    Substrate-independent method for growing and modulating the density of polymer brushes from surfaces by ATRP

    Published: April 19, 2012We describe a method for grafting PEG-based polymer chains of variable surface density using a substrate independent approach, allowing grafting from virtually any material substrate. The approach relies upon initial coupling of a macroinitiator to plasma polymer treated surfaces. The macroinitiator is a novel random terpolymer containing ATRP initiator residues, strongly negatively charged groups, and carboxylic acid moieties that facilitate covalent surface anchoring. Surface-initiated ATRP (SI-ATRP) using polyethylene glycol methyl ether methacrylate (PEGMA) at different concentrations led to grafted surfaces of controlled thickness in either the “brush” or “mushroom” morphology, which was controlled by the abundance of initiator residues in the macroinitiator. Grafted polymer layer structure was investigated via direct interaction force measurements using colloid probe atomic force microscopy (AFM). Equilibrium, hydrated graft layer thicknesses inferred from the highly repulsive AFM force data suggest that the polymer brush graft layer contained polymer chains which were fully stretched. Since the degree of stretching resulted in layer thicknesses approaching the polymer contour length, the polymer brushes studied must be very close to maximum graft density. Grafted layers where the polymer molecules were in the mushroom regime resulted in much thinner layers but the chains had greater chain entropic freedom as indicated by strongly attractive bridging interactions between tethered chains and the silica colloid probe. Use of this experimental methodology would be suitable for preparing grafted polymer layers of a preferred density free from substrate-specific linking chemistries.Bryan R.     Measurement of e+eγχcJe^+e^- \to \gamma\chi_{cJ} via initial state radiation at Belle

    The process e+eγχcJe^+e^- \to \gamma\chi_{cJ} (JJ=1, 2) is studied via initial state radiation using 980 fb1^{-1} of data at and around the Υ(nS)\Upsilon(nS) (nn=1, 2, 3, 4, 5) resonances collected with the Belle detector at the KEKB asymmetric-energy e+ee^+e^- collider. No significant signal is observed except from ψ(2S)\psi(2S) decays. Upper limits on the cross sections between s=3.80\sqrt{s}=3.80 and 5.56 GeV5.56~{\rm GeV} are determined at the 90% credibility level, which range from few pb to a few tens of pb. We also set upper limits on the decay rate of the vector charmonium [ψ(4040\psi(4040), ψ(4160)\psi(4160), and ψ(4415)\psi(4415)] and charmoniumlike [Y(4260)Y(4260), Y(4360)Y(4360), and Y(4660)Y(4660)] states to γχcJ\gamma\chi_{cJ}.Comment: Accepted by PR

    Studies of charmed strange baryons in the ΛD\Lambda D final state at Belle

    We report the discovery of Ξc(3055)0\Xi_{c}(3055)^{0}, observed by its decay into the final state ΛD0\Lambda D^{0}, and present the first observation and evidence of the decays of Ξc(3055)+\Xi_c(3055)^{+} and Ξc(3080)+\Xi_c(3080)^{+} into ΛD+\Lambda D^{+}. We also perform a combined analysis of the ΛD+\Lambda D^{+} with the Σc++K\Sigma_{c}^{++}K^{-} and Σc++K\Sigma_{c}^{\ast ++}K^{-} decay modes to measure the ratios of branching fractions, masses and widths with improved accuracy. We measure the ratios of branching fractions B(Ξc(3055)+ΛD+)/B(Ξc(3055)+Σc++K)=5.09±1.01±0.76{\cal B}(\Xi_{c}(3055)^{+} \to \Lambda D^{+})/{\cal B}(\Xi_{c}(3055)^{+} \to \Sigma_{c}^{++}K^{-})=5.09\pm1.01\pm0.76, B(Ξc(3080)+ΛD+)/B(Ξc(3080)+Σc++K)=1.29±0.30±0.15{\cal B}(\Xi_{c}(3080)^{+} \to \Lambda D^{+})/{\cal B}(\Xi_{c}(3080)^{+} \to \Sigma_{c}^{++}K^{-})=1.29\pm0.30\pm0.15, and B(Ξc(3080)+Σc++K)/B(Ξc(3080)+Σc++K)=1.07±0.27±0.01{\cal B}(\Xi_{c}(3080)^{+} \to \Sigma_{c}^{\ast ++}K^{-})/{\cal B}(\Xi_{c}(3080)^{+} \to \Sigma_{c}^{++}K^{-})=1.07\pm0.27\pm0.01, where the uncertainties are statistical and systematic. The analysis is performed using a 980 fb1^{-1} data sample collected with the Belle detector at the KEKB asymmetric-energy e+ee^{+}e^{-} collider.Comment: Submitted to PR

    Study of π0\pi^0 pair production in single-tag two-photon collisions

    We report a measurement of the differential cross section of π0\pi^0 pair production in single-tag two-photon collisions, γγπ0π0\gamma^* \gamma \to \pi^0 \pi^0, in e+ee^+ e^- scattering. The cross section is measured for Q2Q^2 up to 30 GeV2^2, where Q2Q^2 is the negative of the invariant mass squared of the tagged photon, in the kinematic range 0.5 GeV < W < 2.1 GeV and cosθ|\cos \theta^*| < 1.0 for the total energy and pion scattering angle, respectively, in the γγ\gamma^* \gamma center-of-mass system. The results are based on a data sample of 759 fb1^{-1} collected with the Belle detector at the KEKB asymmetric-energy e+ee^+ e^- collider. The transition form factor of the f0(980)f_0(980) and that of the f2(1270)f_2(1270) with the helicity-0, -1, and -2 components separately are measured for the first time and are compared with theoretical calculations.Comment: 36 pages, 37 figures, 11 tables, Belle Preprint 2015-15, KEK Preprint 2015-2

    Semi-inclusive studies of semileptonic BsB_s decays at Belle

    We present an analysis of the semi-inclusive decays BsDsX+νB_s \to D_s^- X \ell^+ \nu and BsDsX+νB_s \to D_s^{*-} X \ell^+ \nu, where XX denotes a final state that may consist of additional hadrons or photons and \ell is an electron or muon. The studied BsB_s decays are contained in the 121.4 fb1121.4~{\rm fb}^{-1} Υ(5S)\Upsilon(5S) data sample collected by the Belle detector at the KEKB asymmetric-energy e+ee^+e^- collider. The branching fractions of the decays are measured to be B(BsDsX+ν)=[8.2±0.2(stat)±0.6(syst)±1.4(ext)]%\mathcal{B}(B_s \to D_s^- X \ell^+ \nu) = [8.2 \pm 0.2 (\text{stat}) \pm 0.6 (\text{syst}) \pm 1.4 (\text{ext})]\% and B(BsDsX+ν)=[5.4±0.4(stat)±0.4(syst)±0.9(ext)]%\mathcal{B}(B_s \to D_s^{*-} X \ell^+ \nu) = [5.4 \pm 0.4 (\text{stat}) \pm 0.4 (\text{syst}) \pm 0.9 (\text{ext})]\%, where the first two uncertainties are statistical and systematic and the last is due to external parameters. The measurement also provides an estimate of the Bs()Bˉs()B_s^{(*)}\bar{B}_s^{(*)} production cross-section, σ(e+eBs()Bˉs())=(53.8±1.4(stat)±4.0(syst)±3.4(ext))pb\sigma(e^+e^- \to B_s^{(*)}\bar{B}_s^{(*)}) = (53.8 \pm 1.4 (\text{stat}) \pm 4.0 (\text{syst}) \pm 3.4 (\text{ext}))\,{\rm pb}, at the center-of-mass energy s=10.86GeV\sqrt{s} = 10.86\,{\rm GeV}.Comment: 13 pages, 2 figures, submitted to Phys.     Observation of B0pΛˉD()B^{0} \rightarrow p\bar{\Lambda} D^{(*)-}

    We report the first observation of the decays B0pΛˉD()B^0 \rightarrow p\bar{\Lambda} D^{(*)-}. The data sample of 711711 fb1^{-1} used in this analysis corresponds to 772772 million BBˉB\bar{B} pairs, collected at the Υ(4S)\Upsilon(4S) resonance by the Belle detector at the KEKB asymmetric-energy e+ee^{+}e^{-} collider. We observe 19.8σ19.8\sigma and 10.8σ10.8\sigma excesses of events for the two decay modes and measure the branching fractions of B0pΛˉDB^0 \rightarrow p\bar{\Lambda} D^{-} and B0pΛˉDB^0 \rightarrow p\bar{\Lambda} D^{*-} to be (25.1±2.6±3.5)×106(25.1\pm2.6\pm3.5)\times10^{-6} and (33.6±6.3±4.4)×106(33.6\pm6.3\pm4.4)\times10^{-6}, respectively, where the first uncertainties are statistical and the second are systematic. These results are not compatible with the predictions based on the generalized factorization approach. In addition, a threshold enhancement in the di-baryon (pΛˉp\bar{\Lambda}) system is observed, consistent with that observed in similar BB decays.Comment: 16 pages, 3 figures and 3 tables, submitted to PR

    Search for B+ -> l+ nu gamma decays with hadronic tagging using the full Belle data sample

    We search for the decay B+ -> l+ nu gamma with l+ = e+ or mu+ using the full Belle data set of 772 x 10^6 BBbar pairs, collected at the Y(4S) resonance with the Belle detector at the KEKB asymmetric-energy e+e- collider. We reconstruct one B meson in a hadronic decay mode and search for the B+ -> l+ nu gamma decay in the remainder of the event. We observe no significant signal within the phase space of E_gamma^sig > 1 GeV and obtain upper limits of BR(B+ -> e+ nu gamma) mu+ nu gamma) l+ nu gamma) < 3.5 x 10^-6 at 90 % credibility level.Comment: Submitted to Phys.     Evidence for the decay B0->eta pi^0

    We report a search for the charmless hadronic decay B0ηπ0B^0\to\eta \pi^0 with a data sample corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 694 fb1\rm fb^{-1} containing 753×106753\times10^6 BBˉB\bar{B} pairs. The data were collected by the Belle experiment running on the Υ(4S)\Upsilon(4S) resonance at the KEKB e+ee^+e^- collider. We measure a branching fraction B(B0ηπ0)=(4.11.50.7+1.7+0.5)×107\mathcal{B}(B^0\to\eta\pi^0)=(4.1^{+1.7+0.5}_{-1.5-0.7})\times 10^{-7}, where the first uncertainty is statistical and the second is systematic. Our measurement gives an upper limit of B(B0ηπ0)<6.5×107\mathcal{B}(B^0\to\eta\pi^0)<6.5\times 10^{-7} at 90\% confidence level. The signal has a significance of 3.03.0 standard deviations and constitutes the first evidence for this decay mode.Comment: 11 pages, 3 figures, 2 tables, submitted to Physical Review D(R
