    Structural arrangement of crystalline/amorphous phases of polyethylene-block-polystyrene copolymer as induced by orientation techniques

    A polyethylene-block-polystyrene copolymer film having a bicontinuous crystalline/amorphous phases was tensile-drawn under various conditions for the structural arrangement of these phases. The prepared film could be drawn below the melting temperature of the polyethylene component, with the highest drawability obtained at 60ーC. However, the initial bicontinuous structure was gradually destroyed with increasing strain because the drawing temperature was lower than the glass-transition temperature of the polystyrene component. Correspondingly, a necking phenomenon was clearly recognizable when samples were drawn. In contrast, drawing near the melting temperature of the polyethylene component produced less orientation of both the crystalline and amorphous phases, resulting in homogeneous deformation with lower drawing stress. These results indicated that the modification of the lower ductility of the polystyrene component was key to the effective structural arrangement of both phases by tensile drawing. Here, a solvent-swelling technique was applied to improve polystyrene deformability even below its glass-transition temperature. Tensile drawing after such a treatment successfully induced the orientation of both the crystalline and amorphous phases while retaining their initial continuities.     Hodgkin's disease of the thoracic vertebrae

    BACKGROUND CONTEXT: Hodgkin's disease rarely occurs in the spine, which is usually a setting for the advanced form of the disease. PURPOSE: To describe an unusual case of isolated, primary spinal Hodgkin's disease and to draw attention to this disease as a possible diagnosis in patients with mixed inflammatory cell infiltrate lesions located in the thoracic spine. STUDY DESIGN/SETTING: A case report of a 28-year-old woman who presented with back pain and progressive weakness in the lower extremities as a result of spinal cord compression from Hodgkin's disease of the thoracic vertebrae. METHODS: We report a new case of spinal cord compression resulting from Hodgkin's disease of the thoracic vertebrae. Decompression surgery was performed in the patient, followed by antibiotic treatment. RESULTS: Antibiotic therapy temporarily improved inflammation and fever. However, magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) evaluation showed that the inflammatory reaction in the lesion was not completely resolved. The disease progressed and later investigations revealed Hodgkin's disease, which improved with a course of chemotherapy and radiation. CONCLUSIONS: Hodgkin's disease should be considered in the differential diagnosis of spinal neoplastic lesions with clinical features similar to spondylitis. Because MRI evaluation showed that the vertebral disc was maintained in this case, the presence of a tumor rather than inflammation should have been suspected.ArticleSPINE JOURNAL. 13(8):E59-E63 (2013)journal articl

    Synthesis of Novel Temperature-responsive Polymer Gel of Poly(aspartic acid)s

    Recently, thermo-responsive polymer gels have been studied in various research fields such as drug delivery system. One of represetative thermo-responsive polymer gels is poly(N-isopropylacrylamide) gel (PNIPAAm) that has a rapid and reversible volume phase transition. However, PNIPAAm is not biodegradable, resulting in limitation of its use in medical fields. Novel thermo-responsive polymer gel was prepared by closslinking of isopropylamine modified poly(succinimide) (IPA-PSI) (Poly[α,β -(DL-aspartate isopropyl amide)-co-(succinimide)]) with hexamethylenediamine. Because of peptide bonds in backbone, therefore, it is expected to possess biodegradability and biocompatibility. These gels changed their volume in response to change of environment such as temperature, pH and concentration of salt in water.
