Sacramento Municipal Utility District (SMUD) ist weltweit gesehen vielleicht das fortschrittlichste Stadtwerk. Angetrieben von einem kreativen und durchsetzungsfaehigen Stadtwerkechef werden alle Anstrengungen unternommen, um bis zum Jahr 2000 den Ersatz allein durch Massnahmen auf der Nachfrageseite (demand-side management) zu schaffen. Der Bericht des Oeko-Instituts beruecksichtigt dabei die wesentlichen Ergebnis- und Planungsdokumente von SMUD bis Ende 1994. Der Hauptgrund fuer SMUD liegt in der Betriebswirtschaftlichen Vorteilhaftigkeit der meisten Massnahmen, die vor allem auf die gezielte Senkung der Spitzlastnachfrage im Sommer abzielen. Under the leadership of a creative and assertive director the utility is undertaking every effort to compensate solely by demand-side management for the already settled decommissioning of the municipality's own nuclear power plant by the year 2000. The present report by Oeko-Institut 'takes account of SMUD's principal and planning documents up to end-1994. SMUD's main motive for its activities lies in the private economic benefit of most of the measures. These are chiefly designed to lower peak load demand in the summer.
