular, the director field bipolar and the tip rounded. We also find that bicircular director fields, with foci that lie outside the domain, provide a remarkably accurate description of the optimal director field for a large range of values of the various shape parameters.Comment: 12 pages, 10 figure

    Benchmark creep tests for thermal barrier coatings

    The topic of this paper involves a number of benchmark creep tests and reference solutions that give the possibility to verify the finite element analysis of stress redistribution in thermal barrier coatings related to commercial software packages. The numerical results have been compared in the benchmark tests with the results obtained by other methods and by other authors. The results of creep studies revealed the magnitudes of the local stresses that correlate with the residual stresses determined in the thermally grown oxide by the luminescence spectroscopy method. The creep properties of Ni-based superalloy substrate have strong influence on the stress state and subsequent failure of EB-PVD thermal barrier coatings.
