Magnetic and electronic structures of superconducting RuSrGdCuO
The coexistence of ferromagnetism and superconductivity in
RuSrGdCuO was reported both from experiments (by Tallon et. al.)
and first-principles calculations (by Pickett et. al.). Here we report that our
first-principles full-potential linearized augmented plane wave (FLAPW)
calculations, employing the precise crystal structure with structural
distortions (i.e., RuO rotations) determined by neutron diffraction,
demonstrate that antiferromagnetic ordering of the Ru moments is energetically
favored over the previously proposed ferromagnetic ordering. Our results are
consistent with recently performed magnetic neutron diffraction experiments
(Lynn et. al). Ru states, which are responsible for the magnetism,
have only a very small interaction with Cu states, which results in a
small exchange splitting of these states. The Fermi surface, characterized by
strongly hybridized orbitals, has nesting features similar to those
in the two-dimensional high cuprate superconductors.Comment: 6 pages,6 figures, accepted for publication in Phys. Rev.
Unary Pushdown Automata and Straight-Line Programs
We consider decision problems for deterministic pushdown automata over a
unary alphabet (udpda, for short). Udpda are a simple computation model that
accept exactly the unary regular languages, but can be exponentially more
succinct than finite-state automata. We complete the complexity landscape for
udpda by showing that emptiness (and thus universality) is P-hard, equivalence
and compressed membership problems are P-complete, and inclusion is
coNP-complete. Our upper bounds are based on a translation theorem between
udpda and straight-line programs over the binary alphabet (SLPs). We show that
the characteristic sequence of any udpda can be represented as a pair of
SLPs---one for the prefix, one for the lasso---that have size linear in the
size of the udpda and can be computed in polynomial time. Hence, decision
problems on udpda are reduced to decision problems on SLPs. Conversely, any SLP
can be converted in logarithmic space into a udpda, and this forms the basis
for our lower bound proofs. We show coNP-hardness of the ordered matching
problem for SLPs, from which we derive coNP-hardness for inclusion. In
addition, we complete the complexity landscape for unary nondeterministic
pushdown automata by showing that the universality problem is -hard, using a new class of integer expressions. Our techniques have
applications beyond udpda. We show that our results imply -completeness for a natural fragment of Presburger arithmetic and coNP lower
bounds for compressed matching problems with one-character wildcards

Algorithmic Complexity for Short Binary Strings Applied to Psychology: A Primer
Since human randomness production has been studied and widely used to assess
executive functions (especially inhibition), many measures have been suggested
to assess the degree to which a sequence is random-like. However, each of them
focuses on one feature of randomness, leading authors to have to use multiple
measures. Here we describe and advocate for the use of the accepted universal
measure for randomness based on algorithmic complexity, by means of a novel
previously presented technique using the the definition of algorithmic
probability. A re-analysis of the classical Radio Zenith data in the light of
the proposed measure and methodology is provided as a study case of an

Electrostatic potential in a superconductor
The electrostatic potential in a superconductor is studied. To this end
Bardeen's extension of the Ginzburg-Landau theory to low temperatures is used
to derive three Ginzburg-Landau equations - the Maxwell equation for the vector
potential, the Schroedinger equation for the wave function and the Poisson
equation for the electrostatic potential. The electrostatic and the
thermodynamic potential compensate each other to a great extent resulting into
an effective potential acting on the superconducting condensate. For the
Abrikosov vortex lattice in Niobium, numerical solutions are presented and the
different contributions to the electrostatic potential and the related charge

Interaction of mammalian cells with polymorphonuclear leukocytes: Relative sensitivity to monolayer disruption and killing
Monolayers of murine fibrosarcoma cells that had been treated either with histone-opsonized streptococci, histone-opsonized Candida globerata , or lipoteichoic acid-anti-lipoteichoic acid complexes underwent disruption when incubated with human polymorphonuclear leukocytes (PMNs). Although the architecture of the monolayers was destroyed, the target cells were not killed. The destruction of the monolayers was totally inhibited by proteinase inhibitors, suggesting that the detachment of the cells from the monolayers and aggregation in suspension were induced by proteinases released from the activated PMNs. Monolayers of normal endothelial cells and fibroblasts were much more resistant to the monolayer-disrupting effects of the PMNs than were the fibrosarcoma cells. Although the fibrosarcoma cells were resistant to killing by PMNs, killing was promoted by the addition of sodium azide (a catalase inhibitor). This suggests that the failure of the PMNs to kill the target cells was due to catalase inhibition of the hydrogen peroxide produced by the activated PMNs. Target cell killing that occurred in the presence of sodium azide was reduced by the addition of a “cocktail” containing methionine, histidine, and deferoxamine mesylate, suggesting that hydroxyl radicals but not myeloperoxidase-catalayzed products were responsible for cell killing. The relative ease with which the murine fibrosarcoma cells can be released from their substratum by the action of PMNs, coupled with their insensitivity to PMN-mediated killing, may explain why the presence of large numbers of PMNs at the site of tumors produced in experimental animals by the fibrosarcoma cells is associated with an unfavorable outcome.Peer Reviewedhttp://deepblue.lib.umich.edu/bitstream/2027.42/44503/1/10753_2004_Article_BF00916759.pd
Lysophosphatidylcholine as an adjuvant for lentiviral vector mediated gene transfer to airway epithelium: effect of acyl chain length
Extent: 11p.Background Poor gene transfer efficiency has been a major problem in developing an effective gene therapy for cystic fibrosis (CF) airway disease. Lysophosphatidylcholine (LPC), a natural airway surfactant, can enhance viral gene transfer in animal models. We examined the electrophysiological and physical effect of airway pre-treatment with variants of LPC on lentiviral (LV) vector gene transfer efficiency in murine nasal airways in vivo. Methods Gene transfer was assessed after 1 week following nasal instillations of a VSV-G pseudotype LV vector pre-treated with a low and high dose of LPC variants. The electrophysiological effects of a range of LPC variants were assessed by nasal transepithelial potential difference measurements (TPD) to determine tight junction permeability. Any physical changes to the epithelium from administration of the LPC variants were noted by histological methods in airway tissue harvested after 1 hour. Results Gene transduction was significantly greater compared to control (PBS) for our standard LPC (palmitoyl/stearoyl mixture) treatment and for the majority of the other LPC variants with longer acyl chain lengths. The LPC variant heptadecanoyl also produced significantly greater LV gene transfer compared to our standard LPC mixture. LV gene transfer and the transepithelial depolarization produced by the 0.1% LPC variants at 1 hour were strongly correlated (r2 = 0.94), but at the 1% concentration the correlation was less strong (r2 = 0.59). LPC variants that displayed minor to moderate levels of disruption to the airway epithelium were clearly associated with higher LV gene transfer. Conclusions These findings show the LPC variants effect on airway barrier function and their correlation to the effectiveness of gene expression. The enhanced expression produced by a number of LPC variants should provide new options for preclinical development of efficient airway gene transfer techniques.Patricia Cmielewski, Don S. "What Do They Want Me To Say?" The hidden curriculum at work in the medical school selection process: a qualitative study
<p>Abstract</p> <p>Background</p> <p>There has been little study of the role of the essay question in selection for medical school. The purpose of this study was to obtain a better understanding of how applicants approached the essay questions used in selection at our medical school in 2007.</p> <p>Methods</p> <p>The authors conducted a qualitative analysis of 210 essays written as part of the medical school admissions process, and developed a conceptual framework to describe the relationships, ideas and concepts observed in the data.</p> <p>Results</p> <p>Findings of this analysis were confirmed in interviews with applicants and assessors. Analysis revealed a tension between "genuine" and "expected" responses that we believe applicants experience when choosing how to answer questions in the admissions process. A theory named "What do they want me to say?" was developed to describe the ways in which applicants modulate their responses to conform to their expectations of the selection process; the elements of this theory were confirmed in interviews with applicants and assessors.</p> <p>Conclusions</p> <p>This work suggests the existence of a "hidden curriculum of admissions" and demonstrates that the process of selection has a strong influence on applicant response. This paper suggests ways that selection might be modified to address this effect. Studies such as this can help us to appreciate the unintended consequences of admissions processes and can identify ways to make the selection process more consistent, transparent and fair.</p
