    Insecure adult attachment and reflective functioning as mechanisms of the relationship between traumatic life events and suicidal ideation: A path analysis

    The relationship between traumatic life events and increased suicide risk has been well reported in literature. However, the complex nature of suicidality phenomena still hinders our ability to comprehend the mediation mechanism underlying this association. In this study, we examined the mediating role of adult attachment and reflective functioning in the relationship between traumatic life events and suicidal ideation. Nine hundred and fifty Italian adults completed an online survey evaluating traumatic life events, adult attachment, reflective functioning and suicidal ideation. The path analysis showed that the positive relationship between traumatic life events and suicidal ideation was partially mediated by attachment anxiety and reflective functioning. From a clinical point of view, these results support the relevance of evaluating and improving patients' ability to mentalize as a part of psychotherapeutic intervention aimed at reducing suicidality in people with a history of traumatic experiences and attachment anxiety

    Post-traumatic stress disorder among LGBTQ people: a systematic review and meta-analysis

    Aims: Lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender and queer people (LGBTQ) are at increased risk of traumatization. This systematic review aimed to summarize data regarding the risk of post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) for LGBTQ people and their subgroups. Methods: Medline, Scopus, PsycINFO and EMBASE were searched until September 2022. Studies reporting a comparative estimation of PTSD among LGBTQ population and the general population (i.e., heterosexual/cisgender), without restrictions on participants' age and setting for the enrolment, were identified. Meta-analyses were based on odds ratio (OR and 95% confidence intervals [CI]), estimated through inverse variance models with random effects. Results: The review process led to the selection of 27 studies, involving a total of 31,903 LGBTQ people and 273,842 controls, which were included in the quantitative synthesis. Overall, LGBTQ people showed an increased risk of PTSD (OR: 2.20 [95% CI: 1.85; 2.60]), although there was evidence of marked heterogeneity in the estimate (I2 = 91%). Among LGBTQ subgroups, transgender people showed the highest risk of PTSD (OR: 2.52 [95% CI: 2.22; 2.87]) followed by bisexual people (OR: 2.44 [95% CI: 1.05; 5.66]), although these comparisons are limited by the lack of data for other sexual and gender minorities, such as intersex people. Interestingly, the risk of PTSD for bisexual people was confirmed also considering lesbian and gay as control group (OR: 1.44 [95% CI: 1.07; 1.93]). The quality of the evidence was low. Conclusions: LGBTQ people are at higher risk of PTSD compared with their cisgender/heterosexual peers. This evidence may contribute to the public awareness on LGBTQ mental health needs and suggest supportive strategies as well as preventive interventions (e.g., supportive programs, counselling, and destigmatizing efforts) as parts of a tailored health-care planning aimed to reduce psychiatric morbidity in this at-risk population

    COVID-19 outbreak at a summer camp in Piedimont region in 2021: description, lessons learned and recommendations for future summer camps Introduction In August 2021, an outbreak of coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) occurred in a summer camp in Piedmont region, Italy, affecting primarily campers aged ≤16 years. We conducted a retrospective cohort study among campers and personnel (attendees) to determine the attack rate (AR), evaluate possible factors associated with transmission and propose recommended measures for the organization of future summer camps. Materials and methods A de-identified database including demographic, role of attendees, cohorting, means of transportation to the camp, inter-camper interactions, SARS-CoV-2 testing results and symptomatology was used. All analysis data came from a collection of data carried out by the organizing private company and the information related to the mitigation protocol put in place was provided by the health care personnel. All campers were asked to have an antigen/molecular test within 72 hours before departure. Nine dedicated buses departed from different Italian regions towards the camp. All travellers wore a surgical mask during the trip. Upon arrival, regardless of the bus used, the campers were divided into 11 subgroups with no further contact between them unless they were blood relatives. No SARS-CoV-2 screening tests were scheduled for campers after arrival and during the camp period. On the other hand, personnel had a screening test at each shift change. During the camp period, antigen tests were performed at cases with symptoms suggestive of infection. Only attendees enrolled in the private company and those who received at least one test since arrival at the camp were considered in the study. We calculated overall AR and relative risk (RR) along with specific, transmission-focused risk factors. Results Among the 187 study participants, the median age was 14 years (range: 6-45). Seven days after arrival at the camp, 8 campers developed symptoms and tested positive. The overall AR was 33.7% (63 out of 187), and 34.2% (50/146) for campers and 31.7% (13/41) for staff, respectively. Among those with available symptoms information, 72% (36/50) were asymptomatic at the time of testing. Only 17.1% of campers had direct contact with blood relatives from other subgroups. The AR of participants using a bus was 36.2% (59/163) with an RR of 1.18 (95% CI = 0.51-2.73,) and the AR of those belonging to a subgroup was 35% (62/177) with an RR of 3.5 (95% CI = 0.54-22.7). For personnel, participation to a subgroup gave an AR of 38.7% (12/31) and an RR of 3.87 (95% CI = 0.57-26.18). All but four subgroups had a high AR (>33,3). Conclusions Getting tested prior to traveling and campers separation into low-contact subgroups was not sufficient enough to avoid a high number of infections in this summer camp. Analysis did not allow the identification of an index case or helped to understand whether the outbreak originated from the attendees who travelled on the same bus. The high AR observed in all subgroups suggest that there was frequent contact between attendees belonging to different subgroups. Sharing of common areas such as the canteen and contact between attendees are possible factors that have contributed to the spread of the outbreak. The experience gained by the analysis of this data was used for the review of measures for the organization of summer camps in 2022

    Different tool training induces specific effects on body metric representation

    Morphology and functional aspects of the tool have been proposed to be critical factors modulating tool use-induced plasticity. However, how these aspects contribute to changing body representation has been underinvestigated. In the arm bisection task, participants have to estimate the length of their own arm by indicating its midpoint, a paradigm used to investigate the representation of the metric properties of the body. We employed this paradigm to investigate the impact of different actions onto tool embodiment. Our findings suggest that a training requiring actions mostly with proximal (shoulder) or distal (wrist) parts induces a different shift in the perceived arm midpoint. This effect is independent of, but enhanced by, the use of the tool during the training and in part influenced by specific demands of the task. These results suggest that specific motor patterns required by the training can induce different changes of body representation, calling for rethinking the concept of tool embodiment, which would be characterized not simply by the morphology of the tools, but also by the actions required for their specific use

    The Potential Role of Natural Gas Vehicles in the Reduction of GHG Emissions in the Italian Private Transportation Framework

    This paper investigates the possibility to reduce the emissions of CO2 in the Italian passenger transportation sector by increasing the share of internal combustion engine vehicles fed by natural gas. In fact, from an environmental point of view, natural gas is a better choice in comparison with traditional oil-based fuels, as it yields less CO2, NOx, and PM emissions per kilometer, than classical gasoline and diesel engines, due to its intrinsic characteristics. For this reason, natural gas vehicles can effectively contribute to the energy transition, especially in the short-medium term, as it can be in the energy production sector. Nonetheless, Italian institutions address most of the eco-incentives’ mechanism to promote hybrid and electric passenger vehicles, irrespective of the different types of fuel for the internal combustion engine. In this paper, a technical overview of the different available propulsion systems adopted in commercial vehicles is first presented. Then, the Italian passenger vehicle market is analyzed to have a clear picture of the Italian private transportation framework, as well as to provide a sound basis to evaluate to what extent the natural gas vehicles can contribute to the reduction of greenhouse gas emissions (GHG). We show that with the eco-incentives’ mechanism of the two-year period 2020-2021, which provides a maximum amount of €6500 specifically to electric vehicles, the resulting overall cost of the avoided CO2 is about 975 €/tCO2 for an average vehicle lifespan of 10 years. However, addressing natural gas vehicles in place of electric ones with an incentive amount of €1000, this cost-benefit ratio could increase of about 14

    Electrified vehicles have undergone great evolution during the last decade because of the increasing attention paid on environmental sustainability, greenhouse gas emissions and air pollution. Emission regulations are becoming increasingly tight, and governments have been allocating multiple funds to facilitate the spreading of the so-called green mobility. In this context, steering towards electrified solutions not only for passenger vehicles, but also for compact off-highway vehicles extensively employed, for instance, on construction sites located in urban areas, warehouses, and greenhouses, is essential even if seldom considered. Moreover, the electrification of compact off-highway machinery may allow manufacturers to increase their expertise in and lower the costs of these alternative solutions, while gathering useful data to be applied in bigger and more remunerative off-highway vehicles. In fact, while electric automobiles are as of now real alternatives for buyers, off-highway vehicles, regardless of the application, are mostly in the research and experimental phase, with few of them already on the market. This delay, in comparison with the passenger automotive industry, is caused by different factors, mostly related to the different tasks of off-highway vehicles in terms of duty cycles, productivity performance parameters and user acceptability. The aim of this paper is to give an overview of the many aspects of the electrification of compact off-highway vehicles, to highlight the key differences between on-highway and off-highway vehicles and to summarize in a single source of information the multiple solutions investigated by researchers and manufacturers
