National Housing Agency press release and allocation order
A press release issued by the National Housing Agency Office of the Housing Expediter regarding allocating a war surplus Dodge-Chrysler plant for the production of Lustron homes. The press release is accompanied by a copy of the allocation order.
The Lustron Corporation was a manufacturer of prefabricated homes headquartered in Columbus, Ohio from the mid-1940s through the mid-1950s. The baked enamel steel Lustron home was developed in response to a housing shortage in the wake of World War II. Lustron homes were faster and less expensive to construct than homes made of traditional building materials and required little upkeep. Despite their promise, the corporation was unable to sell enough homes to break even financially and the Lustron Corporation went out of business by the mid-1950s
