    A Practical Report : The Reading of A Christmas Carol

    This article is not a scholarly paper but a practical report of a literary classwork of the Faculty of Foreign Language Studies in Kansai University. In the classroom work, the author of this article takes up A Christmas Carol written by Charles Dickens (1812-70) , a British novelist. The reading of A Christmas Carol in the class needs to be approached from the linguistic and literary standpoints to the reading comprehension. The reason why the author adopts classic works like Dickens\u27 A Christmas Carol is because the classic literature seems to contain universal truth beyond time and space. The author of this report entertains the belief that the students\u27 literary achievements can be the wisdom for living after their graduating from Kansai University. Translating English into Japanese and also learning the history, culture, thought, and customs of the 19th century Victorian period will surely help the students to be healthy and strong in any environment they may find themselves in after their finishing at Kansai University. Being confident that this type of research should be highly prized, the author of this article will promote the love of literary learning in the class

    A Consideration on Studies of English Literature in Japan

    This paper attempts to formulate the significance of English literary studies in present-day Japan, and to carve out new horizons of them. First, a rapid survey of the present academic situation in Japan is instituted. Then, we examine closely and verify an English literature specialist’s statements made in his book during the Second World War. This analysis proves that he makes a succinct statement of his position, and that he tries to behave as a socially responsible individual. We can see a forward-looking attitude there. His methodology of English literary studies is based on an actionoriented, or a life-centered ideology, which has been lost in the branch of learning in Japan today. Literature stimulates both the intellect and the senses. Good literature teaches us ways of understanding the world. But we cannot fully appreciate English literature unless we understand the language. In this way, English-language teaching is essential. This paper proposes that the researchers in Japan who devote themselves to English literature should think of a more appropriate way to plow back into society.     Kenichi Yoshida and English Literature

    This paper attempts to examine closely and verify demonstratively an overall image ofKenichi Yoshida (1912-1977), a man of letters in Japan, especially in order to clarify and define his profile as a scholar of English literature. By going back and reviewing Yoshida’s literary statements and also looking at the remarks of the persons concerned, we will be able to know Yoshida’s doctrine of English literary studies in Japan, that is to say, his life-centered ideology, which has been lost in the branch of English literature in Japan today, and then to see forward-looking attitudes and methods in the studies of English literature in Japan. It will be worth noting that there are no treasures more precious than Yoshida’s literary works. Kenichi Yoshida tells us that the present researchers in Japan who devote themselves to English literature should think of a more appropriate and prolific way to plow back into society
