A Survey of "The Sala degli Stucchi, an ornate baroque hall"

    Get PDF
The "Sala degli stucchi" is a heavely decorated baroque hall, as the Italian name itself suggests, in the Royal Palace in Turin. The present work describes a survey of this historic object. This work is a part of a wider project on the study of Architectural Patrimony carried out for the La Soprintendenza per il Patrimonio storico, artistico ed etnoantropologico per il Piemonte. It is a chance to test the modern survey techniques of photogrammetry and LIDAR. This article focuses on the integrated use of digital photogrammetry and LIDAR in a demanding environment, in order to take best advantages of both techniques. Different survey products were obtained, ranging from 3D and photogrammetric models to orthophotos. The adopted techniques, the problems and difficulties that arose during the survey process are shown in the paper. The obtained and stored results were also used to make a complete 3D model of the whole hal

“Normal citizens” versus “Rowdies”: police categorisations of protesters in Germany

    Get PDF
The paper investigates police perceptions of protesters. Based on group discussions with riot police and interviews with high ranking officers, six domains are analysed as dimensions of a risk constellation contributing to the emergence of an enemy image of the protester. The findings suggest that labels describing the “police counterpart” often express distance and opposition (1) and depoliticise demonstrations (2). Furthermore, formal (3) and informal (4) categorisations of protesters as well as the perception of indications of threat in policing practice (5) are examined. Bipolar patterns of classification of protesters were found to be influential. Classifications are partly based in the law and partly in particularistic and normative subcultural attributions of legitimacy which police transfer into their organisational interpretive schemata distinguishing between legality/illegality. For explanatory means the study utilises perspectives of organisational sociology as well as the cultural distance between the police and the protesters (6). This is further elaborated using the social figure of the “normal citizen”, in which specific police conceptions of normality are condensed and which serves as a threshold for the perception of deviant protesters. Besides the implications for theory of democracy of the analysed clichés and enemy images the findings conclusively suggest that the distanced to hostile relationship between the police and some protesters does not merely represent a pedagogical or “practical” problem of the police, but is the expression of a certain conflict structure. In this structure organisational and individual factors on the side of the police as well as their actual conflict experience at demonstrations converge

Discovery of TUG-770: a highly potent free fatty acid receptor 1 (FFA1/GPR40) agonist for treatment of type 2 diabetes

    Get PDF
Free fatty acid receptor 1 (FFA1 or GPR40) enhances glucose-stimulated insulin secretion from pancreatic β-cells and currently attracts high interest as a new target for the treatment of type 2 diabetes. We here report the discovery of a highly potent FFA1 agonist with favorable physicochemical and pharmacokinetic properties. The compound efficiently normalizes glucose tolerance in diet-induced obese mice, an effect that is fully sustained after 29 days of chronic dosing

Chances and Limitations of a Hybrid Refrigerant System for Vehicle Air Conditioning

    Get PDF
According to the motor vehicle directive of the European Community, as of January 2017 new cars will only be allowed to use air conditioning systems with refrigerants of GWP below 150. A moratorium to significantly extend this deadline is not to be expected considering the recently negotiated F-Gas-Regulation. One option will be flammable refrigerants of the ASHRAE classification A3 or a future classification A2L. However they are subject to safety reservations when used in systems with direct evaporation. R744 requires for a wide use and a complete realization with development, industrialization and validation probably more time than the remaining available time horizon. Therefore an option shall be discussed, which is based on a hybrid solution with R744 and a flammable refrigerant and which may allow a sufficiently rapid implementation. The utilization of R744 refrigerant mixtures shall not be considered. Instead a small and compact refrigerant loop will be operated with A3 or A2L refrigerants. Compactness, leak tightness and significant reduced charge amounts already contribute to the enhanced safety. R744 will be used as a secondary refrigerant. For the distribution in branched systems, new approaches have to be discussed. Additional safety aspects arising from the use of R744 as secondary refrigerant and at the same time in the function as fire extinguishing medium. Efficiency, safety, time-to-market and scenarios for the possible full transition to R744 as a refrigerant will be discussed

Phosphate absorption by Arabidopsis thaliana : the effects of phosphorus nutritional status : a thesis presented in partial fulfilment of the requirements for the degree of Master of Science in Plant Biology and Biotechnology at Massey University, Palmerston North, New Zealand

The effect of phosphorus nutritional status on phosphate uptake within the concentration range of the high affinity uptake mechanism, and subsequent translocation to the shoot was investigated in the plant species Arabidopsis thaliana. Plants of different nutritional status were generated by exposure to different set phosphate concentrations throughout an aseptic hydroponic growing period. Alternatively phosphorus deficiency was induced by growth at high concentrations of phosphate followed by a period of 5 days in phosphate-free hydroponic solution. In effect these growth conditions resulted in plants of distinguishable phenotypic character with respect to phosphate absorption, phosphate translocation, arsenate sensitivity and root-shoot ratio. To determine absorption kinetics nutrient depletion trials were carried out in which phosphate uptake was measured by monitoring the loss of phosphate from depletion solutions of set initial phosphate concentration to which the root systems of intact plants were exposed. Km and Vmax kinetic parameters were calculated from the depletion trial data using the software package "Igor Pro". Influx and net phosphate uptake was determined by setting the initial phosphate concentration of the depletion trials using either 32 P labelled KH 2 P0 4 or non-labelled KH 2 P0 4 respectively. Radioactivity was measured by counting the Cerenkov radiation in a scintillation counter. Non-labelled phosphate depletion was measured by either spectrophotometric assay or ion chromatography. To asses the effect of the phosphate analogue arsenate on phosphate influx, 32 P labelled phosphate uptake was measured with arsenate (KH 2 AsO 4 ) present in the depletion solution at a concentration of 20 µM. Phosphate translocation was determined by counting the Cerenkov radiation in the roots and shoots separately of plants that had been exposed to the 32 P labelled depletion solutions. Under the conditions of this project, phosphorus deficient plants exhibited alterations in the kinetic parameters Km and Vmax for phosphate uptake that were dependent on how the deficiency was induced. For plants that were grown continuously at low phosphate concentrations Km was decreased without a concomitant change in Vmax. For plants that were grown at high concentrations of phosphate followed by a 5 day period of phosphate starvation, a significant increase in Vmax was recorded without an associated change to Km. Phosphate uptake was found to be severely inhibited by the presence of arsenate in the depletion solution. Greatest inhibition however was found not to occur at the level of absorption into the plant root system but rather appeared to be at a site involved in phosphate loading into the xylem. Inhibition at this site was also found to be greatest in low phosphorus status plants. From these results it is suggested that plants of low phosphorus status possess high affinity phosphate xylem loading mechanisms, induced under conditions of phosphorus deficiency, which have a greater susceptibility to arsenate competitive inhibition and toxicity than equivalent xylem loading mechanisms in high phosphorus status plants
