Numerical prediction for many floating debris transported in city model due to tsunami-induced flows
A three-dimensional computational method based on multiphase modelling is
employed to predict the behaviors of floating tsunami debris in coastal residential
areas. The present computational method enables us to deal with the interactions between
free-surface flows and the movements of floating objects, as well as the collisions
among the objects and fixed structures. The present method was first applied to simple
stability problems of floating cylinders and then it was applied to the 1/250 scale tsunami
experiments. Finally, two types of numerical experiments were performed using larger number of
floating objects in more compli- cated conditions. As a result, it was shown that the present
method is effective to predict the behaviors of floating objects transported by tsunami
between buildings on non-uniform grand
surfaces
Fibromatosis of the Plantar Fascia: Diagnosis and Indications For Surgical Treatment
Plantar fibromatosis is a rare, benign lesion involving the plantar aponeurosis. Eleven patients (13 feet) underwent 24 operations, including local excision, wide excision, or complete plantar fasciectomy. Clinical results were evaluated retrospectively. There were no differences among the subgroups in postoperative complications. Two primary fasciectomies did not recur. Three of six revised fasciectomies, seven of nine wide excisions, and six of seven local excisions recurred. Our results indicate that recurrence of plantar fibromatosis after surgical resection can be reduced by aggressive initial surgical resection
Vibrio coralliilyticus Strain OCN008 Is an Etiological Agent of Acute Montipora White Syndrome
Identification of a pathogen is a critical first step in the epidemiology and subsequent management of a disease. A limited number of pathogens have been identified for diseases contributing to the global decline of coral populations. Here we describe Vibrio coralliilyticus strain OCN008, which induces acute Montipora white syndrome (aMWS), a tissue loss disease responsible for substantial mortality of the coral Montipora capitata in Ka ne‘ohe Bay, Hawai‘i. OCN008 was grown in pure culture, recreated signs of disease in experimentally infected corals, and could be recovered after infection. In addition, strains similar to OCN008 were isolated from diseased coral from the field but not from healthy M. capitata. OCN008 repeatedly induced the loss of healthy M. capitata tissue from fragments under laboratory conditions with a minimum infectious dose of between 107 and 108 CFU/ml of water. In contrast, Porites compressa was not infected by OCN008, indicating the host specificity of the pathogen. A decrease in water temperature from 27 to 23°C affected the time to disease onset, but the risk of infection was not significantly reduced. Temperature-dependent bleaching, which has been observed with the V. coralliilyticus type strain BAA-450, was not observed during infection with OCN008. A comparison of the OCN008 genome to the genomes of pathogenic V. coralliilyticus strains BAA-450 and P1 revealed similar virulence-associated genes and quorum-sensing systems. Despite this genetic similarity, infections of M. capitata by OCN008 do not follow the paradigm for V. coralliilyticus infections established by the type strain
The trpE Gene Negatively Regulates Differentiation of Heterocysts at the Level of Induction in Anabaena sp. Strain PCC 7120
Levels of 2-oxoglutarate (2-OG) reflect nitrogen status in many bacteria. In heterocystous cyanobacteria, a spike in the 2-OG level occurs shortly after the removal of combined nitrogen from cultures and is an integral part of the induction of heterocyst differentiation. In this work, deletion of one of the two annotated trpE genes in Anabaena sp. strain PCC 7120 resulted in a spike in the 2-OG level and subsequent differentiation of a wild-type pattern of heterocysts when filaments of the mutant were transferred from growth on ammonia to growth on nitrate. In contrast, 2-OG levels were unaffected in the wild type, which did not differentiate under the same conditions. An inverted-repeat sequence located upstream of trpE bound a central regulator of differentiation, HetR, in vitro and was necessary for HetR-dependent transcription of a reporter fusion and complementation of the mutant phenotype in vivo. Functional complementation of the mutant phenotype with the addition of tryptophan suggested that levels of tryptophan, rather than the demonstrated anthranilate synthase activity of TrpE, mediated the developmental response of the wild type to nitrate. A comparison of buoy meteorological systems
During May and June 2000, an intercomparison was made of buoy meteorological
systems from the Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution (WHOI), the National Oceanographic
and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA), Pacific Marine Environmental Laboratory (PMEL),
and the Japanese Marine Science and Technology Center (JAMSTEC). Two WHOI systems
mounted on a 3 m discus buoy, two PMEL systems mounted on separate buoy tower tops and
one JAMSTEC system mounted on a wooden platform were lined parallel to, and 25 m from
Nantucket Sound in Massachusetts. All systems used R. M. Young propeller anemometers,
Rotronic relative humidity and air temperature sensors and Eppley short-wave radiation sensors.
The PMEL and WHOI systems used R. M.Young self-siphoning rain gauges, while the
JAMSTEC system used a Scientific Technology ORG-115 optical rain gauge. The PMEL and
WHOI systems included an Eppley PIR long-wave sensor, while the JAMSTEC had no longwave
sensor. The WHOI system used an AIR DB-1A barometric pressure sensor. PMEL and
JAMSTEC systems used Paroscientific Digiquartz sensors. The Geophysical Instruments and
Measurements Group (GIM) from Brookhaven National Laboratory (BNL) installed two
Portable Radiation Package (PRP) systems that include Eppley short-wave and long-wave
sensors on a platform near the site.
It was apparent from the data that for most of the sensors, the correlation between data
sets was better than the absolute agreement between them. The conclusions made were that the
sensors and associated electronics from the three different laboratories performed comparably.Funding was provided by the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration

Intrapleural hypotonic cisplatin treatment for malignant pleural effusion in 80 patients with non-small-cell lung cancer: a multi-institutional phase II trial
To assess the effect and toxicity of hypotonic cisplatin treatment (HPT) consisting of the intrapleural administration of cisplatin in distilled water for malignant pleural effusion in patients with non-small-cell lung cancer (NSCLC). Non-small-cell lung cancer patients with cytologically proven and previously untreated malignant pleural effusion were enrolled into this study. Firstly, the lung was fully re-expanded by a tube thoracostomy, and then 25 mg cisplatin in 500 ml of distilled water was instilled through a chest tube and then the tube was clamped. After 1 h, the tube was declamped and allowed to drain. The chest tube was removed when the pleural effusion volume decreased to 200 ml or less per day. A complete response (CR) was considered to occur when the pleural effusion disappeared. A partial response (PR) was determined to occur when the volume of pleural effusion remained under ¼ of hemithorax. The response at 4 weeks was evaluated by an extramural review. Out of 84 patients enrolled from February 1998 to August 2002, 80 patients were eligible and analysed in the present study. The toxicity of HPT was acceptable. Neither a haematological toxicity of any grade nor grade 4 nonhaematological toxicity was observed. Grade 3 nonhaematological toxicities were observed, including nausea (4%), vomiting (3%), pyothorax (1%) and dyspnoea (1%). The median time of drainage from HTP was 4 days. Twenty-seven (34%) and 39 (49%) patients achieved CR and PR, respectively, for an overall response rate of 83% (95% confidence interval, 74–91%). The median duration of the response was 206 days. The median survival time of all patients was 239 days. Hypotonic cisplatin treatment for malignant pleural effusion of NSCLC is therefore considered to be feasible and effective. A phase III study of HPT is thus warranted

hyperbolic spaces. We prove the Sforza formula for the volume of an arbitrary
tetrahedron in and . We also present some results, which provide a
solution for Seidel problem on the volume of non-Euclidean tetrahedron.
Finally, we consider a convex hyperbolic quadrilateral inscribed in a circle,
horocycle or one branch of equidistant curve. This is a natural hyperbolic
analog of the cyclic quadrilateral in the Euclidean plane. We find a few
versions of the Brahmagupta formula for the area of such quadrilateral. We also
