Causes of sprawl: A portrait from space
We study the extent to which US urban development is sprawling and consider what determines differences in sprawl across space. Using remote-sensing data to track the evolution of land use on a grid of 8.7 billion 30x30 metre cells, we measure sprawl as the amount of undeveloped land surrounding an average urban dwelling. On this measure, while the extent of sprawl remained roughly unchanged between 1976 and 1992, it varied dramatically across metropolitan areas. Ground water availability, temperate climate, rugged terrain, decentralized employment, early public transport infrastructure, uncertainty about metropolitan growth, and unincorporated land in the urban fringe all increase sprawl.urban sprawl; land development; remote sensing
Fat City: The Relationship Between Urban Sprawl and Obesity
We study the relationship between urban sprawl and obesity. Using data that tracks individuals over time, we find no evidence that urban sprawl causes obesity. We show that previous findings of a positive relationship most likely reflect a failure to properly control for the fact the individuals who are more likely to be obese choose to live in more sprawling neighborhoods. Our results indicate that current interest in changing the built environment to counter the rise in obesity is misguided.urban sprawl; obesity; selection effects
Benefits of amplification for speech recognition in background noise
The purpose of the present study was to examine the benefits of providing audible speech to listeners with sensorineural hearing loss when the speech is presented in a background noise. Previous studies have shown that when listeners have a severe hearing loss in the higher frequencies, providing audible speech (in a quiet background) to these higher frequencies usually results in no improvement in speech recognition. In the present experiments, speech was presented in a background of multitalker babble to listeners with various severities of hearing loss. The signal was low-pass filtered at numerous cutoff frequencies and speech recognition was measured as additional high-frequency speech information was provided to the hearing-impaired listeners. It was found in all cases, regardless of hearing loss or frequency range, that providing audible speech resulted in an increase in recognition score. The change in recognition as the cutoff frequency was increased, along with the amount of audible speech information in each condition (articulation index), was used to calculate the "efficiency" of providing audible speech. Efficiencies were positive for all degrees of hearing loss. However, the gains in recognition were small, and the maximum score obtained by an listener was low, due to the noise background. Live-Cell Imaging of Single Receptor Composition Using Zero-Mode Waveguide Nanostructures
We exploit the optical and spatial features of subwavelength nanostructures to examine individual receptors on the plasma membrane of living cells. Receptors were sequestered in portions of the membrane projected into zero-mode waveguides. Using single-step photobleaching of green fluorescent protein incorporated into individual subunits, the resulting spatial isolation was used to measure subunit stoichiometry in α4β4 and α4β2 nicotinic acetylcholine and P2X2 ATP receptors. We also show that nicotine and cytisine have differential effects on α4β2 stoichiometry
Spectral peak resolution and speech recognition in quiet: Normal hearing, hearing impaired and cochlear implant listeners
Spectral peak resolution was investigated in normal hearing (NH), hearing impaired (HI), and cochlear implant (CI) listeners. The task involved discriminating between two rippled noise stimuli in which the frequency positions of the log-spaced peaks and valleys were interchanged. The ripple spacing was varied adaptively from 0.13 to 11.31 ripples/octave, and the minimum ripple spacing at which a reversal in peak and trough positions could be detected was determined as the spectral peak resolution threshold for each listener. Spectral peak resolution was best, on average, in NH listeners, poorest in CI listeners, and intermediate for HI listeners. There was a significant relationship between spectral peak resolution and both vowel and consonant recognition in quiet across the three listener groups. The results indicate that the degree of spectral peak resolution required for accurate vowel and consonant recognition in quiet backgrounds is around 4 ripples/octave, and that spectral peak resolution poorer than around 1–2 ripples/octave may result in highly degraded speech recognition. The Clinical Assessment and Remote Administration Tablet
Electronic data capture of case report forms, demographic, neuropsychiatric, or clinical assessments, can vary from scanning hand-written forms into databases to fully electronic systems. Web-based forms can be extremely useful for self-assessment; however, in the case of neuropsychiatric assessments, self-assessment is often not an option. The clinician often must be the person either summarizing or making their best judgment about the subject’s response in order to complete an assessment, and having the clinician turn away to type into a web browser may be disruptive to the flow of the interview. The Mind Research Network has developed a prototype for a software tool for the real-time acquisition and validation of clinical assessments in remote environments. We have developed the clinical assessment and remote administration tablet on a Microsoft Windows PC tablet system, which has been adapted to interact with various data models already in use in several large-scale databases of neuroimaging studies in clinical populations. The tablet has been used successfully to collect and administer clinical assessments in several large-scale studies, so that the correct clinical measures are integrated with the correct imaging and other data. It has proven to be incredibly valuable in confirming that data collection across multiple research groups is performed similarly, quickly, and with accountability for incomplete datasets. XO-2b: a hot Jupiter with a variable host star that potentially affects its measured transit depth
The transiting hot Jupiter XO-2b is an ideal target for multi-object
photometry and spectroscopy as it has a relatively bright (-mag = 11.25) K0V
host star (XO-2N) and a large planet-to-star contrast ratio
(R/R). It also has a nearby (31.21") binary stellar
companion (XO-2S) of nearly the same brightness (-mag = 11.20) and spectral
type (G9V), allowing for the characterization and removal of shared systematic
errors (e.g., airmass brightness variations). We have therefore conducted a
multiyear (2012--2015) study of XO-2b with the University of Arizona's 61"
(1.55~m) Kuiper Telescope and Mont4k CCD in the Bessel U and Harris B
photometric passbands to measure its Rayleigh scattering slope to place upper
limits on the pressure-dependent radius at, e.g., 10~bar. Such measurements are
needed to constrain its derived molecular abundances from primary transit
observations. We have also been monitoring XO-2N since the 2013--2014 winter
season with Tennessee State University's Celestron-14 (0.36~m) automated
imaging telescope to investigate stellar variability, which could affect
XO-2b's transit depth. Our observations indicate that XO-2N is variable,
potentially due to {cool star} spots, {with a peak-to-peak amplitude of ~R-mag and a period of ~days for the 2013--2014
observing season and a peak-to-peak amplitude of ~R-mag and
~day period for the 2014--2015 observing season. Because of}
the likely influence of XO-2N's variability on the derivation of XO-2b's
transit depth, we cannot bin multiple nights of data to decrease our
uncertainties, preventing us from constraining its gas abundances. This study
demonstrates that long-term monitoring programs of exoplanet host stars are
