    Experimental benchmarking of partial shading effect on thin-film and crystalline-silicon solar photovoltaic modules

    Partial shading affects the performance and reliability of thin-film and crystalline-silicon (c-Si) photovoltaic (PV) modules. In this paper, the thin-film and c-Si modules are experimentally benchmarked by introducing various partial shading patterns over the modules. More specifically, experiments are performed using SPISUN 5600 SLP-based test-rig. The benchmarking reveals that thin-film and c-Si technologies behave differently under the same shading patterns. Furthermore, thermographic images are also presented to explore the effect of partial shadingon both modules

    Control of Hybrid Diesel/PV/Battery/Ultra-Capacitor Systems for Future Shipboard Microgrids

    In recent times, concerns over fossil fuel consumption and severe environmental pollution have grabbed attention in marine vessels. The fast development in solar technology and the significant reduction in cost over the past decade have allowed the integration of solar technology in marine vessels. However, the highly intermittent nature of photovoltaic (PV) modules might cause instability in shipboard microgrids. Moreover, the penetration is much more in the case of utilizing PV panels on ships due to the continuous movement. This paper, therefore, presents a frequency sharing approach to smooth the effect of the highly intermittent nature of PV panels integrated with the shipboard microgrids. A hybrid system based on an ultra-capacitor and a lithium-ion battery is developed such that high power and short term fluctuations are catered by an ultra-capacitor, whereas long duration and high energy density fluctuations are catered by the lithium-ion battery. Further, in order to cater for the fluctuations caused by weather or variation in sea states, a battery energy storage system (BESS) is utilized in parallel to the dc-link capacitor using a buck-boost converter. Hence, to verify the dynamic behavior of the proposed approach, the model is designed in MATLAB/SIMULINK. The simulation results illustrate that the proposed model helps to smooth the fluctuations and to stabilize the DC bus voltage

    Kernel recursive least square tracker and long-short term memory ensemble based battery health prognostic model

    Summary: A data-driven approach is developed to predict the future capacity of lithium-ion batteries (LIBs) in this work. The empirical mode decomposition (EMD), kernel recursive least square tracker (KRLST), and long short-term memory (LSTM) are used to derive the proposed approach. First, the LIB capacity data is split into local regeneration and monotonic global degradation using the EMD approach. Next, the KRLST is used to track the decomposed intrinsic mode functions, and the residual signal is predicted using the LSTM sub-model. Finally, all the predicted intrinsic mode functions and the residual are ensembled to get the future capacity. The experimental and comparative analysis validates the high accuracy (RMSE of 0.00103) of the proposed ensemble approach compared to Gaussian process regression and LSTM fused model. Furthermore, two times lesser error than other fused models makes this approach an efficient tool for battery health prognostics

    Comparison of Conventional Cyclophosphamide versus Fludarabine-Based Conditioning in High-Risk Aplastic Anemia Patients Undergoing Matched-Related Donor Transplantation

    Allogeneic stem cell transplant for high-risk aplastic anemia (AA) yields inferior results using conventional cyclophosphamide (CY)-based conditioning. The use of fludarabine (Flu)-based regimens has resulted in improved outcomes in high-risk patients. Limited data are available comparing these two conditioning regimens in such patients. We retrospectively analyzed 192 high-risk patients undergoing matched-related donor transplantation from July 2001 to December 2018. The median age was 19.5 (2–52) years. Patients were divided into 2 groups, Cy200 anti-thymocyte globulin (ATG)20 (Gp1 n = 79) or Flu120–150 Cy120–160 ATG20 (Gp2 n = 113). The risk of graft failure was significantly higher in Gp1, and the majority occurred in patients with >2 risk factors (p = 0.02). The incidence of grade II-IV acute graft versus host disease (GVHD) and chronic GVHD was not significantly different between the two groups. The overall survival (OS) of the study cohort was 81.3 %, disease-free survival (DFS) 76.6 % and GVHD-free relapse-free survival (GRFS) was 64.1%. DFS and GRFS were significantly higher in Gp2 as compared to Gp1: DFS 84.1% versus 68.4 % (p = 0.02), GRFS 77.9% versus 54.4% (p = 0.01), respectively. We conclude that Flu-based conditioning is associated with superior OS, DFS and GRFS as compared to the conventional Cy-based regimen in high-risk AA
