    Detection of humidity-treated aged latent prints using cyanoacrylate fuming and a reflected ultraviolet imaging system (RUVIS)

    For the past several decades, challenges in the detection and collection of latent prints exposed to harsh environmental conditions have inspired research in pretreatment methods prior to the application of chemical, physical, or optical-based enhancement techniques. Some of the difficulties associated with processing degraded latent prints are attributed to dehydration, alterations in chemical composition, and physical disturbance of ridge detail. This study seeks to investigate the effectiveness of humidity, cyanoacrylate fuming method (CFM), and a reflected ultraviolet imaging system (RUVIS) on the detection and collection of aged latent palmprints. Prints were exposed to air flow and ultraviolet (UV) light for a period of 0 to 28 days, and subsequently treated with either cool or warm humidity and CFM. RUVIS was then utilized to detect and capture friction ridge detail after each treatment step. Improvements in RUVIS detection between treatments were evaluated based on four response factors: minutiae count, percent print recovery, ridge thickness and contrast. By measuring these factors, each latent print photograph was able to be converted to quantifiable data to facilitate statistical analysis of potential differences or improvements between treatments. The results demonstrate that the application of 80% relative humidity successfully revived aged latent palmprints across all factors. The combined effect of humidity followed v by CFM treatment and RUVIS detection was greatest for minutiae count and ridge thickness, while percent print recovery and contrast demonstrated more modest improvements when compared to control prints. Additionally, cool temperature treatments outperformed warm temperature treatments across all factors except contrast. The data therefore suggest that to achieve print rejuvenation and overall improvements in RUVIS detection, combined cool humidity and CFM is more effective than humidity alone. The data also indicate a potential correlation between temperature treatments and latent print age. Warm humidity combined with CFM appeared to best enhance RUVIS images on fresher prints of a few days to one week old, while cool humidity and CFM appeared to maximally enhance RUVIS images on prints of several weeks old

    Do Calories Count? Examining the Impact of Calorie Awareness on Food Selection

    This study examined whether purchasing behavior of patrons in a college campus café changed when calorie information was provided. It compared weekly sales on food items before and after calorie information was posted for a group of target items (n = 6) that had calorie counts posted in fall 2017 and two groups of comparison items. Archival sales data were collected using the existing point-of-sale system. Sales of target items, which had calories displayed next to them, dropped significantly when compared with sales of the same items during the previous year. Sales of target items also dropped significantly when compared with sales of items matched either on food type or average sales in the year before posting calorie information. Findings indicate that posting calorie information had a significant effect on sales of items for which calorie information is displayed. Interestingly, most (80%) of the patrons of the café reported they were unaware of the calorie postings. Future research may focus on the impact of posting calorie information on the behavior of specific populations, settings, and formats. The addition of contextual information such as recommended daily caloric intake may provide additional perspective

    Differing Impact Levels from Risk Factors on Virtual and Co-Located Software Development Projects

    Although software development projects increasingly incorporate virtual team members they still fall prey to risks which produce challenges as do co-located projects. Most research performed on project risk was conducted on projects using traditional co-located team members. This paper reports on the results of a survey of over 150 Information Technology (IT) practitioners. One goal of the survey was to identify differences in the degree of impact between risk factors on virtual software projects and those on co-located software projects. Out of fifty-five surveyed risk factors, seven risk factors showed significant differences in impact on the successful completion of projects in these two types of project environments. Additionally, the results showed a greater impact for each of the seven risk factors on virtual rather than co-located software projects. These results can be useful to practitioners who are managing in a virtual environment and need to correctly identify potential risks

    Audit Committee Financial Expertise, Competing Corporate Governance Mechanisms, and Earnings Management

    A prime objective of the Sarbanes-Oxley Act and recent changes to stock exchange listing standards is to improve the quality of financial reporting. We examine the associations between audit committee financial expertise and alternate corporate governance mechanisms and earnings management. We find that both accounting and certain types of non-accounting financial expertise reduce earnings management for firms with weak alternate corporate governance mechanisms, but that independent audit committee members with financial expertise are most effective in mitigating earnings management. Importantly we find that alternate corporate governance mechanisms are an effective substitute for audit committee financial expertise in constraining earnings management. Finally, we find either no association or a positive association between financial expertise and real earnings management. Our results suggest that alternate governance approaches are equally effective in improving the quality of financial reporting, and that firms should have the flexibility to design the particular set of governance mechanisms that best fit their unique situations

    The Acute and Residual Effect of a Single Exercise Session on Meal Glucose Tolerance in Sedentary Young Adults

    The study goals were to (1) establish the variability in postprandial glucose control in healthy young people consuming a mixed meal and, then (2) determine the acute and residual impact of a single exercise bout on postprandial glucose control. In study 1, 18 people completed two similar mixed meal trials and an intravenous glucose tolerance test (IVGTT). There were strong test-retest correlations for the post-meal area under the curve (AUC) for glucose, insulin, and Cpeptide (r = 0.73–0.83) and the Matsuda insulin sensitivity index (ISI, r = 0.76), and between meal and IVGTT-derived ISI (r = 0.83). In study 2, 11 untrained young adults completed 3 trials. One trial (No Ex) was completed after refraining from vigorous activity for ≥3 days. On the other 2 trials, a 45-min aerobic exercise bout was performed either 17-hours (Prior Day Ex) or 1-hour (Same Day Ex) before consuming the test meal. Compared to No Ex and Prior Day Ex, which did not differ from one another, there were lower AUCs on the Same Day Ex trial for glucose (6%), insulin (20%) and C-peptide (14%). Thus, a single moderate intensity exercise session can acutely improve glycemic control but the effect is modest and short-lived

    Incorporating Science into the Environmental Policy Process: a Case Study from Washington State

    The incorporation of science into environmental policy is a key concern at many levels of decision making. Various institutions have sought to standardize the protection of natural resources by requiring that decisions be made based on the best available science. Here we present empirical data describing the incorporation of best available science in the land-use policy process on a local scale. Results are based on interviews with planners and others who conducted scientific reviews associated with a Washington State Growth Management Act amendment that requires the inclusion of best available science in protecting critical areas. Our results show that jurisdictions varied with respect to how they included science in their land-use policies. Specifically, we found that smaller jurisdictions were very reliant on scientific information provided by state agencies, communicated frequently with other jurisdictions and agencies, and most often let scientific information guide the policy development process. Medium-sized jurisdictions, in contrast, were more inwardly focused, relied predominantly on local information, communicated little with outsiders, and more often looked to political influences to guide the policy process. Large jurisdictions, including most counties, often generated their own best science, communicated with and often informed state agencies and other jurisdictions, and more often considered science first during the policy development process. Jurisdictions also differed in terms of how best available science was defined, and how jurisdictions dealt with conflicting scientific information. Our results provide empirical evidence of the variation with which best available science is used in environmental policies

    RNA interference in marine and freshwater sponges

    Background: The marine sponge Tethya wilhelma and the freshwater sponge Ephydatia muelleri are emerging model organisms to study evolution, gene regulation, development, and physiology in non-bilaterian animal systems. Thus far, functional methods (i.e., loss or gain of function) for these organisms have not been available. Results: We show that soaking developing freshwater sponges in double-stranded RNA and/or feeding marine and freshwater sponges bacteria expressing double-stranded RNA can lead to RNA interference and reduction of targeted transcript levels. These methods, first utilized in C. elegans, have been adapted for the development and feeding style of easily cultured marine and freshwater poriferans. We demonstrate phenotypic changes result from ‘knocking down’ expression of the actin gene. Conclusion: This technique provides an easy, efficient loss-of-function manipulation for developmental and gene regulatory studies in these important non-bilaterian animals

    Forkhead box F2 Regulation of Platelet-Derived Growth Factor and myocardin/Serum Response Factor Signaling is Essential for Intestinal Development

    Alterations in the forkhead box F2 gene expression have been reported in numerous pathologies, and Foxf2−/− mice are perinatal lethal with multiple malformations; however, molecular mechanisms pertaining to Foxf2 signaling are severely lacking. In this study, Foxf2 requirements in murine smooth muscle cells were examined using a conditional knock-out approach. We generated novel Foxf2-floxed mice, which we bred to smMHC-Cre-eGFP mice to generate a mouse line with Foxf2 deleted specifically from smooth muscle. These mice exhibited growth retardation due to reduced intestinal length as well as inflammation and remodeling of the small intestine. Colons of Tg(smMHC-Cre-eGFP+/−);Foxf2−/− mice had expansion of the myenteric nerve plexus and increased proliferation of smooth muscle cells leading to thickening of the longitudinal smooth muscle layer. Foxf2 deficiency in colonic smooth muscle was associated with increased expression of Foxf1, PDGFa, PDGFb, PDGF receptor α, and myocardin. FOXF2 bound to promoter regions of these genes indicating direct transcriptional regulation. Foxf2 repressed Foxf1 promoter activity in co-transfection experiments. We also show that knockdown of Foxf2 in colonic smooth muscle cells in vitro and in transgenic mice increased myocardin/serum response factor signaling and increased expression of contractile proteins. Foxf2 attenuated myocardin/serum response factor signaling in smooth muscle cells through direct binding to the N-terminal region of myocardin. Our results indicate that Foxf2 signaling in smooth muscle cells is essential for intestinal development and serum response factor signaling
