    Exploring Key Group Counseling Processes: Implications for Group Counselor Training

    We studied several processes in a standardized counselor training group. Participants were masters-level counselor trainees (n=100) who took part in eight sessions in an experiential group. Our purpose was to examine the patterns of therapeutic processes and the therapeutic factors that predicted cohesiveness and commitment of the group tasks. Results underscore the interlocking nature of the therapeutic process factors of cohesiveness, altruism, and universality. Analyses reveal the central role of cohesiveness as a process factor in a short-term group. Altruism and engagement consistently predicted cohesiveness. Cohesiveness predicted commitment to the group tasks. The processes in these training groups resemble those of actual counseling groups. Suggestions for structuring training groups, implications for counselor education, and future research recommendations are discussed

    The airways' mechanical stress in lung disease: Implications for COPD pathophysiology and treatment evaluation

    The airway epithelium stretches and relaxes during the normal respiratory cycle, and hyperventilation exaggerates this effect, resulting in changes in lung physiology. In fact, stretching of the airways influences lung function and the secretion of airway mediators, which in turn may cause a potentially injurious inflammatory response. This aim of the present narrative review was to illustrate the current evidence on the importance of mechanical stress in the pathophysiology of lung diseases with a particular focus on chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) and to discuss how this may influence pharmacological treatment strategies. Overall, treatment selection should be tailored to counterpart the effects of mechanical stress, which influences inflammation both in asthma and COPD. The most suitable treatment approach between a long-acting \u3b22-agonists/long-acting antimuscarinic-agonist (LABA/LAMA) alone or with the addition of inhaled corticosteroids should be determined based on the underlying mechanism of inflammation. Noteworthy, the anti-inflammatory effects of the glycopyrronium/indacaterol combination on hyperinflation and mucociliary clearance may decrease the rate of COPD exacerbations, and it may synergistically improve bronchodilation with a double action on both the cyclic adenosine monophosphate (cAMP) and the acetylcholine pathways

    Top-down cascading effects driven by the odontocetes in the Gulf of Taranto (Northern Ionian Sea, Central Mediterranean Sea)

    An investigation of the marine food web in the Gulf of Taranto (Northern Ionian Sea, Central Mediterranean Sea) was carried out to explore the top-down cascading effects driven by the Odontocetes. The food web was analysed by a mass-balance model using 51 functional groups and detailing the trophic impacts of the striped and common bottlenose dolphins, the Risso's dolphin and the sperm whale during the period 2010-2014. Odontocetes resulted top-predators with the highest TL estimated for the Risso's dolphin (TL=5.40) and the lowest for the common bottlenose dolphin (TL=4.47). The striped dolphin played the highest top-down control, showing cascading effects up to the 3rd TL. The Risso's dolphin and the sperm whale played similar cascading effects, but weaker than the striped dolphin. Understanding pattern and strengthen of trophic controls played by the Odontocetes within the food web could contribute to identify the basal mechanisms involved in the ecosystem functioning
