Studies on pollinator fauna and their relative abundance of sunflower (Helianthus annuus L.) at Pantnagar, Uttarakhand, India
Pollinators provide key services to both natural and agricultural ecosystems. Agricultural productivity depends, in part on pollinator populations from adjacent semi natural habitats.The diversity and abundance of different insect visitors on sunflower (Helianthus annuus L.) were studied at Pantnagar. A total of 12 insect visitors belonging to order Hymenoptera (9), Diptera (1), Lepidoptera (1), and Coleoptera (1) were observed visiting the blossom of sunflower. The abundance (percentage of insect/m2/2min.) of Hymenopterans were maximum (86.09%) followed by the Dipterans (22.80 %) and others (3.87%). In Hymenopterans, the honeybees (Apis bees) were observed maximum (65.22 %) followed by non Apis bees (20.39 %) and the scolid wasp (1.69 %)
Joint measurability, steering and entropic uncertainty
The notion of incompatibility of measurements in quantum theory is in stark
contrast with the corresponding classical perspective, where all physical
observables are jointly measurable. It is of interest to examine if the results
of two or more measurements in the quantum scenario can be perceived from a
classical point of view or they still exhibit non-classical features. Clearly,
commuting observables can be measured jointly using projective measurements and
their statistical outcomes can be discerned classically. However, such simple
minded association of compatibility of measurements with commutativity turns
out to be limited in an extended framework, where the usual notion of sharp
projective valued measurements of self adjoint observables gets broadened to
include unsharp measurements of generalized observables constituting positive
operator valued measures (POVM). There is a surge of research activity recently
towards gaining new physical insights on the emergence of classical behavior
via joint measurability of unsharp observables. Here, we explore the entropic
uncertainty relation for a pair of discrete observables (of Alice's system)
when an entangled quantum memory of Bob is restricted to record outcomes of
jointly measurable POVMs only. Within the joint measurability regime, the sum
of entropies associated with Alice's measurement outcomes - conditioned by the
results registered at Bob's end - are constrained to obey an entropic steering
inequality. In this case, Bob's non-steerability reflects itself as his
inability in predicting the outcomes of Alice's pair of non-commuting
observables with better precision, even when they share an entangled state. As
a further consequence, the quantum advantage envisaged for the construction of
security proofs in key distribution is lost, when Bob's measurements are

Exploration of various flours as pollen substitutes for Apis mellifera L. during Dearth period at Tarai region of Uttarakhand, India
Studies on evaluation of various flours as pollen substitutes and availability of pollen resources for Apis mellifera honey bees were conducted at Govind Ballabh Pant University of Agriculture & Technology, Pantnagar, India during 2010. Four flours were taken viz. Soybean, Maize, Wheat and Gram as pollen substitutes for A. mellifera. All the flours were mixed with honey and water to make a total of 4 treatments (4 flours + honey + water). Treatment T1 (Soybean flour + honey + water) were found to be best in reference to visitation of bees with a mean number of 32.59 honey bee foragers /5min/day and weight loss in flours was 19.12 g due to foraging by bees followed by the treatment T3 (Maize flour + honey + water) and T2 (Wheat flour + honey + water) were found 29.30 and 23.05, respectively. Gram flour + honey + water (T4) combination were found to be least preferred pollen substitute for A. mellifera (19.76 honey bee foragers/5min/day) with a weight loss 6.66 g. The overall study has great significance for bee keepers. The use of pollen substitute is important for growth and development of the bee colonies not only in dearth periods but also at other times (during foraging, pollination process and to overcome pesticide exposures.).
