This paper examines the period from the late 1930s to the breakdown of diplomatic relations between the Egyptian and ROC governments in 1956 using the Kuomintang’s (KMT’s) official newspaper, the Central Daily News. Changes in the media coverage of diplomatic relations between Egypt and the ROC government were analyzed. The analysis was of the period after the establishment of the Egyptian consulate in Cairo in 1934 to after the ROC government’s transfer of power from the mainland to Taiwan in 1949. The report also analyzed the Central Daily News coverage of the ROC government’s cessation of diplomatic relations with Egypt, comparing it with other newspapers. During the severance of diplomatic relations between the ROC government and Egypt in 1956, the Central Daily News did not urge the ROC government to reconsider its foreign policy before the rupture or report on the imminent threat of a split, unlike other privately owned newspapers. This study concludes that this was a sign of the ROC government’s defensive stance in its policy toward Egypt. Moreover, the newspaper intended to avoid provoking public criticism in Taiwan by withholding unnecessary information from the public

Changes in airway dimensions can occur during general anaesthesia and surgery for a variety of reasons. This study explored factors associated with postoperative changes in airway dimensions. Patient airway volume was measured by acoustic reflectometory and neck muscle diameter by ultrasound echography in the pre- and post-anaesthetic periods in a total of 281 patients. Neck circumference was also assessed during these periods. A significant decrease in median (IQR [range]) total airway volume (from 63.8 (51.8–75.7 [14.7–103]) ml to 45.9 (33.5–57.2 [6.4–96.3]) ml, p < 0.0001), and a significant increase in muscle diameter (from 4.3 (3.3–5.6 [2.2–9.0]) mm to 5.8 (4.7–7.3 [2.8–1.3]) mm, p < 0.0001) and neck circumference (from 34.0 (32.5–37.0 [29.5–49.0]) cm to 35.0 (33.5–38.0 [30.5–50.5]) cm, p < 0.0001) were observed. It may be possible that changes in airway volume and neck circumference were influenced by surgical duration or peri-operative fluid management (ρ) = −0.31 (95% CI −0.24 to −0.01), p = 0.0301, −0.17 (−0.23 to −0.06), p = 0.0038, 0.23 (0.12–0.34), p < 0.0001, and 0.16 (0.05–0.27), p = 0.0062, respectively). The intra-oral space can significantly decrease and neck thickness increase after general anaesthesia, and might increase the risk of difficult laryngoscopy and intubation if airway management is required after extubation following general anaesthesia.博士(医学)・甲第626号・平成27年3月16日Copyright © 1999-2015 John Wiley & Sons, Inc. Isospin Breaking in B -> K^* gamma Decays

A calculation of the leading isospin-breaking contributions to the B -> K^* gamma decay amplitudes based on the QCD factorization approach is presented. They arise at order Lambda/m_b in the heavy-quark expansion and are due to annihilation contributions from 4-quark operators, the chromo-magnetic dipole operator, and charm penguins. In the Standard Model the decay rate for B^0 -> K^{*0} gamma is predicted to be about 10-20 % larger than that for B^- -> K^{*-} gamma. Isospin-breaking effects are a sensitive probe of the penguin sector of the effective weak Hamiltonian. New Physics models in which the hierarchy of B -> K^* gamma decay rates is either flipped or greatly enhanced could be ruled out with more precise data.Comment: 11 pages, 2 figures. Extended version to appear in Physics Letters B. Includes an additional section with a discussion of New Physics effect

Risk and Protective Factors of Micronesian Youth in Hawai\u27i: An Exploratory Study

    Get PDF
This exploratory, qualitative study examined the risk and protective factors of Micronesian middle and high school students in Hawai\u27i. Forty one Micronesian youth participated in 9 focus groups that explored their experiences within their schools, families, and communities. The findings describe youths\u27 experiences of ecological stress beginning with their migration to Hawai\u27i, and the potential outcomes of this stress (e.g., fighting, gangs, and drug use). Cultural buffers, such as traditional practices and culturally specific prevention programs, were described as aspects that prevented adverse outcomes. Implications for prevention practice are discussed
