Unjamming of Granular Packings due to Local Perturbations: Stability and Decay of Displacements
We study the mechanical response generated by local deformations in jammed
packings of rigid disks. Based on discrete element simulations we determine the
critical force of the local perturbation that is needed to break the mechanical
equilibrium and examine the generated displacement field. Displacements decay
as a power law of the distance from the perturbation point. The decay exponent
and the critical force exhibit nontrivial dependence on the friction: Both
quantities are nonmonotonic and have a sharp maximum at the friction
coefficient 0.1. We find that the mechanical response properties are closely
related to the problem of force-indeterminacy where similar nonmonotonic
behavior was observed previously. We establish direct connection between the
critical force and the ensemble of static force networks.Comment: 4 pages, 4 figure

The goal of this review is to evaluate the management options for achondroplasia, the most common non-lethal skeletal dysplasia. This disease is characterized by short stature and a variety of complications, some of which can be quite severe.
Despite several attempts to standardize care, there is still no widely accepted consensus. This is in part due to absence of concrete data on the incidence of sudden unexplained death in infants with achondroplasia and the best investigation for ascertaining which individuals could benefit from foramen magnum decompression surgery. In this review, we identify the different options of care and management for the various orthopedic, neurologic, and respiratory complications. In parallel, several innovative or drug repositioning therapies are being investigated that would restore bone growth but may also prevent complications. Pecan Park Disc Golf Course: A Visual Interpretation Using HighSpatial Resolution Multispectral Imagery
To aid the visual interpretation of a disc golf course in Nacogdoches, Texas, a large format map representing the tee and basket location of each fairway collected with a Trimble GeoExplorer 3 GPS unit were overlaid on a high spatial resolution multi spectral imagery. Individual maps representing all 18 fairways were created and displayed with ground perspectives depicting a disc golf player\u27s visual perspective per selected tees
The potential of three whole blood microRNAs to predict outcome and monitor treatment response in sarcoid-bearing equids.
MicroRNAs (miRNAs) have been proposed as biomarkers for equine sarcoid (ES) disease. In this study, the suitability of three whole blood miRNAs to diagnose ES and to predict and monitor the outcome of therapy was explored. Using reverse transcription-quantitative polymerase chain reaction (RT-qPCR), expression levels of eca-miR-127, eca-miR-379, and eca-miR-432 in whole blood of ES-affected equids before and at least one year after therapy were compared to those of unaffected control equids. Associations of age, sex, species, diagnosis, and therapy outcome with miRNA expression levels were examined using general linear models. In total, 48 ES-affected equids and 47 control equids were recruited. From the affected animals, 31 responded favorably to treatment, and 17 demonstrated a failure of therapy. None of the tested miRNAs were influenced by age. Male equids showed increased expression of eca-miR-127 compared to females and horses showed higher expression levels of eca-miR-379 and eca-miR-432 than donkeys. Eca-miR-127 was confirmed as a diagnostic discriminator between ES-affected and control equids. No difference in miRNA profiles before therapy was found when comparing ES-affected equids with success vs. failure of therapy. Eca-miR-379 and eca-miR-432 decreased over time in horses where therapy was successful, but not in those cases where it failed. Biological variables influence equine whole blood miRNA expression, which may complicate biomarker validation. While none of the tested miRNAs could predict the response to therapy in ES-affected equids and eca-miR-127 showed poor diagnostic accuracy for ES, eca-miR-379 and eca-miR-432 miRNAs might allow refinement of monitoring of success of ES therapy
Frictional coupling between sliding and spinning motion
We show that the friction force and torque, acting at a dry contact of two
objects moving and rotating relative to each other, are inherently coupled. As
a simple test system, a sliding and spinning disk on a horizontal flat surface
is considered. We calculate, and also measure, how the disk is slowing down,
and find that it always stops its sliding and spinning motion at the same
moment. We discuss the impact of this coupling between friction force and

Detailed Radio Spectra of Selected Compact Sources in the Nucleus of M82
We have determined detailed radio spectra for 26 compact sources in the
starburst nucleus of M82, between 74 and 1.3 cm. Seventeen show low-frequency
turnovers. One other has a thermal emission spectrum, and we identify it as an
HII region. The low frequency turnovers are due to absorption by the
interstellar gas in M82. New information on the AGN candidate 44.01+595, shows
it to have a non-thermal falling powerlaw spectrum at the highest frequencies,
and that it is strongly absorbed below 2 GHz. We derive large magnetic fields
in the supernova remnants, of order 1-2 milliGauss, hence large pressures in
the sources suggest that the brightest ones are either expanding or are
strongly confined by a dense interstellar medium. From the largest source in

Unjamming due to local perturbations in granular packings with and without gravity
We investigate the unjamming response of disordered packings of frictional
hard disks with the help of computer simulations. First, we generate jammed
configurations of the disks and then force them to move again by local
perturbations. We study the spatial distribution of the stress and displacement
response and find long range effects of the perturbation in both cases. We
record the penetration depth of the displacements and the critical force that
is needed to make the system yield. These quantities are tested in two types of
systems: in ideal homogeneous packings in zero gravity and in packings settled
under gravity. The penetration depth and the critical force are sensitive to
the interparticle friction coefficient. Qualitatively, the same nonmonotonic
friction dependence is found both with and without gravity, however the
location of the extrema are at different friction values. We discuss the role
of the connectivity of the contact network and of the pressure gradient in the
