Nonadditivity effects in classical capacities of quantum multiple-access channels
We study classical capacities of quantum multi-access channels in geometric
terms revealing breaking of additivity of Holevo-like capacity. This effect is
purely quantum since, as one points out, any classical multi-access channels
have their regions additive. The observed non-additivity in quantum version
presented here seems to be the first effect of this type with no additional
resources like side classical or quantum information (or entanglement)
involved. The simplicity of quantum channels involved resembles butterfly
effect in case of classical channel with two senders and two receivers.Comment: 5 pages, 5 figure
Incommensurate state in a quasi-one-dimensional bond-alternating antiferromagnet with frustration in magnetic fields
We investigate the critical properties of the bond-alternating spin
chain with a next-nearest-neighbor interaction in magnetic fields. By the
numerical calculation and the exact solution based on the effective
Hamiltonian, we show that there is a parameter region where the longitudinal
incommensurate spin correlation becomes dominant around the half-magnetization
of the saturation. Possible interpretations of our results are discussed. We
next investigate the effects of the interchain interaction (). The
staggered susceptibility and the uniform magnetization are calculated by
combining the density-matrix renormalization group method with the interchain
mean-field theory. For the parameters where the dominant longitudinal
incommensurate spin correlation appears in the case , the
staggered long-range order does not emerge up to a certain critical value of
around the half-magnetization of the saturation. We calculate the
static structure factor in such a parameter region. The size dependence of the
static structure factor at implies that the system has a
tendency to form an incommensurate long-range order around the
half-magnetization of the saturation. We discuss the recent experimental
results for the NMR relaxation rate in magnetic fields performed for
pentafluorophenyl nitronyl nitroxide.Comment: 10 pages, 12 figures, final version, to appear in PRB vol. 70, No. 5

Validation of RNA Extraction Methods and Suitable Reference Genes for Gene Expression Studies in Developing Fetal Human Inner Ear Tissue
\ua9 2024 by the authors.A comprehensive gene expression investigation requires high-quality RNA extraction, in sufficient amounts for real-time quantitative polymerase chain reaction and next-generation sequencing. In this work, we compared different RNA extraction methods and evaluated different reference genes for gene expression studies in the fetal human inner ear. We compared the RNA extracted from formalin-fixed paraffin-embedded tissue with fresh tissue stored at −80 \ub0C in RNAlater solution and validated the expression stability of 12 reference genes (from gestational week 11 to 19). The RNA from fresh tissue in RNAlater resulted in higher amounts and a better quality of RNA than that from the paraffin-embedded tissue. The reference gene evaluation exhibited four stably expressed reference genes (B2M, HPRT1, GAPDH and GUSB). The selected reference genes were then used to examine the effect on the expression outcome of target genes (OTOF and TECTA), which are known to be regulated during inner ear development. The selected reference genes displayed no differences in the expression profile of OTOF and TECTA, which was confirmed by immunostaining. The results underline the importance of the choice of the RNA extraction method and reference genes used in gene expression studies
A preliminary analysis of in-depth accident data for powered two-wheelers and bicycles in Europe
Despite progress from scientific and technological advancements, road safety remains a major issue worldwide. Road accident impacts such as fatalities, injuries and property damage consist considerable costs borne not only by involved people but society as well. This study aims to present preliminary findings of in-depth accident analysis for two-wheelers (bicycles and powered two wheelers – PTWs) across six countries in Europe. Data regarding the conditions underlying accident occurrence are presented, including time and date, weather, vehicle and road conditions and rider-related parameters such as age, intoxication and use of protective equipment. In addition, a Two Step Cluster Analysis is implemented in order to explore any possible classification of the analysed cases. It appears that two clusters are formed: the first includes more favourable conditions (“no wind, no drugs, good lighting”) while the second consists of less favourable conditions for road safety (“windy, lighting, unknown DUI condition”). This hints at a meaningful separation of the examination of two-wheeler accidents when the influence of outside factors is considerable. The inclusion of different but representative areas across Europe offers robustness and transferability to the data and respective results
Dynamical structure factors of the magnetization-plateau state in the bond-alternating spin chain with a next-nearest-neighbor interaction
We calculate the dynamical structure factors of the magnetization-plateau
state in the bond-alternating spin chain with a next-nearest-neighbor
interaction. The results show characteristic behaviors depending on the
next-nearest-neighbor interaction and the bond-alternation .
We discuss the lower excited states in comparison with the exact excitation
spectrums of an effective Hamiltonian. From the finite size effects,
characteristics of the lowest excited states are investigated. The
dispersionless mode of the lowest excitation appears in adequate sets of
and , indicating that the lowest excitation is localized
spatially and forms an isolated mode below the excitation continuum. We further
calculate the static structure factors. The largest intensity is located at
for small in fixed . With increasing , the
wavenumber of the largest intensity shifts towards , taking the
incommensurate value.Comment: to appear in Phys. Rev. B (2001
Luttinger liquid behavior in spin chains with a magnetic field
Antiferromagnetic Heisenberg spin chains in a sufficiently strong magnetic
field are Luttinger liquids, whose parameters depend on the actual
magnetization of the chain. Here we present precise numerical estimates of the
Luttinger liquid dressed charge , which determines the critical exponents,
by calculating the magnetization and quadrupole operator profiles for
and S=1 chains using the density matrix renormalization group method. Critical
amplitudes and the scattering length at the chain ends are also determined.
Although both systems are Luttinger liquids the characteristic parameters
differ considerably.Comment: Final version, 6 pages, 6 EPS figure
Coupled Ladders in a Magnetic Field
We investigate the phase transitions in two-leg ladders systems in the
incommensurate phase, for which the gap is destroyed by a magnetic field
() and the ladder is not yet totally saturated (). We
compute quantitatively the correlation functions as a function of the magnetic
field for an isolated strong coupling ladder and use
it to study the phase transition occuring in a three dimensional array of
antiferromagnetically coupled ladders. The three dimensional ordering is in the
universality class of Bose condensation of hard core bosons. We compute the
critical temperature as well as various physical quantities such as
the NMR relaxations rate. has an unusual camel-like shape with a local
minimum at and behaves as for

Measurement schemes for the spin quadratures on an ensemble of atoms
We consider how to measure collective spin states of an atomic ensemble based
on the recent multi-pass approaches for quantum interface between light and
atoms. We find that a scheme with two passages of a light pulse through the
atomic ensemble is efficient to implement the homodyne tomography of the spin
state. Thereby, we propose to utilize optical pulses as a phase-shifter that
rotates the quadrature of the spins. This method substantially simplifies the
geometry of experimental schemes.Comment: 4pages 2 figure
Frustrated 3-Dimensional Quantum Spin Liquid in CuHpCl
Inelastic neutron scattering measurements are reported for the quantum
antiferromagnetic material Cu_2(C_5H_12N_2)_2Cl_4 (CuHpCl). The magnetic
excitation spectrum forms a band extending from 0.9 meV to 1.4 meV. The
spectrum contains two modes that disperse throughout the a-c plane of the
monoclinic unit cell with less dispersion along the unique b-axis. Simple
arguments based on the measured dispersion relations and the crystal structure
show that a spin ladder model is inappropriate for describing CuHpCl. Instead,
it is proposed that hydrogen bond mediated exchange interactions between the
bi-nuclear molecular units yield a three-dimensional interacting spin system
with a recurrent triangular motif similar to the Shastry-Sutherland Model
(SSM). Model independent analysis based on the first moment sum rule shows that
at least four distinct spin pairs are strongly correlated and that two of
these, including the dimer bond of the corresponding SSM, are magnetically
frustrated. These results show that CuHpCl should be classified as a
frustration induced three dimensional quantum spin liquid.Comment: 13 pages, 17 figures (Color) ReSubmitted to Phys. Rev. B 9/21/2001

Dynamical spin correlations in Heisenberg ladder under magnetic field and correlation functions in SO(5) ladder
The zero-temperature dynamical spin-spin correlation functions are calculated
for the spin-1/2 two-leg Heisenberg ladder in a magnetic field above the lower
critical field Hc1. The dynamical structure factors are calculated which
exhibit both massless and massive excitations. These modes appear in different
sectors characterized by the parity in the rung direction and by the momentum
in the direction of the chains. The structure factors have power-law
singularities at the lower edges of their support. The results are also
applicable to spin-1 Heisenberg chain. The implications are briefly discussed
for various correlation functions and the pi-resonance in the SO(5) symmetric
ladder model.Comment: 15 pages, 6 figures, added references; final version to appear in
