    Seismic Stratigraphy and Reservoir Characterization of ‘E’ Field Sediments: Inferences from South-Eastern Late Miocene - Pliocene Records, Offshore Niger Delta

    Studies of Late Miocene – Pliocene continental shelf and slopes sediments on the south-eastern continental margin, Niger Delta (a broad region from the shelf – slope break extending to the ultra-deep waters: > 1500m), have revealed markedly different responses to sea level fluctuations. Significant features of the stratigraphy include  siliciclastic-dominated facies consisting principally of one or more of the following genetic types: deltaic distributary mouth bars, channel and shoreface sands, barrier beach, shelf and offshore turbidites. These sands are Late Miocene – Early Pliocene in age and were deposited in deep water settings on the slope of the ‘Y’ field by a range of depositional processes that include slumps, debris flows and turbidity currents. Most of these sands could be interpreted to relate to periods of base level fall, if not Global Eustatic lowstands. Working within a sequence stratigraphic framework, eight (8) sequences have been delineated on the basis of reflection termination patterns. The major sequences were related to sea level fall during which the shelf was exposed to erosion. A cross section of the stratigraphic correlation drawn showed that the horizons are laterally continuous. However, pinch-out channel sands and lenticular sandbodies are evident. The recognition of depositional surfaces on the stratigraphic cross-sections allows subdivision of the stratigraphy into systems tracts: HST, FSST, TST and LST. On the seismic package, three (3) main seismic surfaces with distinct chronostratigraphic expressions are evident. They include non-marine, marine and fault plane surfaces. In addition, clinoform strata in the basin-margin setting of this field have relatively flat topsets and sloping clinoforms. On the shelf settings, a composite surface exists consisting of the merged sequence boundary, otherwise marked and interpreted as 4.2 Ma sequence boundary, transgressive surface (TS) and maximum flooding surface (MFS), unless separated by an incised valley fill (IVF). In the ‘Y’ field, failure, slumping and re-sedimentation processes that cause base-of-slope thickening in response to gravity and geotropic flows modify the slope. Furthermore, within the same basinal setting, affected by the same sea level rise, the facies boundaries are diachronous.     Endoparasites of Bucks Raised under Intensive and Semi-Intensive System

    An investigation was carried out on bucks in intensive and semi-intensive systems of management. A total of sixteen (16) bucks (male goats) were randomly purchased for the study. The animals were divided into four groups of four animals per treatment and fed Panicum maximum, Gliricidia sepium for Treatment 1 while Treatment 2 were fed Panicum maximum, Gliricidia sepium plus concentrates. Those in T3 were fed concentrate and allowed to graze and T4 were fed Panicum maximum and were also allowed to forage. The result showed significant difference (P<0.05) in infestations of strongyles amongst the treatments

    Polycyclic Aromatic Hydrocarbon-degrading Bacteria from Aviation Fuel Spill Site at Ibeno, Nigeria

    Polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon (PAH)–degrading bacteria were isolated from aviation fuel contaminated soil at Inua Eyet Ikot in Ibeno, Nigeria. PAH-degrading bacteria in the contaminated soil were isolated by enrichment culture technique. Isolates with high PAH degrading potential characterized by their extensive growth on PAH-supplemented minimal salt medium were screened for their naphthalene, phenanthrene and chrysene degradability. The screening medium which contained selected PAHs as the sole source of carbon and energy showed that Micrococcus varians AFS-2, Pseudomonas putida AFS-3 and Alcaligenes faecalis AFS-5 exhibited a concentration–dependent growth in all the PAH–compounds tested. There were visible changes in the color of growth medium suggesting the production of different metabolites. Their acclimation to different PAH substrates was also evident as A. faecalis AFS-5 isolated from chrysene grew well on other less complex aromatic compounds. The isolate exhibited best growth (0.44 OD600) when exposed to 10 ppm of chrysene for 5 days and could utilize up to 90 ppm of chrysene. This isolate and others with strong PAH-degrading potentials are recommended for bioremediation of PAHs in aviation fuel-contaminated sites in the tropics

    Long-term correction of diabetes in rats after lentiviral hepatic insulin gene therapy

    Aims/hypothesis: Type 1 diabetes results from the autoimmune destruction of pancreatic beta cells. Exogenous insulin therapy cannot achieve precise physiological control of blood glucose concentrations, and debilitating complications develop. Lentiviral vectors are promising tools for liver-directed gene therapy. However, to date, transduction rates in vivo remain low in hepatocytes, without the induction of cell cycling. We investigated long-term transgene expression in quiescent hepatocytes in vitro and determined whether the lentiviral delivery of furin-cleavable insulin to the liver could reverse diabetes in rats. Materials and methods: To improve transduction efficiency in vitro, we optimised hepatocyte isolation and maintenance protocols and, using an improved surgical delivery method, delivered furin-cleavable insulin alone or empty vector to the livers of streptozotocin-induced diabetic rats by means of a lentiviral vector. Rats were monitored for changes in body weight and blood glucose, and intravenous glucose tolerance tests were performed. Expression of insulin was determined by RT-PCR, immunohistochemistry and electron microscopy. Results: We achieved long-term transgene expression in quiescent hepatocytes in vitro (87 ± 1.2% transduction efficiency), with up to 60 ± 3.2% transduction in vivo. We normalised blood glucose for 500 days-a significantly longer period than previously reported-making this the first successful study using a lentiviral vector. This procedure resulted in the expression of genes encoding several beta cell transcription factors, some pancreatic endocrine transdifferentiation, hepatic insulin storage in granules, and restoration of glucose tolerance. Liver function tests remained normal. Importantly, pancreatic exocrine transdifferentiation did not occur. Conclusions/interpretation: Our data suggest that this regimen may ultimately be employed for the treatment of type 1 diabetes

    Investigating the effect of artists’ paint formulation on degradation rates of TiO2-based oil paints

    This study reports on the effect of artists’ paint formulation on degradation rates of TiO2-based oil paints. Titanium white oil paint exists in a multitude of different recipes, and the effect of the formulation on photocatalytic binder degradation kinetics is unknown. These formulations contain, among others, one or both titanium dioxide polymorphs, zinc oxide, the extenders barium sulfate or calcium carbonate and various additives. Most research performed on the photocatalytic degradation process focusses on pure titanium white-binder mixtures and thus does not take into account the complete paint system. Since photocatalytic oil degradation is a process initiated by the absorption of UV light, any ingredient or combination of ingredients influencing the light scattering and absorption properties of the paint films may affect the degradation rate. In this study three sets of experiments are conducted, designed using the design of experiments (DoE) approach, to screen for the most important formulation factors influencing the degradation rate. The benefits of using DoE, compared to a more traditional ‘one factor at a time approach’ are robustness, sample efficiency, the ability of evaluate mixtures of multiple components as well as the ability to evaluate factor interactions. The three sets of experiments investigate (1) the influence of the TiO2 type, (2) the impact of different mixtures of two types of TiO2, ZnO and the additive aluminum stearate and (3) the influence of common extenders in combination with photocatalytic TiO2, on the photocatalytic degradation of the oil binder. The impact of the formulation on the degradation rate became apparent, indicating the shortcoming of oversimplified studies. The protective effect of photostable TiO2 pigments, even in a mixture with photocatalytic TiO2 pigments, as well as the negative effect of extenders was demonstrated. Furthermore, the ambiguous role of ZnO (photocatalytic or not) and aluminum stearate is highlighted. Neither can be ignored in a study of degradation behavior of modern oil paints and require further investigation
