Dynamical tunneling in optical cavities
The lifetime of whispering gallery modes in a dielectric cavity with a
metallic inclusion is shown to fluctuate by orders of magnitude when size and
location of the inclusion are varied. We ascribe these fluctuations to
tunneling transitions between resonances quantized in different regions of
phase space. This interpretation is confirmed by a comparison of the classical
phase space structure with the Husimi distribution of the resonant modes. A
model Hamiltonian is introduced that describes the phenomenon and shows that it
can be expected in a more general class of systems.Comment: 8 pages LaTeX with 5 postscript figure
Highly nonclassical photon statistics in parametric down conversion
We use photon counters to obtain the joint photon counting statistics from
twin-beam non-degenerate parametric down conversion, and we demonstrate
directly, and with no auxiliary assumptions, that these twin beams are
nonclassical
Origin of charge density at LaAlO3-on-SrTiO3 hetero-interfaces; possibility of intrinsic doping
As discovered by Ohtomo et al., a large sheet charge density with high
mobility exists at the interface between SrTiO3 and LaAlO3. Based on transport,
spectroscopic and oxygen-annealing experiments, we conclude that extrinsic
defects in the form of oxygen vacancies introduced by the pulsed laser
deposition process used by all researchers to date to make these samples is the
source of the large carrier densities. Annealing experiments show a limiting
carrier density. We also present a model that explains the high mobility based
on carrier redistribution due to an increased dielectric constant.Comment: 14 pages, 3 figures, 1 table; accepted for publication in Phys. Rev.

Development of high critical current density in multifilamentary round-wire Bi2Sr2CaCu2O8+x by strong overdoping
Bi2Sr2CaCu2O8+x is the only cuprate superconductor that can be made into a
round-wire conductor form with a high enough critical current density Jc for
applications. Here we show that the Jc(5 T,4.2 K) of such Ag-sheathed
filamentary wires can be doubled to more than 1.4x10^5 A/cm^2 by low
temperature oxygenation. Careful analysis shows that the improved performance
is associated with a 12 K reduction in transition temperature Tc to 80 K and a
significant enhancement in intergranular connectivity. In spite of the
macroscopically untextured nature of the wire, overdoping is highly effective
in producing high Jc values.Comment: 4 figure
The Haldane gap for the S=2 antiferromagnetic Heisenberg chain revisited
Using the density matrix renormalization group (DMRG) technique, we carry out
a large scale numerical calculation for the S=2 antiferromagnetic Heisenberg
chain. Performing systematic scaling analysis for both the chain length and
the number of optimal states kept in the iterations , the Haldane gap
is estimated accurately as . Our systematic
analysis for the S=2 chains not only ends the controversies arising from
various DMRG calculations and Monte Carlo simulations, but also sheds light on
how to obtain reliable results from the DMRG calculations for other complicated
systems.Comment: 4 pages and 1 figur
Apparent finite-size effects in the dynamics of supercooled liquids
Molecular dynamics simulations are performed for a supercooled simple liquid
with changing the system size from N=108 to to examine possible
finite-size effects. Although almost no systematic deviation is detected in the
static pair correlation functions, it is demonstrated that the structural
relaxation in a small system becomes considerably slower than that in
larger systems for temperatures below at which the size of the
cooperative particle motions becomes comparable to the unit cell length of the
small system. The discrepancy increases with decreasing temperature.Comment: 4 pages 5 figure
Elementary Excitations of Heisenberg Ferrimagnetic Spin Chains
We numerically investigate elementary excitations of the Heisenberg
alternating-spin chains with two kinds of spins 1 and 1/2 antiferromagnetically
coupled to each other. Employing a recently developed efficient Monte Carlo
technique as well as an exact diagonalization method, we verify the spin-wave
argument that the model exhibits two distinct excitations from the ground state
which are gapless and gapped. The gapless branch shows a quadratic dispersion
in the small-momentum region, which is of ferromagnetic type. With the
intention of elucidating the physical mechanism of both excitations, we make a
perturbation approach from the decoupled-dimer limit. The gapless branch is
directly related to spin 1's, while the gapped branch originates from
cooperation of the two kinds of spins.Comment: 7 pages, 7 Postscript figures, RevTe
Critical Scale-invariance in Healthy Human Heart Rate
We demonstrate the robust scale-invariance in the probability density
function (PDF) of detrended healthy human heart rate increments, which is
preserved not only in a quiescent condition, but also in a dynamic state where
the mean level of heart rate is dramatically changing. This scale-independent
and fractal structure is markedly different from the scale-dependent PDF
evolution observed in a turbulent-like, cascade heart rate model. These results
strongly support the view that healthy human heart rate is controlled to
converge continually to a critical state.Comment: 9 pages, 3 figures. Phys. Rev. Lett., to appear (2004
Influence of phonons on exciton-photon interaction and photon statistics of a quantum dot
In this paper, we investigate, phonon effects on the optical properties of a
spherical quantum dot. For this purpose, we consider the interaction of a
spherical quantum dot with classical and quantum fields while the exciton of
quantum dot interacts with a solid state reservoir. We show that phonons
strongly affect the Rabi oscillations and optical coherence on first
picoseconds of dynamics. We consider the quantum statistics of emitted photons
by quantum dot and we show that these photons are anti-bunched and obey the
sub-Poissonian statistics. In addition, we examine the effects of detuning and
interaction of quantum dot with the cavity mode on optical coherence of energy
levels. The effects of detuning and interaction of quantum dot with cavity mode
on optical coherence of energy levels are compared to the effects of its
interaction with classical pulse
Quantized gravitational waves in the Milne universe
The quantization of gravitational waves in the Milne universe is discussed.
The relation between positive frequency functions of the gravitational waves in
the Milne universe and those in the Minkowski universe is clarified.
Implications to the one-bubble open inflation scenario are also discussed.Comment: 26 pages, 1 figure, revtex. submitted to Phys. Rev. D1
