Concept of temperature in multi-horizon spacetimes: Analysis of Schwarzschild-De Sitter metric
In case of spacetimes with single horizon, there exist several
well-established procedures for relating the surface gravity of the horizon to
a thermodynamic temperature. Such procedures, however, cannot be extended in a
straightforward manner when a spacetime has multiple horizons. In particular,
it is not clear whether there exists a notion of global temperature
characterizing the multi-horizon spacetimes. We examine the conditions under
which a global temperature can exist for a spacetime with two horizons using
the example of Schwarzschild-De Sitter (SDS) spacetime. We systematically
extend different procedures (like the expectation value of stress tensor,
response of particle detectors, periodicity in the Euclidean time etc.) for
identifying a temperature in the case of spacetimes with single horizon to the
SDS spacetime. This analysis is facilitated by using a global coordinate chart
which covers the entire SDS manifold. We find that all the procedures lead to a
consistent picture characterized by the following features: (a) In general, SDS
spacetime behaves like a non-equilibrium system characterized by two
temperatures. (b) It is not possible to associate a global temperature with SDS
spacetime except when the ratio of the two surface gravities is rational (c)
Even when the ratio of the two surface gravities is rational, the thermal
nature depends on the coordinate chart used. There exists a global coordinate
chart in which there is global equilibrium temperature while there exist other
charts in which SDS behaves as though it has two different temperatures. The
coordinate dependence of the thermal nature is reminiscent of the flat
spacetime in Minkowski and Rindler coordinate charts. The implications are

Oviposição do curuquerê e alimentação de suas lagartas neonatas em algodoeiros tratados com caulim
Resumo: O objetivo deste trabalho foi avaliar a capacidade do caulim de afetar a oviposição e a alimentação de Alabama argillacea (Lepidoptera: Noctuidae) em algodoeiro. Determinou-se a preferência de oviposição, a viabilidade de ovos e o consumo das lagartas de primeiro instar de A. argillacea, em folhas de algodão tratadas ou não com caulim. A preferência de oviposição foi determinada por teste de escolha e confinamento, em delineamento experimental de blocos ao acaso, em arranjo fatorial 2x7, representado pelos tratamentos com caulim em água destilada (60 g L-1) ou somente água destilada (testemunha), e pela avaliação de sete estruturas vegetais da planta. O consumo pelas lagartas de primeiro instar foi determinado em delineamento experimental inteiramente casualizado, em arranjo fatorial 2x4, representado pelo tratamento com caulim em água destilada, pela testemunha e pelos quatro períodos de observação (6, 12, 24 e 48 horas). A oviposição das mariposas do curuquerê-do-algodoeiro foi reduzida nas plantas de algodão tratadas com caulim; no entanto, a viabilidade dos ovos não foi afetada. A folha da haste foi a estrutura preferida para oviposição. A sobrevivência e o consumo de lagartas de primeiro instar do curuquerê são menores nas plantas de algodão tratadas com caulim

ELYTRAL PUNCTURES: A RAPID, RELIABLE METHOD FOR MARKING COLORADO POTATO BEETLE
AbstractA simple, inexpensive, permanent method for individually marking Colorado potato beetle is presented. The method consists of puncturing the elytra within the cream-colored longitudinal bands using a minuten nadeln; the wound response produces intense melanization at the point of puncture. Division of a band into three zones, each potentially receiving a dot, produces an octal digit. If all eight bands are employed, more than 16 million beetles can be uniquely marked. No significant survival effects of marking were seen in teneral, post-teneral, or post-diapause adult beetles. Propensity to fly in mid-summer beetles was generally unaffected by marking. Probabilities of mismarking and misreading are negligible if sufficient care is employed.</jats:p
Impacts of seasonal kaolin particle films on apple pest management
AbstractThe impact of multiple applications of the kaolin-based particle film M96-018 on the population density of selected pests of apple, Malus domestica (Borkh) (Rosaceae), and their natural enemy populations were measured in several Washington State orchards from 1997 to 1999. Densities of western tentiform leafminer, Phyllonorycter elmaella (Doganlar and Mutuura) (Lepidoptera: Gracillariidae), were significantly higher and percent parasitism was generally lower in treated plots than in untreated plots. The effect of M96-018 on green aphids (Aphis spp.) (Hemiptera: Aphididae) was variable between orchards; however, populations of rosy apple aphid, Dysaphis plantaginea Passerini (Hemiptera: Aphididae), were higher in treated plots than in untreated plots. M96-018 reduced the mean density of the white apple leafhopper, Typhlocyba pomaria (McAtee) (Hemiptera: Cicadellidae), and the density of spiders (Araneae) compared with untreated plots. Fruit injury by codling moth, Cydia pomonella (L.), and fruittree leafroller, Archips argyrospilus (Walker) (Lepidoptera: Tortricidae), was significantly reduced in the treated plots compared with the untreated plots. The effect of M96-018 on the mullein bug, Campylomma verbasci (Meyer) (Hemiptera: Miridae), was variable between orchards and years. Stink bug (Hemiptera: Pentatomidae) density and related fruit injury were unaffected by M96-018. Fruit infestation by San Jose scale, Quadraspidiotus perniciosus (Comstock) (Hemiptera: Diaspididae), was significantly higher in treated plots than in untreated plots. Discontinuing applications of M96-018 at mid-season reduced the number of aphid-infested leaves and increased fruit injury by leafroller compared with a full-season program. No differences in pest densities occurred in plots treated for one versus two consecutive years; however, the density of phytophagous mites (Acari: Tetranychidae) was significantly higher the subsequent year after plots were treated with M96-018. Further studies are needed to elucidate how these disruptive impacts of particle films can be minimized.</jats:p
