Reduced model for H-mode sustainment in unfavorable drift configuration in ASDEX Upgrade
A recently developed reduced model of H-mode sustainment based on
interchange-drift-Alfv\'en turbulence description in the vicinity of the
separatrix matching experimental observations in ASDEX Upgrade has been
extended to experiments with the unfavorable drift. The combination
with the theory of the magnetic-shear-induced Reynolds stress offers a
possibility to quantitatively explain the phenomena. The extension of the
Reynolds stress estimate in the reduced model via the magnetic shear
contribution is able to reproduce the strong asymmetry in the access conditions
depending on the ion drift orientation in agreement with
experimental observations. The Reynolds stress profile asymmetry predicted by
the magnetic shear model is further extended by comparison with GRILLIX and
GENE-X simulations matched with comparable experiments in realistic X-point
geometry. The predictions of the radial electric field well depth and its
difference between the favorable and unfavorable configurations at the same
heating power from the extended model also show consistency with experimental
measurements.Comment: Submitted to Nuclear Fusio

Exactly solvable path integral for open cavities in terms of quasinormal modes
We evaluate the finite-temperature Euclidean phase-space path integral for
the generating functional of a scalar field inside a leaky cavity. Provided the
source is confined to the cavity, one can first of all integrate out the fields
on the outside to obtain an effective action for the cavity alone.
Subsequently, one uses an expansion of the cavity field in terms of its
quasinormal modes (QNMs)-the exact, exponentially damped eigenstates of the
classical evolution operator, which previously have been shown to be complete
for a large class of models. Dissipation causes the effective cavity action to
be nondiagonal in the QNM basis. The inversion of this action matrix inherent
in the Gaussian path integral to obtain the generating functional is therefore
nontrivial, but can be accomplished by invoking a novel QNM sum rule. The
results are consistent with those obtained previously using canonical
quantization.Comment: REVTeX, 26 pages, submitted to Phys. Rev.
Upgrade of the edge Charge Exchange Recombination Spectroscopy system at the High Field Side of ASDEX Upgrade
The upgrade of the high field side (HFS) edge charge exchange recombination spectroscopy (CXRS) system of ASDEX Upgrade is presented. This diagnostic provides temperature, rotation and radiance measurements of impurity species by taking advantage of the gas puff based CXRS technique (GP-CXRS). The system is formed by a fast piezoelectric valve, that injects thermal neutrals into the plasma, and two optical heads. The localized gas injection together with properly aligned lines of sights (LOS) lead to a high spatial resolution of 5–19 mm. Fast gas puff modulation allows a precise subtraction of the passive part of the signal. The existing poloidal optical head has been replaced with a new one to increase the radial resolution. The number of lines of sight (LOS) of the poloidal optical head has been increased from 8 to 16 covering around 7 cm of the plasma edge at the HFS. The same radial range is also viewed by a toroidal optical head. The neutral deposition, needed to calculate the impurity density profile, has been modelled using the FIDASIM code. A realistic gas puff geometry has been implemented in the code. The first measurements of impurity temperature, rotation and radiance utilizing the upgraded diagnostic are presented.Universidad de Sevilla PPITUS 2017EUROfusion Consortium 633053H2020 Marie-Skłodowska Curie programme (Grant No. 708257)Spanish Ministry of Economy and Competitiveness (Grant No. FJCI-201422139
