    Endoscopic removal of intrauterine contraceptive device embedded into detrusor muscle of urinary bladder: our experience of two cases

    Migration of intrauterine contraceptive device (IUD) into urinary bladder is a rare event, presenting as irritative lower urinary tract symptoms; we present two cases of migrated IUD into urinary bladder and embedded inside the detrusor muscle of bladder. Both patients were assessed by ultrasonography and computed tomography. Both patients were successfully treated by endoscopic approach via per urethral route. One patient was having embedded vertical arm of IUD which was pulled using forceps and second patient was having embedded horizontal arm of IUD in detrusor muscle which was treated by taking mucosal incision with help of Collin’s knife followed by pulling IUD with help of forceps. There was no evidence of fistula or any other complication. We would like to conclude that endoscopic removal of IUD embedded into detrusor muscle is safe, feasible alternative to open surgery without any further risk of fistula formation

    Laparoscopic excision of mesenteric cyst of sigmoid mesocolon

    Mesenteric cysts are rare abdominal tumours. They are found in the mesentery of small bowel (66%) and mesentery of large intestine (33%), usually in the right colon. Very few cases have been reported of tumours found in mesentery of descending colon, sigmoid or rectum. Mesenteric cysts do not show classical clinical findings and are detected incidentally during imaging due to absent or non-specific clinical presentation or during management of one of their complications. Ultrasonography (USG)/computed tomography (CT)/ magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) are used in diagnosing mesenteric cyst but they cannot determine the origin of cyst. Laparoscopy not only helps in diagnosing the site and origin of the mesenteric cyst but also has a therapeutic role. Laparoscopic treatment of mesenteric cyst is a safe, preferred method of treatment and is a less-invasive surgical technique.     CFD simulation of mixing in tall gas-liquid stirred vessel: role of local flow patterns

    In this work, we have used the computational fluid dynamics (CFD)-based models to investigate the gas-liquid flows generated by three down-pumping pitched blade turbines. A two-fluid model along with the standard k-ε turbulence model was used to simulate the dispersed gas-liquid flow in a stirred vessel. Appropriate drag corrections to account for bulk turbulence [Khopkar and Ranade, 2005. CFD simulation of gas-liquid flow in a stirred vessel: VC, S33 and L33 flow regimes. A.I.Ch.E. Journal, accepted for publication] were developed to correctly simulate different flow regimes. The computational snapshot approach was used to simulate impeller rotation and was implemented in the commercial CFD code, FLUENT4.5 (of Fluent. Inc., USA). The computational model has successfully captured the flow regimes as observed during experiments. The particle trajectory simulations were then carried out to examine the influence of the different flow regimes on the circulation time distribution. The model predictions were verified by comparing the predicted results with the experimental data of [Shewale and Pandit, 2006. Studies in multiple impeller agitated gas-liquid contactors.     Computational fluid dynamics simulation of the solid suspension in a stirred slurry reactor

    A comprehensive computational fluid dynamics CFD model was developed in the present study to gain insight into the solid suspension in a stirred slurry reactor. The preliminary simulations highlighted the need for the correct modeling of the interphase drag force. A two-dimensional model problem was then developed using CFD to understand the influence of free stream turbulence on the particle drag coefficient. The proposed correlation was then incorporated in a two-fluid model (Euler-Euler) along with the standard k-ε turbulence model with mixture properties to simulate the turbulent solid-liquid flow in a stirred reactor. A multiple reference frame approach was used to simulate the impeller rotation in a fully baffled reactor. A computational model was mapped on to a commercial CFD solver FLUENT6.2 (of Fluent Inc., USA). The model predictions were compared with the published experimental data of Yamazaki et al. [Powder Technol. 1986, 48, 205] and Godfrey and Zhu [AIChE Symp. Ser. 1994, 299, 181]. The predicted results show reasonably good agreement with the experimental data. The computational model and results discussed in this work would be useful for extending the applications of CFD models for simulating large stirred slurry reactors

    Orthodontic management of an impacted maxillary incisor due to odontoma

    Odontomas are a heterogeneous group of jaw bone lesions, classified as odontogenic tumors which usually include well-diversified dental tissues. Odontomas are the most common type of odontogenic tumors and generally they are asymptomatic. Two types of odontomas are described: compound and complex based on either the appearance of well-organized tooth-like structures (compound odontomas) or on a mass of disorganized odontogenic tissues (complex odontomas). Compound odontomas have a predilection for the anterior maxilla, whereas complex odontomas have a predilection for the posterior mandible. Odontomas frequently interfere with eruption of teeth leading to their impaction. This is a case report of a 14-year-old girl with an unerupted maxillary right central incisor due to a complex composite odontoma a rare occurrence in anterior maxilla. Surgical excision of the odontoma and orthodontic treatment to get the impacted maxillary right central incisor into alignment is discussed
