Cladding strategies for building-integrated photovoltaics
Photovoltaic cladding on the surfaces of commercial buildings has the potential for considerable reductions in carbon emissions due to embedded renewable power generation displacing conventional power utilization. In this paper, a model is described for the optimization of photovoltaic cladding densities on commercial building surfaces. The model uses a modified form of the ‘fill factor’ method for photovoltaic power supply coupled to new regression-based procedures for power demand estimation. An optimization is included based on a defined ‘mean index of satisfaction’ for matched power supply and demand (i.e., zero power exportation to the grid). The mean index of satisfaction directly translates to the reduction in carbon emission that might be expected over conventional power use. On clear days throughout the year, reductions of conventional power use of at least 60% can be achieved with an optimum cladding pattern targeted to lighting and small power load demands
Space Trajectory Error Analysis Program (STEAP) for halo orbit missions. Volume 2: Programmer's manual
The six month effort was responsible for the development, test, conversion, and documentation of computer software for the mission analysis of missions to halo orbits about libration points in the earth-sun system. The software consisting of two programs called NOMNAL and ERRAN is part of the Space Trajectories Error Analysis Programs. The program NOMNAL targets a transfer trajectory from earth on a given launch date to a specified halo orbit on a required arrival date. Either impulsive or finite thrust insertion maneuvers into halo orbit are permitted by the program. The transfer trajectory is consistent with a realistic launch profile input by the user. The second program ERRAN conducts error analyses of the targeted transfer trajectory. Measurements including range, doppler, star-planet angles, and apparent planet diameter are processed in a Kalman-Schmidt filter to determine the trajectory knowledge uncertainty
The development and application of aerodynamic uncertainties: And flight test verification for the space shuttle orbiter
The approach used in establishing the predicted aerodynamic uncertainties and the process used in applying these uncertainties during the design of the Orbiter flight control system and the entry trajectories are presented. The flight test program that was designed to verify the stability and control derivatives with a minimum of test flights is presented and a comparison of preflight predictions with preliminary flight test results is made. It is concluded that the approach used for the Orbiter is applicable to future programs where testing is limited due to time constraints or funding
A Preliminary Evaluation of Supersonic Transport Category Vehicle Operations in the National Airspace System
Several public sector businesses and government agencies, including the National Aeronautics and Space Administration are currently working on solving key technological barriers that must be overcome in order to realize the vision of low-boom supersonic flights conducted over land. However, once these challenges are met, the manner in which this class of aircraft is integrated in the National Airspace System may become a potential constraint due to the significant environmental, efficiency, and economic repercussions that their integration may cause. Background research was performed on historic supersonic operations in the National Airspace System, including both flight deck procedures and air traffic controller procedures. Using this information, an experiment was created to test some of these historic procedures in a current-day, emerging Next Generation Air Transportation System (NextGen) environment and observe the interactions between commercial supersonic transport aircraft and modern-day air traffic. Data was gathered through batch simulations of supersonic commercial transport category aircraft operating in present-day traffic scenarios as a base-lining study to identify the magnitude of the integration problems and begin the exploration of new air traffic management technologies and architectures which will be needed to seamlessly integrate subsonic and supersonic transport aircraft operations. The data gathered include information about encounters between subsonic and supersonic aircraft that may occur when supersonic commercial transport aircraft are integrated into the National Airspace System, as well as flight time data. This initial investigation is being used to inform the creation and refinement of a preliminary Concept of Operations and for the subsequent development of technologies that will enable overland supersonic flight
Imaging Photon Lattice States by Scanning Defect Microscopy
Microwave photons inside lattices of coupled resonators and superconducting
qubits can exhibit surprising matter-like behavior. Realizing such open-system
quantum simulators presents an experimental challenge and requires new tools
and measurement techniques. Here, we introduce Scanning Defect Microscopy as
one such tool and illustrate its use in mapping the normal-mode structure of
microwave photons inside a 49-site Kagome lattice of coplanar waveguide
resonators. Scanning is accomplished by moving a probe equipped with a sapphire
tip across the lattice. This locally perturbs resonator frequencies and induces
shifts of the lattice resonance frequencies which we determine by measuring the
transmission spectrum. From the magnitude of mode shifts we can reconstruct
photon field amplitudes at each lattice site and thus create spatial images of
the photon-lattice normal modes
Whole home exercise intervention for depression in older care home residents (the OPERA study) : a process evaluation
Background:
The ‘Older People’s Exercise intervention in Residential and nursing Accommodation’ (OPERA) cluster randomised trial evaluated the impact of training for care home staff together with twice-weekly, physiotherapist-led exercise classes on depressive symptoms in care home residents, but found no effect. We report a process evaluation exploring potential explanations for the lack of effect.
Methods:
The OPERA trial included over 1,000 residents in 78 care homes in the UK. We used a mixed methods approach including quantitative data collected from all homes. In eight case study homes, we carried out repeated periods of observation and interviews with residents, care staff and managers. At the end of the intervention, we held focus groups with OPERA research staff. We reported our first findings before the trial outcome was known.
Results:
Homes showed large variations in activity at baseline and throughout the trial. Overall attendance rate at the group exercise sessions was low (50%). We considered two issues that might explain the negative outcome: whether the intervention changed the culture of the homes, and whether the residents engaged with the intervention. We found low levels of staff training, few home champions for the intervention and a culture that prioritised protecting residents from harm over encouraging activity. The trial team delivered 3,191 exercise groups but only 36% of participants attended at least 1 group per week and depressed residents attended significantly fewer groups than those who were not depressed. Residents were very frail and therefore most groups only included seated exercises.
Conclusions:
The intervention did not change the culture of the homes and, in the case study homes, activity levels did not change outside the exercise groups. Residents did not engage in the exercise groups at a sufficient level, and this was particularly true for those with depressive symptoms at baseline. The physical and mental frailty of care home residents may make it impossible to deliver a sufficiently intense exercise intervention to impact on depressive symptoms
Low Cost Butane Propulsion Systems for Small Spacecraft
This paper describes the work performed at the Surrey Space Centre to produce low cost propulsion systems for small spacecraft with relatively low velocity-change (ÄV) requirements. Traditionally, cold gas nitrogen systems have been used for this type of application, however these have high storage volume requirements which can be a problem given the typical volume constraints of small spacecraft. An alternative solution is to use liquefied gases, which store as liquids and hence have reasonable densities, whilst still being suitable for use in a cold gas thruster. Thus, liquefied butane gas has been selected as our propellant of choice: Although it has slightly lower specific impulse than nitrogen, it has a significantly higher storage density, and, conveniently, it stores at a very low pressure, hence no pressure-regulation system is required. On 28th June 2000 Surrey launched its first nano-satellite: SNAP-1. This spacecraft was equipped with a small cold gas propulsion system utilising 32.6 grams of butane propellant, which, since launch, has been used to raise the spacecraft\u27s semi-major axis by over 3 kilometres. In this paper, we describe SNAP-1’s propulsion system, highlighting its low-cost features. Telemetry data are used to illustrate orbital control operations, and to derive an overall mission specific impulse. Surrey Satellite Technology Ltd (SSTL) are currently under contract to build three Earth-observation spacecraft for a Disaster Monitoring Constellation (DMC). Each spacecraft will weigh approx 100 kg and have a ÄV requirement of 10 m/s. A new butane system is being designed and manufactured to meet the requirements of these spacecraft. The system is based very much on the flight heritage of the SNAP-1 system, but with the addition of greater propellant storage capacity. The lessons learnt from SNAP-1 operations are reviewed and the resulting design improvements for the DMC propulsion system are detailed
