    Need for Adequate Funding in the Administration of Secondary Education in Nigeria

    Funding is considered all over the world as the life wire that propels the educational sector towards achieving her objectives. The paper focuses on the need for adequate funding of secondary education in Nigeria. Emphases were laid on the alternative sources of funding for secondary schools as well as the consequences of inadequate funding on secondary school such as infrastructural decay, high cost of education, low level of staff commitment. Influence of adequate funding on secondary education such as infrastructural development, employment of quality teachers was also highlighted. The study also discussed the reasons for inadequate financing of secondary education among which is population explosion and lack of adequate planning. The techniques for proper financial management were also identified. It was concluded that proper funding plays a significant role in the achievement of the objectives of secondary education in the country. It was therefore recommended that the government should be committed to the funding of secondary education through adequate budgetary allocation while the private sector should also contribute to schools development as part of their corporate social responsibility.Keywords: Funding, Secondary, Education, Budget, Administratio

    Additive Antinociceptive Effects of a Combination of Vitamin C and Vitamin E after Peripheral Nerve Injury

    Accumulating evidence indicates that increased generation of reactive oxygen species (ROS) contributes to the development of exaggerated pain hypersensitivity during persistent pain. In the present study, we investigated the antinociceptive efficacy of the antioxidants vitamin C and vitamin E in mouse models of inflammatory and neuropathic pain. We show that systemic administration of a combination of vitamins C and E inhibited the early behavioral responses to formalin injection and the neuropathic pain behavior after peripheral nerve injury, but not the inflammatory pain behavior induced by Complete Freund's Adjuvant. In contrast, vitamin C or vitamin E given alone failed to affect the nociceptive behavior in all tested models. The attenuated neuropathic pain behavior induced by the vitamin C and E combination was paralleled by a reduced p38 phosphorylation in the spinal cord and in dorsal root ganglia, and was also observed after intrathecal injection of the vitamins. Moreover, the vitamin C and E combination ameliorated the allodynia induced by an intrathecally delivered ROS donor. Our results suggest that administration of vitamins C and E in combination may exert synergistic antinociceptive effects, and further indicate that ROS essentially contribute to nociceptive processing in special pain states

    Large expert-curated database for benchmarking document similarity detection in biomedical literature search

    Document recommendation systems for locating relevant literature have mostly relied on methods developed a decade ago. This is largely due to the lack of a large offline gold-standard benchmark of relevant documents that cover a variety of research fields such that newly developed literature search techniques can be compared, improved and translated into practice. To overcome this bottleneck, we have established the RElevant LIterature SearcH consortium consisting of more than 1500 scientists from 84 countries, who have collectively annotated the relevance of over 180 000 PubMed-listed articles with regard to their respective seed (input) article/s. The majority of annotations were contributed by highly experienced, original authors of the seed articles. The collected data cover 76% of all unique PubMed Medical Subject Headings descriptors. No systematic biases were observed across different experience levels, research fields or time spent on annotations. More importantly, annotations of the same document pairs contributed by different scientists were highly concordant. We further show that the three representative baseline methods used to generate recommended articles for evaluation (Okapi Best Matching 25, Term Frequency–Inverse Document Frequency and PubMed Related Articles) had similar overall performances. Additionally, we found that these methods each tend to produce distinct collections of recommended articles, suggesting that a hybrid method may be required to completely capture all relevant articles. The established database server located at https://relishdb.ict.griffith.edu.au is freely available for the downloading of annotation data and the blind testing of new methods. We expect that this benchmark will be useful for stimulating the development of new powerful techniques for title and title/abstract-based search engines for relevant articles in biomedical research

    Advances in understanding the fundamental aspects required for successful cryopreservation of Australian flora

    Australia is host to an amazing diversity of species, many of which require conservation efforts. In vitro culture provides a tool for not only conserving these threatened species but allows for their propagation from limited starting material. Cryopreservation provides the greatest long-term storage option for in vitro cultures and as a conservation tool for other germplasm. However, while cryopreservation has proven capable of delivering viable long-term storage with some plant taxa, the process of deriving protocols is still largely an incremental process. The key to faster and more intuitive optimising of cryopreservation protocols lies with continuing to develop a better understanding of key factors, including issues with plant physiology (such as genetic stability, the composition of the proteome and metabolome, cell membrane characteristics, and antioxidant defences) and how the stresses imposed by cryopreservation (such as the excision damage, desiccation, cryoprotective agent toxicity, ice crystal damage, and cooling to cryogenic temperatures) interact and contribute to the cryocapability of a species. This review focuses on the advances that have been made towards understanding cryogenic stress and how this has led to improved cryopreservation protocols, in the context of cryopreserving Australian flora
