    Investigation on bacterial flora of farmed freshwater prawn (Macrobrachium rosenbergii de Man) in Bangladesh

    Total bacterial load in the haemolymph of freshwater prawn Macrobrachium rosenbergii varied from 6.2x10⁴ to 1.9x10⁷ CFU/ml whereas in the hepatopancreas, bacterial load varied from 1.9x10³ to 2.9x10⁵ CFU/g. The total bacterial load in the pond water varied from 2.6x10² to 4.1x10⁵ CFU/ml. The isolated bacterial genera in the haemolymph and the hepatopancreas of prawn were Streptococcus, Acinetobacter, Micrococcus, Aeromonas, Vibrio, Flavobacterium, Staphylococcus and Pseudomonas, whereas the detected bacterial genera in pond water were Micrococcus, Streptococcus, Vibrio, Flavobacterium, Staphylococcus, Pseudomonas and Aeromonas. Among the detected genera, Vibrio and Staphylococcus were found to be dominant genera in the haemolymph of the sampled prawn throughout the study period whereas Staphylococcus and Pseudomonas were dominant in pond water

    Two BFRI evolved aquaculture technologies - integrated rice fish farming and carp polyculture with over-wintered fingerlings under different stocking densities were tested during 2003-04. The study was coordinated with two local NGOs namely NICHAITA and JNDP, Muktagacha, Mymensingh. Integrated rice fish farming technology was demonstrated in 9 plots each having an area between 60-100 dec. during boro season. Fifteen days after transplantation of rice seedlings, fingerlings of rajpunti (Barbodes gonionotus) of 7-10 g of individual weight were stocked in the rice fields at the density of 3,000 (T1), 3,750 (T2) and 4,500/ha (T3). The corresponding final weight of fish after three and half months in treatments 1, 2 and 3 were 110±14.21, 101±16.55 and 86±22.28 g, respectively. The mean weight of fish in treatments 1 and 2 was significantly higher than treatment 3. Fish production obtained from treatments 1, 2 and 3 were 218.16±18.29, 239.70±25.11 and 236±24.66 kg/ha, respectively. On-farm demonstrations of carp polyculture using over-wintered fingerlings rohu (25-28 g), catla (24-26 g), mrigal (21-26 g) and grass carp (20-24 g) under different stocking densities were undertaken in nine earthen ponds (1,200-1,600 square meters) for a period of six months at three different stocking densities. The stocking densities of treatment 1 (T1), treatment 2 (T2) and treatment 3 (T3) were 2,000, 3,000 and 4,000/ha, respectively. Fish were fed with rice bran and mustard oil cake (3:1). Soft green grass and banana leaves were provided mainly for grass carp. At harvest, the production obtained in treatments 1, 2 and 3 were 2,325±74.75, 2,620±49.66 and 2,982± 171.52 kg/ha, respectively. The results demonstrated higher growth of fish in treatment 1 than those of treatments 2 and 3. However, treatment 3 contributed relatively higher production than those of treatments 1 and 2, whereas, highest net benefit was received from treatment 2

    Hydraulic design charts for elliptical pipes.

    This paper concerns charts for the hydraulic design of elliptical pipes under partfull gravity flow conditions. Examples of such pipes are currently commercially available, and may be laid with the major axis of the cross section either horizontal or vertical. Similar charts have been published for circular pipes and for pipes of ovoid cross section, which have particular uses in combined sewerage. Such charts are useful for preliminary sizing and outline design purposes. The applications of this type of chart to elliptical pipes lead to two distinctive points that will be discussed in the paper. Firstly, the two possible orientations of the pipe resulted in different sets of lines on the chart, and these may be used to illustrate the relative performance of the two orientations, which have different practical benefits. The second point, of somewhat more academic interest, relates to the geometry of the ellipse. Although the cross sectional area of the ellipse has a well known and exact mathematical formula, the perimeter of the ellipse does not. Different approximate expressions for the total perimeter are compared with the elemental approach that was used to establish the pipe cross section geometry for the computerised production of the design charts

    Composition, temperature and frequency dependent magnetic, dielectric and electrical properties of magnesium-zinc ferrites

    Polycrystalline spinel MgxZn0.3Cu0.7-2xFe2+xO4, where x = 0.10, 0.20, 0.25, 0.30 and 0.35 ferrites (hereafter abbreviated as Mg-Zn) have been prepared by conventional double sintering technique. The samples were sintered at 1250°C in air for 6 hours. Measurements have been done at temperature and frequency ranges of 0 - 350°C and 0 - 500 kHz, respectively. In this work, some extrinsic magnetic properties such as Curie temperature, initial permeability, loss factor, quality factor, dielectric constant and resistivity of the samples have been studied. The Curie temperature and loss tangent of the samples decreased with increase in Cu-content whereas permeability, Qfactor, resistivity and dielectric constant have been noticed to be increased with the increase in Cucontent. The decrease in Curie temperature related to fact of weakening the strength of exchange AB interaction. Maxwell-Wagner type of interfacial polarization might have found correlated with the normal dielectric behavior of the samples, however no relaxation peaks were observed in the dielectric dispersion curves of the Mg-Zn samples in virgin state or doped state

    Chemically Reactive Solute Distribution in a Steady MHD Boundary Layer Flow over a Stretching Surface

    The paper is concerned to find the distribution of the chemically reactant solute in the MHD flow of an electrically conducting viscous incompressible fluid over a stretching surface. The first order chemical reaction and the variable solute distribution along the surface are taken into consideration. The governing partial differential equations along with appropriate boundary conditions for flow field and reactive solute are transformed into a set of non-linear self-similar ordinary differential equations by using scaling group of transformations. An exact analytic solution is obtained for the velocity field. Using this velocity field, we obtain numerical solution for the reactant concentration field. It reveals from the study that the values of concentration profile enhances with the increase of the magnetic field and decreases with increase of Schmidt number as well as the reaction rate parameter. Most importantly, when the solute distribution along the surface increases then the concentration profile decreases

    Design, development, calibration, and testing of indigenously developed strain gauge based dynamometer for cutting force measurement in the milling process

    In this work, a milling dynamometer based on strain gauge with an octagonal and square ring was designed and tested. Strain gauges were attached with the mechanical rings to detect the deformation, during the machining process. Wheatstone bridge circuit was equipped with gauges to acquire the strain as voltage owing to the deformation of mechanical rings when machining takes place. The finite element analysis (FEA) was used to identify the location of maximum deformation and stress. The direction of rings and location of gauges were decided to increase the sensitivity and decrease the cross-sensitivity. Then, the cutting force was acquired through NI 6221 M series data acquisition (DAQ) card. The dynamometer had undergone a cycle of tests to verify its static and dynamic characteristics. The metrological characterization was performed according to the calibration procedure based on ISO 376 – 2011 standard. The cutting force was measured with both the dynamometers through milling experiments based on Taguchi’s L9 orthogonal array and the results were recorded. The measured cutting force varied from 300 N to 550 N. The obtained results depicted that low-cost milling dynamometer was reliable to measure the three component machining force. Overall, the square ring based dynamometer provides the better static and dynamic characteristics in terms of linearity, cross-sensitivity (4%), uncertainty (0.054%), and natural frequency (362.41 rev/s)

    Excitation functions of 3He-particle-induced nuclear reactions on 103Rh: Experimental and theoretical investigations

    Excitation functions for the 3He-induced reactions on 103Rh as alternative pathway for the production of the medically used 103Pd were studied by the stacked foil technique. Excitation functions of the 103Rh(3α, x) 103Pd, 103,104,104m,105Ag and 100,101,101m,102,102mRh reactions were determined up to 27 MeV by detecting only the characteristic γ-rays obtained from the decay of residual nuclei. The experimental results were compared with the theoretical ones obtained from the EMPIRE-3.2 code and ‎the TENDL nuclear data library.
