Management of the ferry shipping and ferry ports in regional transport systems between continental Europe and the Nordic countries
PURPOSE: The purpose of the article is to research and assets the position of ferry industry in
the transport chains between continental European countries and the Nordic states, as well
as evaluate the activities of ferry and port operators to improve the efficiency of the land-sea
transportation in North – South corridors.DESIGN/METHODOLOGY/APPROACH: Several research methods were applied: literature review,
data exploration method, desk research and comparative analysis.FINDINGS: Research revealed lack of publications on ferry business activity in context of its
functions in regional supply chains. Research has shown that the proper organization and
coordination of services in ferry terminals is the key element to the efficiency of the sea –
land transport chains.PRACTICAL IMPLICATIONS: The article emphasizes that the activities undertaken by the ferry and
port operators allows to improve the efficiency of the regional transport chains in Baltic Sea
Region. The study also indicates the examples of given ports and ferry operators where
implementations of the intermodal solutions are undertaken.ORIGINALITY/VALUE: The review of literature revealed lack of publications concerning
regional transport systems in BSR. The studies discussing ferry shipping primarily focus on
the research into the ferry markets, supply and demand developments, as well as the role of
ferries in short sea shipping. So far not study has been conducted on the activities
undertaken by both ferry and ports in intermodal systems, so there is a research gap in this
area. The paper is the first study on this subject and represents a contribution to the further
detailed research.peer-reviewe
New insights into the ferry business in the turbulent environment
PURPOSE: The purpose of the article is to analyse the challenges faced by the ferry operators
and discuss what activities they take when operating in a turbulent environment resulted
from COVID-19 pandemic and effects of economic situation of the Baltic States.DESIGN/METHODOLOGY/APPROACH: Several research methods were applied, literature review,
data exploration method, desk research and in-depth interviews.FINDINGS: Research revealed lack of current publications on ferry business activity in the
context of dynamic and changing drivers influencing the ferry shipowners during last three
years.PRACTICAL IMPLICATIONS: The article emphasizes that the activities undertaken by the ferry
operators allow to operate despite the negative external factors and what should be
undertaken to minimalize the adverse effects.ORIGINALITY/VALUE: The literature researching the ferry shipping is not extensive, it includes
a relatively small number of scientific articles and monographs. Most of the research
concerns the last decade. However, there are no current studies on the functioning of the
ferry sector, the activity of which in the last three years was significantly influenced by
changes that occurred in the external environment. The article fills the research gap in the
ferry sector studies.peer-reviewe
Development of the ferry and ro-ro industry in an uncertain environment
PURPOSE: The prime objective of the article is to analyse and demonstrate the importance of
ferry and ro-ro services as essential links in regional supply chains in the Baltic Sea Region.
The detailed objective is to analyse the activities of the operators in selected markets in the
face of the necessity to adapt to changing external drivers.DESIGN/METHODOLOGY/APPROACH: To accomplish the objectives, the following research
methods were used, literature review, desk research and in-depth analysis. The author
conducted also in-depth interviews. Desk research and in-depth analysis were based on the
data collected from the ShipPax Information and operators reports. The interviews were
carried out with three shipowners, two of them are ferry companies, the latter operates
ferries and pure roros.FINDINGS: Research revealed lack of current publications on ferry and ro-ro business
activity in the context of dynamic and changing factors influencing the ferry affecting
operators during last four years.PRACTICAL IMPLICATIONS: The article emphasizes that there are so many factors that can
potentially driver or derail the performance of the ferry industry, at the moment incertitude
and caution are the two foremost considerations guiding the forecast. Economic reality will
ultimately be the prime factor in the performance of the ferry and ro-ro industry. Current
incertitude in the global economic outlook and all its discontents, such as inflation, oil prices
and consumer good prices post a threat to the sector.ORIGINALITY/VALUE: The literature researching the ferry shipping is not extensive, it includes
a relatively small number of scientific articles. Most of the research concerns the years
before COVID-2019 pandemic which has become the first of negative factors. There are few
current studies on the functioning of the ferry and ro-ro sectors, the activity of which for the
last four years has been significantly impacted by changes that occurred in the external
environment. The article fills the research gap in the ferry and ro-ro sector studies.peer-reviewe
Challenges for Polish ferry market development in Baltic Sea Region
Polish ferry market has become one of the prime segments of ferry shipping in Baltic Sea Region. It dominates in ferry industry in South Baltic. The ferry cargo and passenger traffic has been growing steadily since Poland’s accession to the European Union. The estimates show that in 2017 the operators transported more than 1,2 million passengers and over 520 thousand cargo vehicles between ports in Poland and Sweden. The increase in trade turnover between Scandinavia and Central Europe as well as growth of tourism affect the demand for ferry transport. The aim of this paper is to explore the prime determinants influencing the development of Polish ferry shipping and to research the challenges that carriers operating the ferry services from Poland to Sweden must face such as internal competition between the operators in Polish market, competition from German and Lithuanian routes and low cost airlines as well as increasing trade volumes. The research hypothesis is: the growth of trade between Scandinavia and Central Europe as well as tourism traffic will increase the demand for ferry transport from Polish ports. Detailed research hypotheses are that: ferry services between Poland and Sweden constitute the primary market on the South Baltic and new tonnage investments to increase the capacity have to be taken
The analyses of determinants affecting the river cruising in Poland in comparison with European tendencies
River cruising is well developed in Europe, particularly in the western, central, and some southern regions, and
river tourism has expanded visibly during the current decade. A number of highly attractive tourist destinations
are located upon rivers, the prime rivers used for cruises being the Danube, Rhine, Maine, Elbe, Loire, and
Seine. The topic of this paper is an analysis of European river cruising and the determinants affecting this tourist product. In particular, the paper analyses the current state of river cruising in Poland, as well as the threats
and opportunities that act as drivers for such cruising activity. This paper aims to identify and rank the main
problems facing river cruising in Poland compared with prime destinations in Europe. River cruising has great
potential, but it requires the removal of barriers and the addition of primary infrastructure
